Chapter 186: Choose your words carefully
When Hades was leaving for the academy, he never asked for an attendant—because he knew anyone who went with him would be punished by the Count.
Everyone in the mansion knew how much Trevon despised Hades. That's why the redhead didn't expect anyone to accompany him. Not that he needed anyone—he had learned to live on his own.
He had grown up mostly alone, teaching himself the things he needed for daily life—washing clothes, cooking, sweeping, and fixing what he could.
But there was one person who, just like his mother, had always cared for him in secret. She would prepare small gifts for his birthday, save a portion of food in case he came by, and sometimes even lend him a bit of her own wages.
She knew the consequences of supporting the young master but she never failed to show concern for him when she got the chance.
And when the day of his departure finally came, that woman stepped out of the shadows, her heart full of worry and warmth, and asked to serve him.
Her name was Tia.
The only woman—besides Kayla—who was close to him at the academy.
Someone who cared for him like a mother, joked with him like a friend, scolded him like an older sister, and grew angry for his sake like a guardian.
She was his guardian.
Parting ways was not easy on either of them but at that time, they didn't have any other option.
However, it was not the time for grieving the past but to cherish their present.
Seeing the two of them embrace, not a single woman in the room felt a trace of jealousy—only warmth filled their hearts.
Hades had already told Peri about Tia, and Luna too knew of the maid who had once been so close to him before Count Trevon took her away.
Hades felt his chest tighten, his eyes softening as he whispered, "I missed you."
Tia sniffled, her voice trembling, "Me too, young master… I'm so glad you're safe."
Ever since the day she was taken away, not a single day had passed without her thinking or worrying about him. She had heard many things from Lady Quintessa—some good, some frightening—but with no way to reach him, all she could do was hope that he was all right.
When Hades came to meet his mother, unfortunately, Tia wasn't in the town.
But she knew she would meet him one day.
Thankfully, she didn't have to wait for too long.
"As you can see, I'm doing fine," Hades said with a faint smile as he slowly pulled away from her.
Tia looked at him carefully. In the past, he had always carried the air of someone mature beyond his years, but there had still been a trace of childlike innocence in his eyes—a softness she had cherished deeply. To her, Hades would always be that boy she once looked after.
But now… he stood before her as a man—strong, calm, and refined by the weight of his experiences.
"Come," Hades said, glancing toward the two girls who had been watching quietly all along. "Let me introduce you to my wives."
Tia was startled, "You are married already…and not one but two?"
"Whaaaat?!"
Following her words, came a loud exclamation from the entrance of the reception hall.
Every gaze traveled toward the door and there stood a gaping young man with shock written over his face.
…..
[A few moments ago]
With a sullen look, Devon followed his sister toward the main hall.
He was in his room, trying to think of a way to escape this cage as soon as he could.
That's when Gabriella came knocking on his door.
"Why the hell is he back?" he muttered under his breath. That loser? The thought alone made his blood boil.
And what was their mother even thinking, calling Hades over? Did she really believe he'd turned into some calamity-class warrior who could actually help them?
Gabriella sighed and shot him a glare. "He's here to help, idiot. Mum invited him herself. So unless you want to embarrass yourself in front of beautiful women, behave."
Devon's mood shifted in an instant. His eyes lit up. "Wait—did you say beautiful women?"
Now, instead of dragging his feet, he strode ahead eagerly, curiosity and excitement written all over his face.
But the moment he stepped into the main hall, he froze.
"W–Wives?!" Devon blurted out, staring at the two stunning women standing beside Hades. "You mean to tell me these two beauties are that knucklehead's wives?!" He looked utterly dumbfounded. The idea that someone like Hades—that Hades—could win over such women was beyond belief.
Count Trevon's brows furrowed in irritation, and Lady Quintessa looked ready to scold her son for his lack of manners—when, unexpectedly, one of the women spoke up.
"You must be the idiot who caused this mess," said the blonde elf, her sharp eyes narrowing at him.
Devon's face turned red in an instant. "Y–You… how dare you call me an idiot?!" he stammered.
Peri simply shrugged, her tone calm but cutting. "Well, you did bring a danger big enough to wipe out your entire bloodline, didn't you? In my eyes, you really are an impulsive idiot."
Devon's eyes widened, and in the next instant, his aura erupted.
The air trembled, the furniture rattled, and the atmosphere grew heavy with his fury—but none in the room, except for Quintessa, even flinched.
Devon clenched his fists, veins bulging on his neck and arms. But before he could take a single step forward, a firm hand landed on his shoulder.
"Enough," Trevon's voice rang out, cold and reproachful.
Devon turned sharply toward his father, disbelief flashing in his eyes. "How can you let an outsider insult me like that, Father? Am I that unimportant to you?!"
Trevon gritted his teeth in frustration. He had just saved his son's life—and the fool didn't even realize it. The moment Devon had released his aura, Trevon had noticed it: the subtle shift in stance from the dragoness and the beast-girl behind the elf. One wrong move, and even Trevon wouldn't have been able to save his son from a swift and brutal end.
Quintessa quickly stepped forward, her tone sharp but composed. "Calm down, Devon, and answer a few questions Hades wants to ask."
"And why should I answer him?!" Devon spat. "Who even is he? Some orphaned asshol—"
BOOOOOOM!
The wooden floor split open with a deafening crack. The roof above trembled as raw, suffocating pressure filled the hall.
It wasn't Devon this time. It was the woman standing quietly in the corner of the reception hall—the violet-haired dragoness.
Averis's aura crashed over the room like a tidal wave. Though her killing intent was aimed solely at the foolish human who had dared to insult her Lord, everyone felt it.
Tia nearly collapsed, her legs giving way as cold sweat streamed down her face.
Quintessa staggered, caught just in time by Gabriella.
Even Trevon's body trembled; every instinct screamed at him to move, to protect his son—but he couldn't.
And Devon…
Devon stood frozen, his body quaking uncontrollably. His face turned ghostly pale, his breathing shallow, his eyes wide with terror. A dark patch spread down his pants as the stench of urine filled the air—proof of the overwhelming fear consuming him.
He had never felt death this close before. Every heartbeat was agony. He didn't dare blink, terrified that if he closed his eyes, his head would already be rolling on the floor when he opened them again.
Hades let out a long sigh. "Averis," he said softly, "that's enough."
The crushing pressure slowly faded, though Averis's violet eyes remained locked on Devon—a silent, unyielding warning to choose his next words very, very carefully.
Hades stepped forward and helped his mother back on her feet, "I am sorry, mother…Averis is a bit impulsive."
Quintessa was too stunned to form any answer at the moment. All she could do right now was to nod.
Hades turned towards the person he once called his father before asking, "Now, if you give me the permission, I would like to ask him a few questions."
Trevon's face was pale but he retained a solemn expression as he nodded in agreement. But, "Let him change his clothes first."
Hades glanced down at Devon and nodded.
Soon, Devon was taken away by Alistair to have his clothes changed
Meanwhile, Hades turned towards Tia and said with a sheepish smile, "Well, let's continue the introduction."
Moving toward Luna he said, "She is Luna whom you previously knew as Rinne. And this is Peri, someone I met and fell in love with a few weeks ago."
Tia was too stunned to properly hear him but she smiled in response, happy to see that Hades still valued her enough to introduce his wives to her.
Just then,
*KNOCK* *KNOCK*
They all heard a loud knocking sound on the door.
Trevon frowned but before he could have told someone to check, a butler rushed in and informed,
"I-It's the Orc Lord…he has appeared at the door."
