Chapter 159: Going all out! [1]
'Maybe this is the day I die'.
There's a certain clarity that comes once a soldier arrives at this realization during a battlefield or war.
It's even more potent than post-nut clarity.
And the moment Leon made that realization, time seemed to stop for him.
His brain entered a state of overdrive as through the sensors of his sword drone, he looked and observed the battlefield where 2 of his teammates already died, dissecting all the pieces in this battlefield.
On one side, Captain Raveman and Piper were already dead.
On another side, Captain Ariande got it worse than him as 2 of the chains hooked on both of her hands, keeping her in one place as a stationery target.
And as if things couldn't get worse for her, her energy shield was overloaded first.
BAM!
3 javelins punched through the NetRunner's body, one of them piercing straight through her heart!
"Ahh…!" Ariande staggered and gasped, coughing blood.
As for Lieutenant Levi, as a Cyber Gladiator and as an assassin-type Ascended, his reflexes were inherently far faster than his other teammates.
2 black chains shot for him but he reacted at the last moment, moving his right hand out of the way with insane reflexes as only one of the chains connected, latching on to his left hand.
When the javelins started descending, he reacted.
Kinetic Absorption!
Overdrive Mode!
Servo Reflex!
Unlike all his teammates, he managed to activate 3 abilities instantaneously even as violent purple ADE erupted around his body.
Then he danced around the javelins like a prime Michael Jackson!
But even for him, an assassin-type Cyber Gladiator, there was a limit to his reaction speed and reflexes even with all the abilities that he activated.
Afterall, unlike a certain terrorist, he didn't have Cat DNA.
BAM!
One of the javelins finally hit but his energy shield erupted at the last millisecond, saving him. For now, it held.
BAM!
It didn't survive the second hit, his energy shield shattered!
BAM!
Another javelin finally met his body, cutting the side of his face and leaving a nasty gash through his cheek, almost severing his right shoulder.
That slowed him down, then…
BAM!
Another javelin stabbed through his left calf, punching through muscle, bone, and tissue together as Levi cried out in pain.
He became a stationery target.
As for Lieutenant Cormier, he was too slow to react as the black chain caught his dominant right hand, restraining him and instantly crippling his combat power by more than half.
When the javelins came, he had no answer to dodge them. He was exposed.
But sometimes, you don't always have to know the answer to pass an examination.
Sometimes, you can cheat.
Sometimes, you can use ChatGPT and still pass your examination.
Lieutenant Cormier's cheat was the simple fact that unlike Levi and Ariande, he was a bonafide E Rank Gene Augur and unlike Raveman, he was not asleep.
BZZZ!
His orange ADE flared even as the javelins descended, destroying his energy shield in no time and puncturing holes through his body.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
His flesh was torn apart, his blood spilled like rain, his organs were rent asunder, and yet…
Adaptive Tissue!
Cell Repair!
Metabolic Overdrive!
Yet Lieutenant Cormier was still alive, riding the life-threatening barrage of javelin attacks with raw vitality, regeneration and endurance.
His ADE flared, his blood regenerated, his flesh regenerated, even brand new organs were created, replacing those that were torn asunder in the barrage.
This was the horror of facing an E Rank Gene Augur in battle.
But he was only enduring. With his dominant right hand shackled by the chain, even if it was nowhere capable of immediately draining his ocean-like reserves of ADE stored in his blood, it still heavily restrained his combat threat.
Most importantly, he couldn't even move from his current position as the black chain kept him in one place.
The same limitation applied to the 2 other E Rank Gene Augurs. Heavily restrained by the chains, they couldn't retaliate against the terrorists but they endured.
They were surviving.
But the same thing could not be said about Lieutenant Jones, the other E Rank Cyber Gladiator in this elite squad.
Just like Lieutenant Levi and unlike the others in the squad, they both had insane reflexes but there was a limit to how much reflexes can carry them.
Reflexes didn't mean much when it was an AOE attack like this.
Lieutenant Jones was even slower than Levi. And unlike Levi who managed to dodge 2 of the chains that shot at him, Jones was fast but he was not as fast as Levi to be able to dodge.
2 chains also shot at him and both met their targets, completely restraining him just like Lieutenant Ariande.
He paid for it dearly.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Lieutenant Jones shuddered as the javelins overloaded his energy shield in seconds and punctured holes through his body.
2 stabbed through his back, 1 through his right leg, and 1 through his neck!
He was pinned in one place like a Goat put on a stake during Christmas; he couldn't move, he couldn't react, he couldn't endure either.
He bled heavily from all orifices in his body.
It won't take more than 10 seconds for him to take his last breathe!
In that single moment that time seemed to stop for him, his brain working on overdrive, Leon saw it all through the eyes of his drone even as the terrorists kept prowling around them like a pack of Hyenas eager to pounce on prey.
'I am going to die'. Leon realized.
In that moment, it was no longer maybe, he knew and was convinced that he would die today.
That realization… that shit messes with your brain mentally.
It drives you mad.
Maybe it did drive Leon mad, maybe he was already mad but who cares?
To him, all that mattered was that the same terrorists that he loathed and hated so much were right in front of him, so who cared if he died? What mattered was that he also take them with him!
In that moment, abstraction took place in Leon's head.
Convenience? Survival? Regret? Those are luxury for people who had a choice but right now, Leon had no choice.
He only saw one feasible choice before him.
