Right in the midst of a deadly ambush surrounded by deadly Ascended E Rank terrorists, he slept!

Leon was alarmed. 'Not good!'

He was the only one among the elite squad who could see currently in the darkness, and he was the only one who realized how fast things just turned from bad to downright catastrophic.

He wanted to help but he didn't have the luxury as with his katana, the terrorist with Cat DNA once again lunged at him while leaving afterimages behind.

Having fought against this terrorist alongside Lieutenant Johnmark before and knowing just how dangerous he was, Leon knew he couldn't afford to have his attention divided as he focused and reacted.

The terrorist stabbed, aiming straight at his heart!

In response, Leon dipped his hand into his backpack and pulled out a toy-sized Spear, the Flux Crystal Spear!

Miniaturization!

The Spear expanded as he instantly stabbed forward in retaliation; his aim was inch perfect as the tip of both weapons collided.

CLANG!

Sparks ignited in the dark.

Against the raw strength of an E Rank Cyber Gladiator, Leon didn't stand a chance as the force made him stagger backward, but despite this he didn't keep his attention on the Cat DNA terrorist.

Instead, his attention once again switched to Captain Raveman through the drone as he became desperate.

'I need to help him! I need to…'

It was too late.

The moment Captain Raveman slept, he became vulnerable as his body and his bodily defenses relaxed completely.

At E Rank, Gene Augurs were known as tanks, unkillable cockroaches but this is only so because of a series of ability combinations and traits.

An E Rank Gene Augur is unkillable because they actively use their ADE to harden their skin, boost muscle density, including Cell Repair, their ability to store ADE directly in blood, and because of their ability to develop secondary organ systems fed by ADE.

Combined, all these abilities turned them into undying cockroaches.

But this incredible survivability relied on one simple factor- the factor that the Gene Augur stays conscious to use all the combinations to stay unkillable.

Afterall, ADE is what ruled Ascended combat. Without ADE to utilize Ascended abilities, an E Rank Gene Augur is just a man with an exaggerated superhuman physique.

By sleeping mid-combat, Captain Raveman became vulnerable.

And with all his teammates still instinctively defending themselves, groping in the darkness for their night-vision googles while unaware of his predicament, Captain Raveman became a sitting duck.

In that moment, Leon realized. 'This is the crux of the ambush!'

In that moment, he felt despair.

Captain Raveman was extremely powerful. And with his D Rank Artifact, he was basically a walking nuclear disaster but unconscious and sleeping, all that power meant nothing.

He couldn't even use the Artifact.

What followed was almost instantaneous, a methodical breakdown of a mighty Ascended once thought unkillable.

Lucian pounced on Captain Raveman's undamaged shoulder before revealing extremely long vampire-like fangs as he bit Raveman on the shoulder.

At this moment, Lucian looked like a true Demon.

BZZZ!

His gold and white ADE flared.

In that moment, through the vision of his drone, Leon thought he saw the shadow of the grim reaper of death hovering above Captain Raveman.

Leon didn't know exactly what Lucian did with that devilish bite, but even while sleeping, Captain Raveman's body shuddered violently after the bite as his body visibly turned pale.

His face scrunched up like he wanted to wake up…

'Wake up!' Leon screamed in his mind, but Captain Raveman didn't wake up. The ability of a Quantum Shaper was that potent and devilishly insidious, and then…

BAM!

Lucian jumped off his body just in time as a bright flash of blue briefly illuminated the darkness as a hot plasma beam slammed into Captain Raveman's chest, tearing a large circular hole through his chest!

This attack was from another terrorist.

Captain Raveman's unconscious body staggered weakly even while still sleeping, then a third terrorist joined the party as emerging out of nowhere and wrapping his legs around Captain Raveman's neck, he ruthlessly twisted his head.

CRACK!

Captain Raveman's head twisted 180 degrees, he was made to see behind his body while his body stayed still!

The Captain's unconscious body shuddered in its final struggles.

Then the assassin-like terrorist with a pair of Kukri knives stabbed them into the Captain's already broken neck before dragging his knives across the neck, slicing all the way through!

Blood sprinkled and Captain Raveman's head was separated from his body!

"…!"

Leon watched in horror.

Thud!

The head collapsed to the ground which was soon followed by the body; Captain Raveman was dead.

From the moment when the lights went off till now, not even 3 seconds have passed and yet one of the strongest Ascended of the elite squad, the Captain was murdered in cold blood!

Leon froze, struggling to comprehend the sudden situation, then…

Bam!

Jake's katana stabbed at his abdomen, but his R9 energy shield materialized to protect him, shaking him off his reverie.

Only at that moment did some of his teammates finally put on their night-vision googles, and then they finally saw in the dark.

"…!"

What they experienced felt like closing your eyes for a moment and waking up only to find yourself inside a nightmare.

They saw Captain Raveman lying lifelessly on the ground, his head already separated from his body!

He was dead.

An E Rank Gene Augur with a D Rank Artifact died just like that, mysteriously, within less than 3 seconds!

Not just him, they also saw Piper lying lifelessly on the ground and towering above her corpse was another terrorist, a hefty-looking terrorist in black paramilitary armor wielding a pair of Falchion swords.

The E Rank Cyber Gladiator was diced to death!

Her body was dismembered, her limbs lying on one side, with pieces of her flesh littered everywhere around the chassis left of her corpse.

Within just 3 seconds, the terrorists completed a lethal ambush that took out 2 Ascended of the elite squad!

And at this moment, even as they finally regained the ability to see in the dark, the terrorists were already moving again to surround them again.

Seeing this, Leon's face twisted in rage.

'F*CK!' He screamed in his mind.

