Chapter 78: Ch 78: Outside the Wall- Part 2
The snow whipped harshly across the land, a blinding curtain of white that reduced the world to little more than shadows and muffled sounds.
Their vision was nearly useless here. But Lucian didn't need it.
He stood calmly amidst the chaos, his mana spreading outward like a net, mapping every movement around him.
Each flicker of hostile intent, each surge of breath, each paw striking the snow was caught in his senses.
With that, he moved precisely, never wasting energy, never swinging blindly. His experience carried him with ease through the storm of claws and fangs.
The same could not be said for the others.
Verus was fighting well, his flames cutting through the shadows as if the storm itself couldn't touch him. Though he was still young and rough in technique, he had raw combat instincts that served him well. But Mira struggled.
The snow dulled her senses, clouding her bond with her wolves. Their growls blended with the snarls of the shadow beasts, and for the first time, she couldn't tell friend from foe. Her sword arm wavered, hesitating. The doubt in her heart froze her hand.
And hesitation in battle was death.
A hulking beast lunged toward her, its claws poised to tear deep into her side. Mira's eyes widened. She tried to step back, but the storm slowed her reaction.
The ground beneath the beast suddenly shifted. A jagged spike of earth shot upward, throwing the creature off balance.
The opening was brief—but enough. Mira's sword flashed, cutting clean through the beast's neck. It collapsed into the snow, lifeless.
Mira's chest heaved as she caught her breath. She looked over her shoulder.
Luna stood a short distance away, her sword drawn, her own battlefield littered with the writhing shadows of beasts torn apart by her magic.
It had been Luna who saved her.
But Luna didn't look back at her. Didn't even acknowledge her. She simply kept fighting, her expression cold and unbothered, as if saving Mira had been no more than a reflex.
Mira's lips pressed into a thin line. She opened her mouth to say something but closed it again when another beast lunged. She turned her focus back to the fight.
Meanwhile, Berry grunted, swinging his weapon to cleave a beast in half. His eyes darted through the storm, irritation clear on his face.
"This isn't working. We can't keep this up! We need a way to actually see what the hell we're fighting!"
As if to answer him, Luna slammed her palm into the snow. The ground rumbled, shifting beneath their feet, and the world tilted as walls of packed earth rose up around them.
Within moments, the biting wind was cut off. A makeshift cavern of stone surrounded them, shielding them from the storm.
Darkness fell inside the shelter.
Then Lucian raised his hand. Mana swirled to his palm, condensing into a sphere of light. It floated upward, splitting into dozens of glowing fragments that drifted through the cavern, clinging to the walls and ceiling.
Warm light bathed the group, chasing away the dark.
The sudden illumination stunned the beasts outside. Their distorted shadows flickered at the mouth of the cavern, uncertain whether to press forward or retreat.
Lucian's eyes narrowed.
"Now. Push forward."
The team surged out with renewed strength. Verus's flames flared, Mira's blade sliced cleanly through the enemies she could now see, Berry's strikes grew sharper, and Luna's magic tore through the beasts with ruthless efficiency.
Caught off guard, the shadow beasts wailed and staggered back. Within minutes, their numbers thinned, and finally, they retreated into the white storm, vanishing into the endless snow.
The cavern grew silent. Only the heavy breaths of the group and the low growls of Mira's wolves remained.
Mira immediately rushed toward her wolves, kneeling to check their injuries. Her hands moved quickly, reassuring them and confirming they were still able to move.
When she turned back to Lucian, she wore a determined expression.
"The cargo is fine. The wolves can still pull it. We can continue."
Lucian gave her a nod of acknowledgment.
"Good. We move."
The hours stretched on.
The storm still howled around them, but no more attacks came. The group kept their pace steady, trudging through the snow while the wolves pulled the heavy cart.
The monotony of the white landscape weighed on them, but the lack of enemies offered some relief.
By the time the sky began to darken beyond the veil of snow clouds, exhaustion tugged at them all. Even Verus, whose fire had burned brightly at the start, now held a tired look in his eyes.
Lucian halted the group.
"We'll rest here for the night."
He pressed his hand into the snow-covered ground. Mana surged outward. Slowly, thick trunks of trees rose from the frozen soil, leaves unfurling despite the cold.
Within moments, a grove formed—enough to break the wind and provide shelter.
The group moved inside the artificial forest, grateful for the reprieve. The wolves curled up near the cart, Mira tending to them carefully.
Berry leaned against a trunk, arms crossed, muttering about how he hated long journeys.
Luna sat silently, polishing her blade, her gaze occasionally flicking toward Verus. Verus, for his part, kept a wary distance from her, his arms crossed as though bracing himself against her glare.
Lucian, as always, looked unbothered. He cast his gaze around at his people, the shelter, the snowstorm just beyond the trees.
His mana continued to hum faintly in the air, vigilant even while they rested.
The next morning, the group rose early and resumed their journey toward the Luminous Village.
The forest Lucian had conjured the previous night now stood silent behind them, buried beneath fresh layers of snow. As the wolves pulled the cart forward, the team walked with heightened caution.
Every crunch of snow beneath their boots, every creak of ice from nearby trees made someone flinch. Even Berry, who usually tried to lighten the mood, remained quiet, his grip firm on his weapon.
The memory of the ambush still lingered, and the thought of another attack kept them all on edge.
