Chapter 79: Sunday Afterlight and Karaoke Madness
Sunday morning came with a softness the city rarely had.
Warm light spilled through the blinds, brushing across Renji's bare chest as he lay sprawled on the couch, half-awake, half-lost in the glow of yesterday.
For once, there wasn't a rush, no alarms, no noise, no chaos. Just stillness.
And the faintest smile on his lips.
"Man…" he murmured, rubbing his eyes. "That actually felt… good."
A familiar ding broke the quiet.
[Quest Complete: Rekindle the Light]
Objective Achieved: Saki Hoshino reconnected emotionally with life.

New Passive Unlocked — Empathic Pulse: Your presence accelerates emotional healing in bonded partners.
Renji chuckled, stretching lazily. "So I'm basically therapy with abs now."
[Not inaccurate.]
He grinned. "You're getting sassier by the day, you know that?"
[You're getting softer.]
Renji exhaled, staring at the ceiling. "Yeah… maybe I am."
Images flickered through his mind, saki's shy smile under the fading sunset, her laughter over coffee, the way her lips trembled when she said thank you.
No lust. No frenzy. Just warmth. Something rare.
"Guess she really did come back," he said quietly. "Not just to the world… but to herself."
He sat up, running a hand through his hair, when a knock came at the door. Three gentle taps, rhythmic and familiar.
Renji smirked. "That's either trouble… or breakfast."
He stood, tugged on a T-shirt, and opened the door and there she was.
Reina Hakari, in a soft cream sweater and jeans, a takeout bag in one hand and that serene, motherly smile in the other. Her hair was tied up loosely, sunlight glinting on her earrings.
"Morning, Renji," she greeted, voice smooth as honey. "I brought breakfast. You looked like you'd forget to eat."
Renji leaned on the doorframe, teasing.
"You spying on me again, nurse?"
She raised a brow, amused. "When my favorite student disappears for an entire Saturday and comes back smiling like that, I start to wonder."
He stepped aside, gesturing her in. "Then come in and interrogate me properly."
She walked past him, her perfume faint but familiar, calm, comforting, dangerously intimate. Setting the food down on the table, she looked around his apartment with that gentle curiosity she always carried.
"You look relaxed," she said, glancing over her shoulder. "That's new."
Renji smirked, settling onto the couch. "Maybe I just had a good day."
Reina turned, eyes narrowing playfully. "A Saki Hoshino kind of day?"
He blinked. "You really are spying on me."
She laughed softly, sitting across from him. "Rika told me. Said you looked happy when you picked her call yesterday."
He scratched the back of his neck. "Guess I did."
Her expression softened, warmth flickering behind her teasing tone. "She needed that, you know. More than you realize."
Renji nodded slowly. "Yeah. She did."
For a moment, silence settled between them peaceful, charged only by the morning light filtering across the table.
Reina opened the bag, sliding a breakfast sandwich toward him. "Eat, soldier. You'll need your strength if you keep melting women's hearts like this."
He grinned. "And you're still the one feeding me. Coincidence?"
She met his gaze with a knowing smirk. "Maybe I just like keeping you alive long enough to cause more chaos."
He laughed quietly, shaking his head. But as he bit into the sandwich, his eyes softened again, because beneath the teasing, beneath the warmth, he felt it: that same gentle pulse from last night.
Saki's laughter. Reina's quiet care.
Rika's unwavering presence.
Pieces of something bigger, something real.
And for the first time in a long while, Renji didn't feel like a man chasing lust or redemption.
He just felt… whole.
---
The quiet stretched between them as morning drifted into late light. The air smelled of coffee and toasted bread. Reina sat cross-legged on the couch now, her sweater slipping slightly from her shoulder as she leaned forward, studying him with those calm, amber eyes.
"You've changed," she said simply.
Renji blinked. "That so?"
She nodded, expression thoughtful. "When you first came here, you carried yourself like someone waiting for a fight. Now…" She tilted her head slightly. "You sit like someone who's already won one."
Renji chuckled, rubbing his jaw. "Maybe I just got tired of losing."
"Hmm." She smiled faintly. "Or maybe someone reminded you what it feels like to be seen."
