Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 102 – Checking The Store

"Someone else want to drive?" Damion asked his group. Their healer was sitting next to him and could easily take over, but Damion was not sure if the young man would want to. "I'm exhausted."

"Sure," the healer said taking over the controls.

Free of the need to pay attention to the ruined fields they were driving through on their way back to Saung, Damion closed his eyes. The Magic System was now fully unlocked and he wanted to explore the information behind those previously locked menus.

Damion closed his eyes and brought up the Magic System. Before he could even start exploring the new features the Magic System sent him a notification.

*Ding*

{Magic System has enough experience to upgrade to level 2. Would you like to upgrade now?}

[Yes] [No]

Damion looked at the options in front of him, not sure if he should let the Magic System level up right now or not. He supposed the real question was, what did the level up entail.

'System, what will happen if I tell you to level up now?'

{Once level up is selected, the Magic System will shut down. Throughout the update process host will be without access to the Magic System until the level up finishes.}

'How long will the level up take?'

{The upgrade process will take twelve hours.}

'Is the system able to be upgraded while I sleep?'

{Affirmative.}

'Begin the process once I go to sleep,' Damion told the Magic System. It was best if he never noticed the absence of the system and going to sleep and then waking up with new features to play with sounded good to him.

What Damion wanted to see right now what was in the Shop that he had been wanting to unlock for eighteen years. Damion had 96 Store Credits from finishing various quests over the years. He just hopped that these 96 Credits would be enough for something good.

[Magic System Store]

[Awaken a new Magic Affinity - 50 Credits]

[Increase Magic Power - 10 Credits]

[Increase Magic Regeneration - 10 Credits]

[Increase Mana Capacity - 10 Credits]

[Increase Magic Affinity - 1,000 Credits]

[Random Attribute Potion - 50 Credits]

[Strength Potion - 100 Credits]

[Dexterity Potion - 100 Credits]

[Vitality Potion - 100 Credits]

[Intelligence Potion - 100 Credits]

When Damion saw the available items he was both excited and let down. 96 Credits could get him a variety of things, but what each item did was not entirely clear. Damion did not want to purchase anything right now.

For one thing he was not sure how the purchase happened and if something just appeared in his lap the other people in the ground car were going to question it. But he also wanted to see if new items became available after the Magic System upgraded to level 2.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

A few things on the list caught Damion's eye. Increasing his magic regeneration, capacity and magic power seemed self-explanatory and could be very useful if he needed a boost to breakthrough to the next Rank.

Increase magic affinity seemed a tad expensive, but Damion guessed that to push an affinity up a Rank was not an easy thing to do. He remembered well how much the Heavenly Wind Enhancing Fruit had cost. This seemed to do the same thing and possibly more, since the Heavenly Fruits could only push a person up to A Rank.

The item Damion most wanted to buy was to awaken a new magic affinity. People with multiple affinities were as rare as A Rank mages. The downside of having more than one affinity was naturally the number of spells a person was limited to learning. As much as Damion would like to awaken a second or even a third affinity, he had to consider how useful would it really be? Besides, until he started mastering his Ice affinity, he figured it would be a good idea not to throw something else into the mix.

'How much of an increase do the potions give to an attribute?' Damion asked the Magic System mentally.

{Each attribute potion will increase the respective attribute by 1 point.}

One point did not seem like very much to Damion, but then if he reached a plateau in his training, being able to take one of these potions to increase his strength or even increase his intelligence could be worthwhile.

'Is there a limit to how many can be taken?'

{There is no limit to the number of purchases or uses.}

'So, if I had 10,000 points I could buy 100 Strength Potions and almost double my strength?'

{Negative. The price of each item increases after each purchase.}

'How much does the price increase?'

{The price increases by 50 percent of the current price with each purchase.}

When Damion heard that he had to stop himself from choking. Everyone in the ground car looked at him funny, but when Damion did not open his eyes, they just decided he had swallowed a bug or something and went back to ignoring him.

A 50 percent increase in price after each purchase would quickly make most of the items on this list out of reach for a long time. Unless of course he had new quests to accomplish.

Damion quickly switched over to the quest menu to see if he had received anything new and was surprised to see a few new additions.

[Quest: Learn a new language]

[Description: Magic is more than just an idea, it is a written and spoken language. It is time to learn the Nashto language and explore the forgotten depths of magic.]

[Reward: 100 Experience, 1 Store Credit]

[Quest: Kill C Rank Ferocious Beasts or Demonic Beasts]

[Reward: 100 Experience, 5 Store Credit]

[Quest: Learn a Tier 2 Magic Spell]

[Reward: 100 Experience, 500 Store Credit]

[Quest: Increase a Magic Spell in Rank]

[Description: The greater your power, the more you can accomplish. Increase the mastery of your magic and be reward with each increase.]

[Reward: 100 Experience, 500 Store Credit]

When Damion looked over the last quest he felt a bit annoyed. He had already increased Mana Absorption from F to D Rank. Now he had a quest to do just that but had not gotten any reward.

'System, why was there no reward for increase the Rank of Mana Absorption?'

{The quest Increase a Magic Spell in Rank can only be completed as a mage. Actions done prior to the qualifications of the quest do not carry over.}

'That sucks,' Damion thought.

Damion was about to go back and look over the items in the Magic System's Shop when he felt the ground car begin to slow. Opening his eyes, he saw they were approaching the city gate. Once they were inside the city, Damion's team for the afternoon climbed out and headed to their own homes and Damion drove Ms. Teft's ground car towards his.

As Damion drove through the streets of Saung, he saw quite a bit of damage. Cleanup had already begun, but the amount of damage in some areas sent a chill down his spine. An S Rank Demonic Beast was no joke.

Damion found the neighborhood where his family home was mostly untouched. This lightened Damion's mood a bit, glad that his home had not been destroyed. Damion parked Ms. Teft's car next to his parents' and headed inside. He was surprised to find they were not home yet, but he figured with the damage to the neighboring areas, they may have volunteered to help clean up effort or even still be held in the shelter until mages could repair the worst damaged sections of the city.

The house was a bit of a mess, evidence of his family's quick exit in the morning. On the floor near the door was Bethany's stuffed bunny. She must have dropped on the rush out the door. Damion could only smile at the thought of his little sister pestering his parents constantly for them to go back and get her bunny.

Since the cleanup effort was still going on, Damion did not think too much about his parents not being home and headed to his room and stripped his armor and gear off. Once that was done Damion collapsed on his bed and was quickly greeted with a notification from the Magic System as he fell asleep.
