Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 126 – Not Good

When morning came, Damion climbed out of bed and joined Mr. Galen in the kitchen for breakfast. The old farmer was surprised to see him up and about without even appearing to favor his burns. After they ate Mr. Galen offered to change Damion's bandages and when the old farmer removed them and wiped the excess salve off of the young man's skin he was astounded by what he saw.

"How… this shouldn't be possible," Mr. Galen said as he looked at Damion's arms and back in confusion.

"I never skimp when it comes to healing products," Damion said trying to cover for his speedy recovery. No healing salve could do overnight what the Magic System's Health Potion had done. Healing potions might come close, but those were expensive and the only one he had ever used was a gift from Arica during the graveyard dungeon.

"Yer wounds weren't life threatening, but this…"

Mr. Galen was at a loss for words as his mind tried to work out how Damion had healed so fast, no healing salve could heal those burns in one night. Even if one could, there was no way it would be a complete recovery. There was no sign of the burns anymore, it was as if Damion was never hurt in the first place.

"Let's go work on your fence and finish clearing out the front fields," Damion told the old farmer as he got up and went out of the house.

Damion did not want Mr. Galen to focus too much on his recovery. It would be best if the old farmer just accepted it and moved on. The best way Damion could think to get the man to move on, was to keep him busy. If they were focused on rebuilding the stone wall the giant Fire Scorpion had damaged and clearing out the other Fire Scorpions the work should keep both their minds busy all day.

Keep them busy it did. Half the day had gone by before they finished rebuilding the wall between the front and back fields. After eating lunch Damion then focused on making sure the front fields were free of Fire Scorpions.

Damion went back to all the burrows he had cleared before and used Ice Breath to kill or flush out any Fire Scorpions hiding inside. There were a few Fire Scorpions found, but the front fields had mostly remained clear, likely due to the Fire Scorpions being too afraid to come out now that their big brother was dead.

The carcass of the giant Fire Scorpion was still laying in the back field. Phil had eaten his share and retreated to his nest in the Benault Forest. Damion knew they could not leave the carcass in the sun any longer than already had and not expect the smell to attract other Ferocious Beasts. The carcass was too large to easily bury, so Damion decided to try and burn it.

Damion was not sure how well the carcass would burn, given it belonged to a Fire affinity Ferocious Beast, but he felt there was a chance that it would since the creature was dead. After pulling the carcass to the far corner of the back field, he piled some dead wood on and around the giant Fire Scorpion. Damion also added the carcasses of the F Rank Fire Scorpions he had killed in the pile as well.

Once everything was in a big pile, Damion took out his sword and used his fire attack glyph to ignite the wood. The fire started slowly at first, but soon enough the carcasses of the small Fire Scorpions started exploding in little fireballs sending pieces of carapace and scorpion legs flying.

When the first one exploded, Damion was shocked and thought one of the Fire Scorpions was still alive. But after watching and seeing no movement Damion realized what happened. The liquid in the Fire Scorpion's body that they sprayed through their stingers to create their fire attacks was exploding.

Each Fire Scorpion took a different amount of time to go off because of where the fire was and how each Fire Scorpion was killed. However, after the first half dozen little explosions, Damion realized all the Fire Scorpions were going to end up exploding. For the F Rank Fire Scorpions this was not too bad. They only had a small amount of the liquid left, so the explosion was only enough to send their body parts flying. But when Damion's eyes fell on the giant Fire Scorpion's body, he realized he was in trouble.

Either the fire was not yet hot enough, or it had not reached wherever the reservoir for the combustible liquid was in the giant Fire Scorpion's body, but when it did Damion knew this was not going to be a small little fireball.

"Mr. Galen, I think I made a mistake, quickly go inside," Damion called out to Mr. Galen who had been laughing each time one of the Fire Scorpion's exploded.

"Wha?" Mr. Galen asked back trying to hear Damion over the ever-growing roar of the fire.

When Mr. Galen saw Damion run towards the bonfire and start using Ice Breath to try and put out the flames, especially the flames on the giant Fire Scorpion, he understood. If the giant Fire Scorpion went up like the small ones it was going to make a heck of a mess.

Damion continued to try and put out the fire, while Mr. Galen retrieved a water hose he used for gardening and started spraying the fire from the distance. Mr. Galen's hose was not long enough to allow him to get to closer and only a small amount of the water was landing on the fire, but Damion's Ice Breath was quite effective, and the fire was almost out.

When the last of the flames were finally put out Damion sighed in relief. The threat of explosion was over, now all he had to do was dig a big hole to bury the Fire Scorpion and collect all the little pieces of F Rank Fire Scorpions that had been blown all over the place and drop them in the hole before filling it in.

"Well, that was exciting," Mr. Galen said with a laugh. "I was having so much fun watch'n the little ones pop I didn't think it could happen to the big one."

"Yeah, that could have been bad," Damion said as he grabbed a shovel from the side of Mr. Galen's house to get started on the hole. "Sorry about the mess."

"Don't worry. Best show I've seen in years," Mr. Galen told him while still laughing.

They dug the hole for the carcasses right next to the giant Fire Scorpion. This would allow them to just roll the thing in and then shovel the rest of the small ones in too. It was getting close to night fall when the hole was finally large enough to handle the giant Fire Scorpion and Damion climbed out of the hole to roll it over.

As Damion pushed on the giant Fire Scorpion's carcass he was surprised to find the thing was still cold to the touch. While using his Ice Breath, Damion must have frozen the carcass nearly solid as he was putting the flames out and the giant Fire Scorpion had yet to thaw.

With one final push, the giant Fire Scorpion tumbled into the hole with a thud and what he distinctly thought was the sound of cracking. The possibility that the corpse was indeed still frozen and cracked on impact passed through Damion's mind briefly before he heard a hissing.

Damion leaned toward to hole to try and see what was making the hissing noise and was granted a front row seat to a ground shaking explosion.