That hit harder than she probably meant it to. Renji looked down, fingers tightening around his cup. "Saki," he murmured.
Reina nodded softly. "She looked lost for so long, Renji. You did something no one else could."
He gave a small shrug, pretending not to feel the weight in her words. "Guess I'm good at finding people."
Her eyes lingered on him, gentle but sharp enough to see through his deflection. "And who finds you?"
He looked up. For a heartbeat, their eyes locked, two people who understood more than they said. There was no heat, no pretense. Just quiet recognition.
Renji let out a breath. "Maybe I'm still figuring that part out."
She smiled, that tender, almost maternal curve of her lips that always made something twist inside him. "You don't have to figure it out alone."
Before he could answer, his phone buzzed on the table.
Rika Shoku.
Reina's gaze flicked toward the screen and then back to him, a hint of knowing in her smile. "Duty calls?"
Renji stood, slipping his hands into his pockets. "Something like that."
Reina rose too, brushing imaginary crumbs from her jeans. "Tell her I said hi. And Renji?"
He turned as he reached the door.
"Don't lose that softness you've found," she said quietly. "It suits you."
He gave her a small grin. "Didn't think softness was my color."
"It is," she replied, stepping past him with that calm grace of hers. "You just never wore it right before."
She left him standing there, the faint scent of her perfume lingering in the doorway.
And then, the System's voice hummed inside his head, soft, almost amused.
[Observation: Emotional resonance with Reina Hakari increasing.]
[Warning: Emotional overlap with Saki Hoshino detected.]
[Sync stability — fluctuating.]
Renji exhaled. "Yeah," he muttered. "Figured that might happen."
[You're connecting faster than before. Be careful what strings you pull next.]
He smirked. "When have I ever been careful?"
[Exactly my concern.]
The voice faded, leaving only the ticking clock and the quiet pulse in his chest.
Renji grabbed his jacket, slung it over his shoulder, and stepped out into the sunlight.
Rika's name still glowed on the screen.
And as he walked, he realized, both women who knew his secret had begun to feel the same quiet pull.
Not lust. Not obsession.
Trust.
Something that could heal them all… or destroy everything if he misstepped.
---
Monday came with that usual mix of chaos and caffeine. The classroom buzzed like a festival market, chatter, laughter, desks scraping, Kai trying to balance a chalk on his nose while Aki pretended not to know him.
Renji leaned back in his seat, arms crossed, watching it all with a half-smile. The weekend had ended too fast, but at least the noise meant normalcy… or something close to it.
Kai turned around, grinning like an idiot.
"Bro! We're doing karaoke after school. Class rep said it's to 'celebrate midterm survival.' You in?"
Renji raised an eyebrow. "Since when do we celebrate not failing?"
"Since forever!" Kai shot back. "Besides, you owe me for saving your ass during math drills."
Aki sighed from beside him, calm as ever. "He didn't save you. He copied your work and called it 'spiritual guidance.'"
Kai gasped. "And it worked, didn't it?"
Renji laughed under his breath. "Fine. I'll come. But if it turns into a disaster, I'm blaming you."
"That's the spirit!" Kai whooped, slapping his desk loud enough to make half the class jump. "Renji Sakamoto, the karaoke god, makes his debut!"
A few girls nearby giggled.
"Renji sings?" one whispered.
"I heard he plays guitar too…" another added, eyes glinting.
Renji smirked slightly, turning his head toward them. "I do a lot of things."
The room erupted with teasing laughter.
Aki just shook his head. "You attract attention like a moth to fire."
"Maybe I am the fire," Renji said casually, twirling his pen. "Can't blame the moths for trying."
Kai fake-fainted dramatically. "Bro, even your one-liners are dangerous."
"Better than your dance moves," Aki murmured.
"Hey! My hips don't lie!"
"Your grades do," Aki countered dryly, earning laughter from everyone around.
Even Renji couldn't help but chuckle, moments like this reminded him why he liked these two.
Kai, the idiot sunshine; Aki, the deadpan rock. Together, they kept things… human.
By the end of class, plans were locked in.
Everyone was buzzing about which songs to sing, who'd bring snacks, and whether the teacher would find out.