And so, his brain abstracted every other thing else from his mind, focusing on a single-minded obsession with insane determination.
'Even if I die, how do I make sure they die with me?'
His brain couldn't cook up a feasible answer on the spot, and so Leon abandoned rationality for the first time since awakening in this world and took matters into his own hands, embracing chaos.
'F*ck the world!' Leon thought, his black eyes gleaming with raw insanity.
'Let's dine in hell!'
He threw his black backpack up, overturning all its contents, and then he jumped and kicked with his right leg, aiming at a certain number of grenades, sending 8 different grenades towards the terrorists.
The force of the kick set them off, then…
KABOOM!
They detonated in mid-air with a deafening noise!
2 flashbang grenades, another illumination grenade, 2 chemical grenades, 2 fragmentation grenades, 2 incendiary grenades, and 2 blast grenades!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
In a game of chess, it was like setting your Queen lose to wreak havoc.
For the first time since the elite squad walked into the carefully orchestrated trap of the terrorists, the terrorists' game plan wobbled and showed cracks.
And yet, Leon was not done, he was far from done.
With all his teammates targetedly immobilized, he was the only one equipped to retaliate against the terrorists.
It looked like a 7v1, but in truth it was a 1v5!
The flames of the incendiary grenades, the deadly fragments of the fragmentation grenades, the shockwave of the blast grenades, plus the sonic and blast damage of the flashbang grenades rattled the terrorists.
And in that window, the content of the chemical grenades spread like an insidious poison through the air.
Leon no longer cared about friendly fire, afterall, his teammates were no longer in the battle in the first place.
Besides, since only Gene Augurs remained alive he reckoned that they would endure the chemical gas more than most of the terrorists.
To avoid killing them was the reason why he kicked only 2; 2 chemical grenades were not enough to saturate this large subterranean chamber.
His chemical grenades contained a potent gas chemical that when inhaled, within a few seconds, an F Rank Ascended would start having a seizure.
It would take a dozen seconds for an E Rank Ascended to start having a seizure but after over 30 seconds to 1 minute, there was a chance of an Ascended without enough resistance having a cardiac arrest!
One of this grenade cost hundreds of Neo Credits simply because of the potent gas chemical, but to Leon, it was worth it.
But before the gas could even spread…
CRKSH!
Leon's R9 energy shield finally shattered!
Yet, he showed no fear, his black eyes filled with fierce killing intent as he glared at the terrorists.
Leon showed no fear because he had backups.
Only a broke Mechanist would have just 1 energy shield.
Unlike his teammates, with the relevant knowledge to create energy shields of his own, Leon had a literal catalogue of energy shields.
The moment the first one shattered, another one took its place.
They were expensive but who cares? This was the power of money, and money was an essential power of an E Rank Mechanist!
Even as the barrage of javelins continued, with Leon's own grenade barrage briefly rattling the terrorists and preventing them from targeting him immediately, he found leverage to do more.
With his left wrist shackled by the chain still, he couldn't move from one place and do much but protected by his energy shields, he didn't need to move to attack and deal damage.
As the contents of his backpack clattered to the ground while making metallic sounds, Leon's grayish white ADE flared again.
BZZZ!
Drone Control Matrix!
Instantly, five C-5 drones rose into the air, turning invisible and giving him 5 unseen eyes around this subterranean chamber as he got omniscient view of the chamber.
With his omniscient view now tracking the movement of the terrorists, over 50 sword drones suddenly rose into the air!
Yes, at E Rank, a Mechanist's Drone Control Matrix can only control up to 5 drone units simultaneously and this was why Leon only unleashed five C-5 drones to grant him omniscient view of this subterranean chamber.
But who said he needed to personally control the sword drones?
"Davis". He called.
DING!
"Yes master!"
The A.I that he took almost a week to program answered and took control of all the sword drones, instantly locking on the terrorists.
Some of the sword drones fell victim to the barrage of javelins as they ascended, but Leon had more than enough for redundancy as Davis quickly controlled the majority of them to leave the barrage area of the javelins.
Then they shot toward the terrorists!
At the same time that this happened, with his omniscient vision tracking the position of the terrorists, Leon suddenly started kicking at the ground.
On the ground were the contents of his leather backpack, and the contents of his backpack were dozens of different toy-sized weapons and gadgets.
Leon kicked toy-sized spears, war axes, daggers, longswords, maces, halberds, and more grenades.
The only reason why he didn't kick a jury-rigged bomb was because he didn't want to kill his teammates who were still in the vicinity.
Just before the weapons and gadgets he kicked could leave his vicinity and accelerate towards the terrorists, his grayish white ADE flared again.
BZZZ!
Miniaturization!
All of a sudden, from their previous toy-size, these weapons expanded and enlarged, becoming lethal titanium weapons and gadgets.
They all shot at the terrorists!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Instantly, the terrorists were forced to cower and dodge.
For the first time since the perfectly orchestrated ambush took place, the outcome no longer seemed set in stone.
Finally, there was a deviation from the script; a single Mechanist singlehandedly tore the original script apart.
This was not the restrained Thomas Riley that was seen on live TV that fought against King Agama, this was an unhinged Thomas Riley!
Watching as his well-orchestrated ambush started unraveling, the predicted timeframe to overwhelm all the soldiers drawing closer with one of them still resisting, Lucian's eyes narrowed into slits.
BZZZ!
He exhaled through his nose, then he charged forward.
