Chapter 77: Ch 77: Outside the Wall- Part 1

Once the city defenses were set in place and the barrier quietly humming overhead, Lucian finally allowed himself to leave the tower. He had little time to waste—an urgent mission awaited.

The first mission.

The one meant to set the tone for the future of Dawn Village and for Verus's role as the "hero."

Supplies, food, and medicine needed to be delivered to a nearby settlement, Lumious, and every instinct in Lucian told him this would not be a simple errand. Still, it had to be done.

He descended toward the southern post, where the team he had personally chosen was already waiting.

Mira was the first to spot him. Her face lit up, and she waved cheerfully, her blonde hair glinting in the cold light.

"Lucian! Over here!"

Lucian gave her a small nod, acknowledging her enthusiasm, and stepped closer to the gathered group.

Luna stood nearby with her arms crossed, her sharp eyes scanning the horizon as though daring the snow itself to challenge her. When she noticed Lucian's approach, she lifted her chin slightly.

"It's good to have our first delivery mission."

She said, her tone clipped but steady.

Before Lucian could answer, Mira clapped her hands together.

"Exactly! It feels like the start of something important, doesn't it? A new chapter for the village."

Luna scoffed, her arms tightening across her chest.

"You're exaggerating. This is a simple supply mission. Honestly, there was no need for this many people. I could've done it on my own."

Berry, who had been leaning lazily against one of the carts, chuckled at her words. He stepped forward, reached out, and ruffled Luna's hair.

"If you want us gone so badly, just say it. No need to twist your words into something complicated."

Luna's face instantly went crimson. She flailed her arms and tried to swat his hand away, stammering.

"T-That's not what I meant! Don't put words in my mouth, you idiot!"

Mira snorted with amusement, clearly enjoying Luna's frustration.

Lucian finally raised his hand, his calm voice cutting through the playful bickering.

"Enough. I know each of you is more than capable on your own. But after the recent incident, I'm not taking chances. There's something moving behind the scenes, and until I know what it is, I want everyone on high alert."

His tone carried enough weight to silence even Luna. She scowled, but she didn't argue further. Mira straightened her posture and nodded, determination burning in her eyes. Berry scratched the back of his neck but gave a small shrug of agreement.

Verus, standing quietly at the edge of the group, gave Lucian a sidelong glance. He hadn't said much since arriving, but Lucian noticed the guarded look in his eyes.

He was a man who had lived through war, thrust into a world where nothing made sense.

As the group began to move out, Lucian stepped closer to Verus and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Don't worry. Everything will be fine. We'll handle this together."

Verus gave him a steady look before answering. "I'm not worried. I've seen worse. Let's just get this done."

Lucian nodded. He didn't press further.

The group departed from Dawn Village, their wolves pulling a heavy cart loaded with supplies.

Driving through the snow with machines was too dangerous here; the terrain was unpredictable, and the cold ruined engines. The wolves, loyal and accustomed to harsh climates, were the safer option.

The journey began smoothly. The snow was light, and visibility was good. The forest of the World Tree stretched far behind them as they pushed into the frozen expanse.

But after crossing a certain point, the weather shifted.

Snowflakes thickened, the wind howled, and within minutes, they were caught in a storm. The world around them became a blur of white, erasing the line between earth and sky.

Lucian raised his voice above the wind.

"Everyone, stay close to the cargo! If we lose track of each other, we'll never regroup in this storm!"

He expected a chorus of acknowledgment. But none came.

The silence cut through him sharper than the cold. His eyes narrowed, and a curse slipped under his breath.

He closed his eyes briefly, drawing in mana and letting it flow outward like a pulse. The storm roared, but in his senses, the world became clearer.

Yes. They were still nearby—Luna, Mira, Berry, Verus, and the wolves. But they weren't alone.

Shapes. Dozens of them. Large, heavy, and moving with the weight of predators. They slithered between the storm winds, closing in from every direction.

"Be ready! We're surrounded—an ambush!"

Lucian barked, his voice carrying authority even against the blizzard.

He wasn't finished speaking when the first beast lunged.

It emerged from the white veil like a nightmare, a hulking creature with twisted limbs and glowing eyes, its body half-shrouded in shadow.

It lunged directly for the cart, aiming to destroy the supplies.

Lucian's hand flicked upward, and a barrier of compressed mana slammed into place. The beast collided with it, the impact shaking the snow loose from nearby trees.

"Protect the cargo! Do not let them scatter us!"

Lucian commanded, his tone brooking no refusal.

The wolves growled in unison, teeth bared as they formed a defensive ring around the cart.

Mira's sword gleamed with mana as she stepped forward, slicing cleanly through a shadowy limb that darted too close.

Luna slammed her foot down, the ground beneath the snow hardening into jagged spikes that tore through the approaching beasts.

Berry drew his blade, his usual cheer gone, replaced with the cold focus of a veteran fighter. He planted himself near the rear, cutting down anything that tried to flank them.

And Verus—though his eyes widened at the sheer number of monsters emerging from the storm—raised his hand, flames sparking to life in his palm.

The fire glowed brilliantly in the blizzard, his expression hardening as he prepared to fight.

The storm howled. Shadows screamed. Steel clashed against twisted limbs, and fire burst through the white void.

Lucian stood at the center, his presence steady, his mana radiating outward like a beacon in the chaos. He had been right.

'So we did end up getting attacked after all.'