Renji packed up his bag when Rika's voice rang from the front, warm but firm.
"Don't forget your assignments due tomorrow. And if I hear any stories about broken microphones or!...." Her gaze paused on Kai. "—people attempting interpretive dance again…"
Kai saluted dramatically. "No promises, ma'am!"
Laughter rippled through the class.
As they filed out, Aki adjusted his glasses.
"You think this karaoke idea's going to end peacefully?"
Renji grinned. "Peacefully? No. But it'll be fun."
Kai slung his arm around Renji's shoulder. "That's my guy! Let's make it a night to remember."
Renji smirked, glancing toward the window where sunlight streaked the desks.
A normal Monday. Friends. Laughter. A plan for after school.
After everything that had happened lately the emotions, the secrets, the weight, this felt… good.
Grounding. Real.
The bell rang, and freedom hit like caffeine.
100% Caffeine
Half the class was already spilling out into the hallway, chattering about playlists, snacks, and who was definitely not allowed near the mic this time.
Kai was, of course, at the center of it all. "I'm calling first song! No arguments! I've been practicing my dance routine since Saturday!"
Aki sighed. "You 'practiced' in front of a mirror for two minutes before you tripped on your charger cable."
Renji smirked, sliding his hands into his pockets. "Sounds like progress."
"Exactly!" Kai shot finger guns at him. "Renji gets it!"
They made their way down the street together, a group of ten classmates total, energy loud enough to turn heads. The karaoke building sat just off the main road, glowing neon against the early evening sky.
Inside, the air smelled like cheap perfume, popcorn, and teenage chaos. Colored lights spun lazily over the small private booth they rented.
"Alright!" Kai yelled, jumping onto the couch.
"Operation: Eardrum Assault is a go!"
Renji leaned against the wall, amused, as Aki quietly set down his bag and took the farthest seat from the speakers. "I should've brought noise-canceling headphones."
The music queue blinked on-screen. Kai scrolled through songs like a DJ on caffeine. "Ooooh! We got love songs, breakup songs, anime openings!"
"Do not pick an anime song," Aki warned.
Kai picked one anyway.
The opening notes of a dramatic shonen theme exploded from the speakers.
"BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!" Kai screamed into the mic, voice cracking halfway through the verse.
The entire room howled with laughter.
Renji shook his head, biting back a grin. "You sound like you're dying mid-transformation."
"Shut up!" Kai wheezed, still singing, doing ridiculous hand gestures like he was powering up.
Even Aki was smirking now, despite himself.
"He's at least… enthusiastic."
When the song finally ended (mercifully), Kai collapsed onto the couch, sweating like he'd run a marathon.
"Your turn, Renji!" someone called from the group.
"Yeah! Mr. Cool Guy, let's hear what you got!"
Renji smirked, standing up slowly. "You sure you want that? I might ruin karaoke for everyone else."
Kai gasped dramatically. "Confidence! I love it!"
Aki adjusted his glasses. "If you embarrass us, I'm walking home alone."
Renji ignored him and picked a mellow rock track, something smooth but deep. The kind of song that didn't need volume to hit.
As the beat started, his voice cut through the chatter, low, calm, controlled. The room went quiet.
Even Kai froze halfway through sipping his soda.
Renji didn't try too hard, just sang, steady and unhurried. But there was weight in every note, warmth in every pause. By the time the chorus hit, even the girls who'd been whispering at the back were watching him, smiling softly.
When the last line faded, silence hung for a second before Kai exploded.
"BROOOOOOO! WHAT WAS THAT!? ARE YOU SECRETLY IN A BAND!?"
Renji grinned, sitting back down. "Nah. Just… used to sing a bit."
Aki raised an eyebrow. "Define 'a bit.'"
Kai was practically vibrating. "You can't just sing like that and pretend it's normal!"
The rest of the group laughed, cheering Renji on, demanding another round. Even the shy ones joined in, tossing song suggestions and drinks around.
For the first time in a long while, Renji wasn't thinking about systems or missions, just laughter, music, and friends.
Aki eventually got forced into a duet, Kai danced horribly in the background, and someone accidentally spilled soda on the floor.
It was messy. Loud. Imperfect.
And perfect in its own way.
