Chapter 57: [57] Inches Away From Death
Chapters after this point are under heavy editing. I had to rush to upload them, but I should be done in a day or two.
Just wait a bit.
Humans generally had no issues with half elves. You would often get a look from a few people who believed in keeping races pure and free of 'filth'. But it was nothing too severe.
It was the elves that were the problem…
When an elf saw a half-elf, their first thoughts were to kill them. Wipe them off the face of the planet and be done with it.
That was why there were no half elves in the elven kingdom, why he was raised here instead, and why most elves that married humans, although a bit rare, lived in human lands.
For a half elf, meeting an elf, especially one old enough to share ideals with the older generation was never a good thing.
Stark glanced at his blade.
It was just on the table, very much within reach then he glanced back at Kael.
So far he had done nothing, but there was this expression in his eyes, one that dared him to make a move.
And so he did.
Whoosh!
Stark moved, swooping up his blade with fluid movements and lifting it to Kael's throat. But Kael was not just watching him, he had pulled out a dagger of his own, a wooden dagger far more terrifying than any steel blade.
By their side, Jade had not moved a muscle, yet her actions were clear, in the form of a large crystal spike that was charging forward.
Sleepy Eurus seemed to have awoken the moment the conflict had begun, he reached into the air and seemingly pulled out a sword out of darkness itself, swinging it with terrifying precision
The normally nervous boy had vanished, giving way to a fiend of darkness.
Whoosh!
A strong wind blew past them due to their sudden movements, sending their hair billowing by their sides.
Their table vibrated, and there was silence.
Stark had his dagger underneath Kael's jaw, the blade seconds away from ripping into his skin.
Kael's dagger was so close to Stark's eyes that he could see the little details of the dagger and even count the number of glowing runes etched on it.
The nervous boy, Eurus, had shadows flowing around him like a veil of darkness, the area around him icy cold, and his sword even colder as it pressed against Stark's neck.
And by his head, were several large crystal spikes that were seconds away from digging into his skull.
Only Jasmine was still seated, a confused look on her face. "W-what are you guys doing?!"
Kael's gaze was cold and piercing as he accessed Stark from behind his spectacles.
Then he scoffed and pulled back his dagger, only then did the tension settle down, and all of them lowered their weapons.
"If these were the elven lands then I would have no choice but to kill you as per the order of the queen."
He tossed his dagger into the air, and it suddenly grew wings and flew into his skin, causing Stark to blink.
"But these aren't the elven lands are they?" He finished.
Stark settled back in his chair, glaring at the man. For a second he was sure he was going to die right then and there.
Kael was not Caylus that he had much time to prepare for, if they were to clash then his chances would have been slim.
And as for the other boy…
Stark stole a glance at him. He was back to his regular nervous self, but the version of him he had seen remained blurred in his mind.
He was like the devil, ruthless, cold and unforgiving.
Stark had no doubt that if it came to it and he were somehow defeated, he could have sliced off his head without an atom of remorse.
Thwack!
"Ouwww!"
Jasmine smacked the back of Eurus' head before angrily turning to Kael.
"Serious professor, you need to stop doing this to everyone we meet! You always give them a bad impression of us!"
"Everyone?" Stark asked, surprised.
He had initially thought it was because he was a half elf that he acted this way.
Kael adjusted his glasses, glancing to the side. "It was to test their… umm… dexterity?"
"Why are you asking me?!" Jasmine sighed and turned to stark. "Sorry about him…"
"It's fine, let's get to business shall we?"
Jade leaned towards the table and stared at the drawing. "So this is supposed to help us kill that thing?"
"Not kill it, capture it."
"Capture it?" She asked, sounding confused. "I thought beast tamer only dealt in mythical beasts?"
Kael nodded. "That was true some years back, but these days we have started looking into other monsters apart from our contracted beasts."
He pulled out a pencil from his pocket and pointed at the drawing of the beast.
"The monster you are after is of particular interest to me as it is highly rare, it is called the Snow Mimic."
Jasmine placed a finger on her lip and stared at the drawing. "Mimic? It looks nothing like a mimic."
"It is not that type of mimic, it is a true mimic that can take the form of other beasts, people and even objects." Kael explained.
Eurus turned to face him. "D-doesn't that mean it's d-dangerous?"
"Not particularly, from the sightings this one is still very young. It won't be able to even change from. That is what makes this too good of an opportunity to pass up on."
He went on to explain more details about the mimic and how he planned on catching it, before rolling up the parchment.
"Young mimics leave their mothers early and move to the higher parts of the mountain where the cold is strongest. That way, they can nurture their bodies."
"I already have everything prepared and I have taken all necessary precautions but that doesn't mean it will be smooth sailing..."
"…The mountain is filled with monsters far more terrifying than the mimic, and the steepness of the cliff is more than enough to torture both your body and mind."
"Do we all understand?"
Since everyone seems to be in understanding, he stood up and placed the parchment back into his shirt.
"Then let's be off. We need to be up and down that mountain before sundown."
