Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 125 – Potions

'Well, that is interesting,' Damion thought as he considered the Magic System's answer.

If only one of the lifesaving potions from the Magic System's Shop could be used per week, it meant it was best to use a potion only in dire need and to make sure to use the right one. If Damion took a low Rank potion and was not fully healed, he would have to wait to recover naturally or take another potion in a week.

Even with that limitation, Damion still thought it would be a waste if he used a higher-grade potion than he needed too. If a C Rank potion could bring him back from the brink of death, did that mean a D Rank potion could fully heal him if he was half dead?

This was the question Damion was pondering. He was not at the brink of death. He was not even half dead. But what was a quarter dead? An E Rank potion should have 25% of its effectiveness for him as a C Rank, but what did 25% equate too?

Damion figured he would just have to find out. If it did not fully heal him, he could just rest for the next week and practice his magic.

'System, purchase an E Rank Health Potion and a C Rank Health Potion.'

{Affirmative.}

{E Rank Potion purchased for 15 Credits.}

{C Rank Potion purchased for 150 Credits.}

The potions did not appear around Damion, and he began to wonder where the potions were. They were not automatically used. He knew that because he could still feel the painful burns on his lower back and arms, but Damion did not know where the potions he just purchased were. After a few moments of confusion, he realized where his newly purchased Health Potion might be.

'System, open inventory.'

Once Damion looked at the Magic System's Inventory, he saw the potions taking up two of his twenty slots. Pulling the E Rank Health Potion out of the Magic System's Inventory he unscrewed the cap and then drank the contents.

As soon as the Health Potion touched his tongue Damion felt it start taking effect. After a few moments the pain from his burns completely vanished followed by the pain in his left arm slowly diminishing before disappearing completely. He wanted to rip off his bandages and take a look, but he resisted. It was better to wait until morning and pretend the healing salve was responsible.

With his wounds taken care of, Damion turned his attention back to the Magic System's Shop. Having already asked a bunch of questions regarding Health Potions, he decided now was a good time to check what the Mana Potions did. Damion could guess, but he wanted to know for sure.

'System, do the Mana Potions fully restore the mana of an individual of the same Rank as the potion?'

{Affirmative.}

'Do Mana Potions also lose 50% effectiveness for each Rank an individual is over the potion Rank?'

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

{Affirmative.}

Damion had little use for Mana Potions. With his mana regeneration being so high combined with Mana Absorption, he could easily replenish his mana. Satisfied that Mana Potions worked as he expected them to, he moved on to other items available in the store.

Damion looked at the options for artifacts. Opening the dropdown menu for Equipment Artifact, he saw prices for them ranged from 5 credits for an F Rank artifact and 10,000 credits for an S Rank. But the prices for E Rank, D Rank and C Rank were different at 10, 20 and 100 credits respectfully.

Accessory and Utility Artifacts were cheaper, starting with C Rank at only 50 credits and an S Rank artifact costing 5,000 credits. Damion quickly opened the dropdown for Weapon Artifacts and saw their prices were considerably higher than the others. F Rank Weapon Artifacts started at 10 credits with S Rank being at 30,000 credits. If he wanted a C Rank Weapon Artifact it would cost him 300 credits, which would almost use up all the credits he had left.

Damion decided to stop looking at the [Items] menu and switched back to [Upgrades]. He had 337 credits left, which could buy him a variety of upgrades or just a few. As he continued to weigh each option and each purchase, the value of his credits started to weigh heavily on him. Damion was confident he would be able to earn more fairly soon by working on mastering his spells, but he still needed to save an enormous number of credits if he wanted to ever be able to afford the higher priced upgrades and items.

'System, purchase Increase Magic Power.'

{Affirmative.}

{Increase Magic Power purchased for 15 Credits.}

{Magic Power has increased by 50.}

'System, purchase Increase Mana Capacity.'

{Affirmative.}

{Increase Mana Capacity purchased for 15 Credits.}

{Mana Capacity has increased by 50.}

After spending 30 credits Damion increased his magic power and mana capacity each by 50 points. This brought those upgrades to the same level as his mana regeneration upgrades. Each of the next upgrades for these three would cost him 22 credits. He considered purchasing the next level of upgrades but decided against it for now.

Keeping enough credits in reserve to purchase something in an emergency seemed like a good idea to Damion. Afterall, if he had not just completed a quest he would not have been able to afford even the cheapest of the Health Potions. Even with a C Rank Health Potion in his inventory he did not want to spend all his credits, just in case.

A few hours later, Mr. Galen brought in a bowl of soup for Damion to eat. Once he smelled the soup, his stomach grumbled. Evidently, he had forgotten he was hungry, and Damion eagerly started working on the meal.

"You are looking quite a bit better," Mr. Galen commented as Damion ate. "I guess ya spent quite a bit of money to afford such a good healing salve."

"I built up my kit over several years," Damion said truthfully. "Made it easier to afford the good things."

"It's a never-ending cycle for adventurers. Buying new to replace the old as ya grow," Mr. Galen reminisced.

"I just reached C Rank and have a lot of items I need to upgrade or replace," Damion told him. "My armor for instance, was only D Rank and is now rather damaged after just a single fight with a C Rank beast."

"I must say, I do appreciate ya taking care of tha giant Fire Scorpion. If ya weren't here, or if other adventurers had encountered it... I shudder to think wha woulda happened."

"It was no problem. I'll help you finish off enclosing the back fields so the Fire Scorpions there won't spread to the front again. I'm sure some have already started to move, unless Phil wanted another snack."

"I appreciate the help, but shouldn't ya let your wounds heal for a few days? Ya may be looking better, but those were still serious burns, and ya need to rest so ya can heal properly."

"We'll see how I feel in the morning," Damion said handing the empty bowl back to Mr. Galen.

Mr. Galen left the room while Damion closed his eyes and focused on studying the various magic seals stored by the Magic System. He could not easily practice magic in Mr. Galen's house, but he could still work on learning more about the magic seals.
