Chapter 101: Ch 101: Treasure Hunt - Part 4

Luna writhed in Jamie's grip like a feral cat, her teeth clenched, every muscle tense. But no matter how she twisted, Jamie's arm locked around her waist like iron.

"Stop squirming, kid. If this is the best you've got, you'll never break free from me."

Jamie muttered, lips quirking into a smug grin.

That only made Luna glare harder. A low growl bubbled out of her throat, rough and animalistic, echoing down the broken scrap-lined path.

Her pride screamed at her to keep fighting, but her reason told her she was wasting her strength. Reluctantly, she went still, but her growling didn't stop.

Jamie rolled her eyes.

"Annoying little wolf."

Verus, trailing behind, cast a worried look over his shoulder.

The thundering boom of the junkyard's collapse still echoed in his ears, and the thick mana in the air made his skin prickle.

"Are we… really just going to leave him?"

His voice was low but laced with unease.

Jamie didn't even glance back.

"And do what, exactly? Rush in after him and get torn apart? He's better off alone. You'd just drag him down."

Verus flinched but didn't argue. He knew she was right, but it didn't ease the weight sitting in his chest.

Jamie continued, sharp eyes flicking to the shadows ahead. Her instincts screamed danger. She tightened her grip on Luna and gestured for Verus to keep his guard up.

"Save that energy for something useful. You want to help him? Survive. Make it back alive. Deliver what we salvaged. That's your job now."

The wind shifted, carrying with it a foul stench. Jamie's pupils narrowed.

"Monsters."

She hissed.

Shadows rippled among the heaps of twisted metal, pairs of glowing eyes blinking into existence.

The junkyard's residents—drawn by the surge of divine energy and now prowling for prey.

"Stay close. And keep your whining down."

Jamie ordered.

Luna snarled again but obeyed, falling in step. Verus readied his blade, his knuckles white.

Meanwhile, Lucius had strayed deeper into the wasteland. The ground trembled beneath his boots, shards of broken machines jutting up like jagged teeth.

A guttural roar split the air. The first beast lunged—an armored hulk twice his size, plated in rusted metal fused with bone.

Lucius's gun was already in his hand, the barrel glowing faintly with mana.

Bang.

The bullet struck true, but it ricocheted off the creature's armor, leaving only a shallow dent. Lucius's lips curved faintly.

"So. You're not the disposable trash I'm used to."

The monster charged again, its claws carving furrows into the earth. Lucius rolled aside, fluid and sharp, then fired again—this time lacing the bullet with a thread of mana.

The shot pierced deeper, staggering the beast.

But before he could finish it, movement flickered at the edges of his vision. Two more emerged from the haze, moving in sync.

Lucius raised his gun, but they didn't charge recklessly. They spread out, cutting off his angles. Their movements weren't random—they were coordinated, hunting him with grim precision.

Lucius's brows drew together.

"Tch. So this is how it's going to be."

The first monster roared and lunged again. As Lucius sidestepped, the second swept in low, claws swiping for his legs. He leapt over it, only to meet the third already mid-swing.

Clang!

His blade shot out from his other hand, blocking the strike. Sparks flew.

For the first time in a while, Lucius's expression sharpened with something close to excitement. His muscles coiled, his system humming faintly with warnings and static.

These creatures weren't fodder. They were hunters.

"Finally. Something worth my time."

Lucius muttered under his breath, pushing back against the beast's strike.

He twisted, using the momentum to vault over the monster's back. Midair, his gun flared, mana surging through the chamber.

He fired three rounds in rapid succession, each bullet glowing brighter than the last.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

The armored beast staggered, holes punched through its plating. Black ichor sprayed, sizzling against the ground.

But even wounded, it refused to fall.

The other two closed in, jaws snapping, claws flashing.

Lucius hit the ground and spun, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. His gun gleamed in one hand, his blade in the other. His body shifted into the rhythm of combat, every movement precise and sharp.

The monsters roared in unison, and Lucius welcomed them with cold fire in his eyes.

______

Back with Jamie's group, the monsters had begun trailing closer, their guttural growls echoing in the ruins. Verus's breath grew tight as he glanced at the flickering shadows.

"They're surrounding us."

Jamie's smirk widened, almost feral.

"Good. Makes it easier to shoot them."

She shifted Luna into Verus's arms without warning.

"Keep her out of trouble."

"What—hey!"

Luna protested, kicking. Verus grunted but held her steady.

Jamie drew her pistols, the metallic click sharp in the tense air.

"Time to channel that energy, kids. Stay behind me and live. That's the deal."

Without waiting for a reply, she opened fire.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

The air lit up with gunfire.

______

Lucius, far away, felt the reverberation of Jamie's shots in the distance. He didn't allow himself the luxury of distraction.

The three monsters before him roared again, their armored bodies glinting under the moonlight.

Lucius's grip tightened on his weapons. His mana surged, burning through his veins, and his system whispered static warnings in his ears.

But his voice was calm. Almost amused.

"Come, then. Let's see how long you can keep me entertained."

He stepped forward into the fray.

The monsters struck in unison, claws and fangs crashing toward Lucius like a storm. He twisted between them, bullets flashing from his gun, his blade carving arcs of silver light.

Each strike found a gap, a seam in their armor, but the beasts only grew fiercer, feeding on the divine energy saturating the air.

Lucius's breath came steady, his body moving with lethal precision, yet the static in his head pulsed louder, like the system itself was straining.

"Stronger than trash. But still trash all the same."

Lucius muttered, eyes narrowing.

And with that, he pressed harder.
