Chapter 1044: Union of Greek Socialist Republics (UGSR) (4)
"How is that possible, Baltimore? How can I give up the land I acquired and so-called nationalise my property? "
" You were the one who always told me to uphold the family honour even through the toughest time under the Ottomans, but why are you asking for such a thing now? "
A noble whose face had become bright like a ripe peach asked with a livid and unsightly expression.
Standing in front of him was an old man. Looking at the way he was meticulously dressed, he could be considered an exquisite and elegant old man, but now, with the dishevelled hair, red eyes, and skin that looked like it had aged several years all of a sudden, he simply looked like a peasant in expensive clothes.
" We are left with no other choice, master." Tears were glistening in his eyes. " If we don't accept the demands of this so-called Republic, there will not be a demand for it anymore. They will directly snatch it from you, and at that time ,even saving the master's life is doubtful. " He felt a pang of heartache. " So many years of legacy will be destroyed, but at least the master can be alive and live to see another day. Who knows, maybe in the future you will get a chance to rise again. "
" Baltimore..." The noble's expression immediately softened, and he felt pain deep within his bones.
" Don't hesitate, master, quickly go ahead & sign the agreement. I feel like those people are too impatient. Maybe if they feel like we are wasting their time, they might attack us right away. "
Left with no other choice, the noble, although unwilling, walked into the guest room with steps that felt heavy, as if his boots were filled with lead.
In the end, he signed the nationalisation of private property agreement, losing everything he had acquired after the Ottoman Empire fell.
" Thank you for your cooperation, comrade. We will take our leave now. "
He did not stand up to send the guests out, but the guests did not care either; the task had been completed, and nothing else mattered.
In a similar fashion, land was being reacquired by the Republic at an incredible pace. Naturally, there was resistance; the nobles, being on top of the power pyramid for thousands of years, were not so easy to take down, but with the covert support of the Bharatiya Empire and the raw might of the people being expressed through a single organisation, the resistance put forward by the nobles was like a chicken running headfirst into KFC.
While all the land was being centralised, the organisational framework of the Republic was beginning to take shape at a ground level. A local authority called the People's Council began to be established in all the major towns and cities across the stretch of Greece and Turkey.
" Everyone, listen up. The people from the top have spoken. From now on, all adult citizens across the Republic can choose their own representative to the People's Council. "
A cadre, who had just joined the Communist Party of Greece, relayed the message he got from his superiors and pointed towards the town hall that had a wall missing.
" The previous town hall will be transformed into the People's Council, and it will be the primary place of power for our area. "
" The elections to pick the representative will begin in a few weeks, so anyone interested in becoming a representative should quickly sign up to the Communist Party of Greece, and you can start campaigning to win the favour of the people. "
Such a thing did not happen in only one remote town, but in all towns, cities, and larger regions across the union. For the most part the formation of the People's Councils was smooth because the Greeks were not unfamiliar with the concept of democracy, but it caused a huge sensation in the regions of Turkey, and there was huge dissatisfaction among the people because all the people of the Republic were Greek in origin, and also a rule was imposed on them, only Greek-speaking people could stand for the election.
Riots broke out, but with the Bharatiya Empire acting from behind the scenes by infiltrating the Republic, the rebellion was quickly crushed until there was no more resistance.
In the end, the People's Councils were established across the union, and elections began to commence a few weeks after.
After the election, the representatives gathered in their individual Republic capitals and started to elect delegates to the Assembly of their representative constituent Republic.
This took a few more weeks, where the top delegates were selected to handle different aspects of governance within the Republic, and among the delegates, a leader, sort of like a party leader, titled Proedro, was chosen to be the nominal head of the party in the Republic.
Finally, all the delegates, as well as the Proedros from all six Republican assemblies, convened at Athens to elect the members of the union's Ecclesia, the governing body for the union, the highest legislative body. Also, like how in Vijay's previous life the top officials of the Soviet Union used the term Soviets to describe themselves, the top officials of the UGSR, including the top delegates responsible for management of various aspects of the country, along with the Proedros, called themselves Ecclesiasts.