He felt his blood boil, he felt adrenaline surge through him like a flood, and then he locked in.

With his right hand still holding the Flux Crystal Spear, his left hand dipped into his black leather backpack and brought out a white and blue circular object then he threw it towards the terrorists.

Within less than a second, it detonated.

BAM!

An explosion didn't erupt out of it though.

Instead, bright white illumination instantly erupted from the illumination grenade, chasing the darkness away as the large subterranean chamber became illuminated again.

The sudden death of their squad leader and another one of their comrades impacted the squad's psyche heavily, but they didn't flinch as the terrorists charged at them again.

Afterall, they were not rookies.

They were all E Rank Ascended, proven veteran soldiers.

Instead of panicking, all the training of the past 2 days came surging back as they instantly moved into a seamless battle formation.

They still had the numbers superiority, it was still a 5v7.

With the light from the illumination grenade, they could see clearly now and with sight came confidence.

SHWING!

Lieutenant Jones unsheathed a pair of sharp Sabers, his eyes gleaming with a yearning for murder.

Lieutenant Ryan unsheathed his sharp longsword, Lieutenant Cormier grabbed his War Hammer tight, while Lieutenant Johnmark grabbed his War Axe as the 4 moved, spreading out in a circle while protecting the physically weaker members of the squad in the middle of the battle formation.

Leon, Captain Ariande, and Lieutenant Levi stayed in the middle of the battle formation even as they also grabbed their weapons.

Wielding a pair of plasma knives, Captain Ariande attacked first. Her azure eyes glowed green as her neon green ADE flared around her body.

Data Lash!

All 5 terrorists shuddered as the mental attack dealt damage to them.

At the same time that Captain Ariande attacked, Leon who already held his Terra Nova 71 Rifle while keeping it on its first slot aimed and pulled the trigger.

His target was the Demon of Ozempic.

BAM!

A violent red pulse beam erupted from the Rifle's muzzle, shooting straight at Lucian but then the Demon of Ozempic grabbed at the air in front of him and swiped.

Quantum Touch!

Gold and white ADE erupted around Lucian's right hand, then the violent red pulse beam slightly veered off its path!

'What?!' Leon felt like everything he knew about the world was being overturned all of a sudden.

Lucian defied physics with ADE!

With the pulse beam veering slightly off its path, Lucian managed to dodge the attack and then his gold and white ADE flared again.

Gravity Pulse!

Leon felt gravity instantly become 2 times heavier with an audible humming sound as suddenly, alongside all the other soldiers, he lost his balance.

They all immediately tried to regain their balance, but then…

The E Rank NetRunner among the terrorists retaliated!

Leon felt like his thoughts were about to explode.

He was intimately familiar with this ability as it was one of Talia's favorite abilities after becoming an E Rank NetRunner, but never had he been on the receiving end of the ability with malicious intent.

The combination of the sudden gravity alteration plus the mind attack rattled all 7 soldiers, rendering them briefly immobile.

In that moment, Leon felt a premonition. 'Not good!'

This was exactly how they took Captain Raveman out.

He wanted to react, he needed to react, but he couldn't react fast enough as BOOM! The walls surrounding them suddenly exploded and from inside, thick black chains surged out towards them.

The chains cleverly evaded the terrorists, homing on the soldiers like heat-seeking missiles.

The chains had hook-like clasps at their tips for holding onto surfaces.

There were 10 different chains and with 2 of the targets already dead, there was a surplus enough to grab onto all of them.

CLAMP!

Leon shuddered as one of the chains lashed onto his left wrist, the hook clasping around his hand.

Since the chain itself wasn't threatening to his life, his R9 energy shield wasn't triggered and then, Leon felt a sudden drain.

He looked at his wrist and his eyes dilated. 'It's draining my ADE!'

He barely had the thought when multiple compartments suddenly opened in the ceiling above this subterranean chamber.

From the compartments in the ceiling, long black javelins shot down towards toward different areas of this subterranean chamber. The terrorists cleverly avoided all the areas directly under the compartments in the ceiling.

As for the 7 soldiers, the position where they gathered in a circular battle formation was right under one of the compartments.

Leon's eyes constricted. 'They predicted us huddling together in a battle formation?'

'F*ck!' In that moment, Leon felt despair.

He felt like a rat stuck in a coliseum who was forced to fight gladiator games, he felt like he was stuck in a game of chess where he was losing.

The ambush was thorough, there was no loopholes to exploit.

In their home territory and having prepared for them, the terrorists were always one step ahead of them.

The javelins descended.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

Leon's R9 energy shield erupted again.

Through the eyes of his still intact sword drone, Leon saw the scientists that were previously in this subterranean chamber also being slaughtered by the onslaught of javelins.

He shuddered, unnerved by the ruthlessness of the terrorists.

CRKSH!

Captain Ariande's energy shield was overloaded first, then…

BAM!

3 different javelins punched through the NetRunner's body at the same time, one of them piercing straight through her heart!

"Ahh…!" Ariande gasped as she coughed blood; she staggered.

Again, Leon froze.

'We've been outplayed,' was the only thought ringing in his head.

Through the footage of his sword drone, he saw Captain Raveman and Piper's lifeless bodies again, he saw his desperate teammates who were wholly out of their depth, and he saw the light of life fading in Ariande's eyes.

In that moment, Leon finally realized. 'Maybe this is the day I die'.

The moment he made the realization, he accepted it but he wasn't consumed by fear due to it, instead he was consumed by rage and defiance.

'F*ck the world!' He thought, his black eyes becoming incredibly deep and unfathomable as he glared at the terrorists.

'Let's dine in hell!'

He threw his leather backpack up, overturning all its contents!
