Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 89 – Counting Down

Two weeks after the dungeon clear, Damion received his cut from the auctioning of the Heavenly Wind Fruit. Damion could not decide what he wanted to do with the funds, so he simply left them in his payment card, confident that one day he would spend it on new equipment.

Leland was able to create Damion's requested artifact that could repair his clothing, though it did have a few draw backs. The necklace of mend, as Leland called it, was able to restore damaged clothing with the series of glyphs on it, but it had to know how things were originally first. This meant that once equipped, Damion had to activate the artifact so it could map his clothing and then once his clothing was damaged he would activate it again and the necklace of mend would restore the clothing to its previous condition.

Each time the necklace was activated it required a large amount of mana, almost all the mana Damion had. Damion was not sure why the necklace took so much mana, but Leland explained the glyphs were complex and that the more complex the magic, the higher the cost. In fact, because the glyphs were so complex on the necklace, even though the effect of the artifact was simple, it was actually a B Rank artifact. Damion's first B Rank artifact and it wasn't even armor or a weapon.

Since Damion had ample money for the time being, though he believed his funds would evaporate as soon as he started pricing more B Rank artifacts, he did not take on missions from the Adventurer Association. Instead, Damion focused on helping out around the house. His mother was quickly approaching her due date and Damion wanted to be a good son and a good older brother to the baby.

With it confirmed that he was unable to increase the level of the Magic System, or unlock it, until he turned 18, Damion decided to focus on training and growing stronger than on completing missions. He was quickly running out of quests from the system and the next level higher, to defeat C Rank Ferocious and Demonic Beasts, was beyond his reach.

First, he needed to reach D Rank, which while close, was still far enough away that he was not sure how long it would take him. Ms. Teft however, felt it necessary to inform him that Arica and Theodore had both reached D Rank shortly after their last dungeon run, which meant Damion was starting to get left behind.

Having faced a C Rank Demonic Beast before, Damion knew he would need to pretty much reach C rank to have a chance to fight one. To reach C Rank in magic power, he needed to accumulate 5,000 raw magic power, which was not an easy feat.

As the months began to flow by, Damion was able to reach D Rank in magic power just a few days before his mother gave birth, giving Damion a little sister. Bethany was a bundle of joy to the Wells family and despite Damion's desire to push ahead with his training, he found himself immersed in the joy of having a little sister for the first time in two lifetimes.

Another situation arose that prevented Damion from continuing his training, the bracelets Ms. Teft had given him were no longer effective. After reaching D Rank, the bracelets could no longer forcefully move his mana, which meant Damion had to work twice as hard at moving his mana and compressing it in his core than before to get half the result.

Even if he was not spending most of his days helping his mother with his baby sister, his progress would have slowed down considerably. As it was, Damion's progress came to a grinding halt. While Ms. Teft was somewhat displeased, she also was not too concerned.

Damion was already a D Rank, at 15 years old, before he had even awakened his magic affinity. Most mages graduated from one of the academies at 18 and were usually only E Rank. A few prodigies could achieve D Rank. This gave Damion a huge advantage, he might not reach C Rank without hard work before going to Silver Spire, but even going there as a D Rank would mark him as an elite student.

A few months after Bethany was born, Damion settled into a training routine, with the help of Ms. Teft, and started making slow progress. Most of his training was not to increase his magic power, but to hone his magic and his physical capabilities.

Now that Damion was the same Rank as most of his gear, he quickly realized how much of the potential of his gear he was missing because he was not strong enough to use it properly before. Damion was now able to unleash a fire pillar attack from his sword that lasted ten seconds. It was enough to roast even a hoard of top tier D Rank Demonic Beasts. But even with that increase in power, Damion was unable to do much to a C Rank Demonic Beast.

The magic power of a C Rank was such that until Damion could reach that level himself, he was not able to hurt a C Rank Demonic Beast. In the past Damion was able to fight Ferocious Beasts and Demonic Beasts above his level because his sword was a D Rank artifact, it helped to boost his power to that level, but his sword, as faithful as it was, could not jump up a Rank.

This reminded Damion about how artificers and high rank mages did not like producing high rank artifacts, as they might one day be used against them. Damion could not help but wonder if when he reached C Rank if everything below him in Rank would be unable to scratch him as well. Damion considered purchasing a new weapon, one at C Rank, that would allow him to be able to fight C Rank Demonic Beasts, but in the end he decided to wait to upgrade any of his gear until the Magic System unlocked.

Damion was worried that if he purchased something now, it would turn out to be useless to him once he had access to his magic affinity. Or worse, only partial suitable, but not the best compatibility, but also not useless. Which would leave a bad taste in his mouth as he contemplated trading gear he was used to in for something that suited him better but was not familiar to him.

As the days turned into months and the months into years, Damion was quickly left just counting down the days until the Magic System unlocked. His excitement was noticeable to his family in the weeks leading up to his birthday. Ms. Teft knew why he was excited, but his family just thought he was anxious for his eighteenth birthday, which seemed odd to them since he had never been excited for a birthday before.

When there were only a few days left, Damion decided to join in on a dungeon clearing run. Ms. Teft had been approached with a mission for Damion and encouraged him to join, so that he could make sure he had practical use of his skills and not just be training.

For this venture, Damion was heading into the second of Saung's C Rank dungeons, the desert, as it was called. Damion was not familiar with anyone in his new party. There was a C Rank Wind mage, Evander Hollis and a C Rank knight, Thomas Belcher.

The rest of the party were D Ranks like Damion. Two fire mages, Lucas and Tray Fontane and a light mage, Joseph Blythe. Damion was tasked with just protecting the group's healer, which was fine with him.
