Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 147 – Battle Simulator 2

"F Rank Ferocious Beast round complete. Now beginning E Rank Ferocious Beast round," a mechanical sounding voice resounded through the room.

Now Damion knew why these first Ferocious Beasts were so easy. They were only F Rank, he suspected that even if he had let them attack him he would not have suffered more than a slight bruise. The next round would consist of E Rank Ferocious Beasts. More challenging, but still not enough to worry him. Once he started facing D Rank creatures, he knew he would have to start being on guard.

The first E Rank Ferocious Beast that appeared looked like a snake. Damion recognized it from his Beastology book by the shape of the head and the light blue checkered pattern on its back. It was a Northern Sand Viper, quite venomous and could actually launch itself at foes by coiling itself up and springing forward. As Damion recalled, they could jump almost three meters for each meter long they were with this method.

Damion did not wait to find out if the snake was going spring forward at him from its current coiled position. A quick Ice Shard was all he needed to dispatch the first Northern Sand Viper. After it vanished in smoke a slightly larger one appeared.

Damion began to understand the pattern of the battle simulator now. First he would encounter a low-end beast of whatever Rank, then a mid-level one and then a peak beast of the Rank followed by facing several peak Rank beasts at once. The progression would allow the combatant to get used to the movements and abilities of whatever Ferocious Beast they were fighting before the real challenge of the three on one fight.

The format was nice, but Damion kind of wished it had started at D Rank. Having to fight through the F Rank and E Rank Ferocious Beasts was eating into his two hours of free battle simulator time.

Damion quickly finished off the Northern Sand Vipers, even dealing with the three peak E Rank Ferocious Beasts with a single Ice Breath cast when all three of the Ferocious Beasts leapt at him at once.

"E Rank Ferocious Beast round complete. Now beginning D Rank Ferocious Beast round," the battle simulator's mechanical voice rang through the room again.

The Ferocious Beast that appeared this time around was a Pine Bear. This Ferocious Beast had thick green hair that resembled the needles of a pine tree. Damion knew this Ferocious Beast had a Nature affinity. Not only could these Ferocious Beasts shoot their hair as small projectiles, they also had vinelike tongue that they could send out from their mouths to strangle prey up to three meters away.

As soon as the Ferocious Beast locked eyes with Damion it opened its mouth in a roar and started moving closer. Damion raised his palm towards the beast and cast Ice Shard. The ice crystal impacted the Pine Bear in its shoulder, but the Ferocious Beast was not slowed down by the attack.

Before Damion could cast Ice Shard again, the Pine Bear opened its mouth, and its long green tongue shot towards him. Not wanting to let the Ferocious Beast get ahold on him, Damion cast Ice Shield and blocked the Pine Bear's tongue. He then cast another Ice Shard with this one impacting the Pine Bear's open mouth.

The Pine Bear vanished in a cloud of smoke with its defeat and a few seconds later a new and slightly larger one appeared. This Pine Bear started moving towards Damion, but not in an all-out charge like the first one had. The slower movement allowed Damion to cast Ice Shard and took the Ferocious Beast out before it could even get close enough to use any of its abilities.

The third Pine Bear appeared and instead of charging at Damion, it turned, launching several of its needle-like hairs at Damion. The attack was easily intercepted by his Ice Shield, but the Ferocious Beast did not give up, instead it shifted to its other side and launched a full volley of its hair at Damion.

With the sheer number of projectiles heading Damion's way, he crouched down behind his Ice Shield and channeled more mana into it to increase its size and strength. The Pine Bear's hair needles began to hit the Ice Shield and bounce off. When Damion thought the attack was over he peeked around his shield to see the Pine Bear barreling towards him.

Damion had just enough time to dive out of the path of the Pine Bear, as even though he was stronger than a D Rank Ferocious Beast, the laws of inertia still said he would be knocked flying if he stayed in the path of a 300-kilogram bear.

As Damion rolled to his feet he was able to cast Ice Shard three times in quick succession catching the Pine Bear in the side with each ice crystal. The Ferocious Beast vanished into smoke indicating that Damion had done enough damage to it to warrant kill credit.

Damion barely had time to get to his feet as three Pine Bears were created by the battle simulator. Knowing these Ferocious Beasts could easily hurt him if they all charged at once Damion began casting Ice Shard while creating a new Ice Shield to protect himself from their needle hair missiles and vine tongues.

Damion was able to take down one of the three Ferocious Beasts, but the other two were moving too fast for him to land anything other than a glancing blow with his Ice Shards. Instead of diving out of the way when the Pine Bears approached, Damion leapt up and over them casting Ice Breath as he flew over the Ferocious Beasts.

The two Pine Bears were not in the field of effect of Ice Breath long enough for them to fall to the spell, but both had quite a bit of frost and ice on their back, and it looked to Damion that they could not launch their hair at him until that ice melted.

One of the remaining Pine Bears opened its mouth and its vine-like tongue shot out trying to grab hold of Damion. Instead of backing up out of reach of the Ferocious Beast's tongue, Damion stuck his arm out and let the beast wrap his forearm with it and let the Pine Bear try to pull him in.

With good footing and his own considerable physical strength, Damion was able to easily resist being pulled towards the Pine Bear. He took hold of the vinelike tongue and cast Icy Grasp. In just a few short seconds the Pine Bear's tongue was frozen solid, and Damion broke free of it, sending frozen segments of tongue to the ground while casting an Ice Shard at the stunned beast causing it to vanish into smoke.

The final Pine Bear charged at Damion in a rage over its last companion's defeat. However, since the Ferocious Beast was fairly close to him, it did not have the room to pick up speed. Raising his Ice Shield, he braced for the impact. The blow pushed Damion back a short distance, but he was able to stop the D Rank Ferocious Beast from trampling him. He then lowered his shield slightly and cast Ice Breath onto the Pine Bear.