Athens
The Ecclesiasts sat at a round table within the majestic Acropolis of Athens, the architecture of ancient Greece that, despite its destruction, outshined all of the battered and bruised ancient city.
In the presence of the hundreds of Ecclesiasts was Piyush Rudrakarna, the commander of the Bharatiya Army, hundreds of delegates from all six republics, thousands of representatives, and tens of thousands of Bharatiya soldiers maintaining the security.
The six Proedros of the six republics were finally selected, but the one leader who was responsible for leading the union forward had yet to be chosen.
So the election was held in the presence of Piyush Rudrakarna, where all the Ecclesiasts started to vote for one general secretary to lead the union forward.
The contenders for the position were namely Theodoros Laskaridis from the Republic of Peloponnes, Andreas Melas from the Republic of Crete and the Islands, Spyridon Drakos from the Republic of Thrace, Athanasios Komnenos from the Republic of Anatolia, Konstantinos Mavros from the Republic of Syria, and finally the favorite to win the election, Georgios Paleologos from the Republic of Epirus and Thessaly.
The reason why he was the favorite was because he was the one person whose party held complete control over the republic he hailed from, and being the republic that was among the four heartland republics of Orthodox Greek regions in a communist union entirely composed of Greek people at the helm, he was able to easily win favor, especially as his stories of completely annihilating his opponents in his territory spread throughout, especially the story of the Little Devil Leander.
So when the election ended there was very little surprise. Georgios Paleologos, a farmer, became the first general secretary of the Union of Greek Socialist Republics, or, as the Europeans would get to know it in the future, the Ecclesian Union.
There was thunderous applause when the result was announced, even Piyush of the Bharatiya Empire stood up and clapped with a smile on his face.
Georgios Paleologos, clenching his fist, came forward in front of everyone and raised his hand, motioning everyone to quiet down so that he could speak.
" Comrades, Ecclesiasts of the union's Ecclesia, and people of the Union of Greek Socialist Republics! "
" Today is a day for which our ancestors sacrificed their lives, a day born from centuries of struggle against the chains of foreign tyranny. We stand here not as individuals but as the embodiment of the people's collective will, a will that could not be broken. For too long our land was ruled by those who did not understand its heart, for too long the labor of our hands and the genius of our minds were exploited to enrich others. But today the night of oppression has ended, the light of a new dawn, a red sun of liberation, rises over our beloved Greece. "
" Let this moment be the culmination of the sacred promise, the promise of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. "
" Our union is not merely a collection of land but a family of republics forged by shared experience. The fishermen from the islands of the Aegean, the farmers in the plains of Macedonia, the shepherds in the mountains of the Peloponnesus, and the distinct peoples of the land of Anatolia and Syria are all united. All of our own struggles are now part of a single shared triumph. "
" We must never forget what brought us to this day. We remember the brutal and inhumane rule of the Ottomans who sought to extinguish our culture and faith. They slaughtered our people based on their religion, desecrated our holy sites, and tried to strip us of our identity. They failed. Their tyranny only served to forge in us an iron will and a singular purpose, to cast off their yoke forever. Our union is the final definitive answer to their violence, it is our vow that such grievances shall never be suffered again. "
" Our path ahead is not one of ease but of purpose. We will rebuild our nation from the ground up, not for the profit of a few but for the prosperity of all. We will cultivate our lands, harness our resources, and restore the dignity of honest labor. Every decision made within the halls of this Ecclesia will be guided by one singular principle, the betterment of the people. "
" Let us carry forward the spirit of our revolution, a spirit that has been tempered by fire and purified by sacrifice, a spirit that is and will always be truly unbroken. The Old World is dead, a new era has begun, an era where every person is a master of their own destiny, and where the collective is stronger than any single ruler. Let us remember our sacred motto that brought us all together, the unbroken spirit, the people live forever. "
" Now let us begin the work of making our new republic a testament to this truth, for the union, for the people. "
