Chapter 42: Caught in the Crossfire
Cain could feel cold sweat dripping down his back as he met Anna's glare. He could tell that she was somhow disappointed in him. He had no idea why that would be the case though.
'This Playboy asshole!'
And as per usual when it came to Anna, Gaius was less than worthless. He could sense that one misstep could potentially be dangerous. Just as he was about to speak, the door opened up behind him, revealing Jayden with her hair in a somewhat messy ponytail. However her ears and tails were once again hidden.
The problem though was she hadn't gotten dressed and was still wearing nothing but his shirt and her panties!
A silent look of horror appeared on Cain's face as Jayden gave him a small subtle thumbs up. The small gleam in her eyes gave him the impression that she was trying to tell him that he did a good job and that they were safe now.
'THIS FUCKING IDIOT GIRL!!!!!!!'
It was a miracle in itself that Cain didn't start cussing at Jayden right then and there. Anna's expression went from just plain cold to absolutely chilling.
Cain felt his pulse spike, his brain scrambling for any explanation that wouldn't get him murdered on the spot.
Anna's gaze slowly moved from him to Jayden, lingering just long enough to make the air feel heavy. "...Why," she said evenly, "is she here?"
Cain opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He wasn't sure if his throat had gone dry from panic or if his brain had simply decided to shut down to spare him from further humiliation.
Jayden, blissfully unaware of the noose tightening around his neck, looked impassively at Anna and remarked
"Good Morning Professor. What are you doing here?"
Cain had no idea why what the hell was going on anymore. The two women were smiling at each other but there was no light in either of their gazes. Gaius made a Tch sound, clearly annoyed but made no attempt to explain to Cain what was happening.
Cain's instinct was screaming at him to get out of the room, but his body refused to move. It was as if the tension between Anna and Jayden had locked the air in place, pinning him to the spot.
Anna's lips curved into something that looked like a smile, but Cain was certain it was anything but friendly. "I was looking for Cain," she said slowly, her voice like ice sliding across glass. "I didn't expect to find… company."
Jayden tilted her head slightly, her messy ponytail swaying. "Company? That's one way to put it," she replied, tone casual but eyes sharp.
Cain wanted to tell Jayden to shut up before she made it worse, but he also suspected that anything he said would be taken as an admission of guilt.
Anna stepped closer, her heels clicking softly against the floor. "So, Cain," she began, eyes never leaving his, "how long has this been going on?"
Jayden let out a small laugh, a sound that somehow managed to be both playful and challenging. "That depends," she said, "on what you mean by 'this.'"
Cain's stomach churned. He could almost feel Gaius' silent judgment pressing down on him, like the spirit was watching him dig his own grave and had no intention of stopping it.
Anna's smile didn't falter. "You know exactly what I mean," she said.
Cain realized that if he didn't say something now, he might not live long enough to regret it.
"This....whatever you think this is...It's new. So new that it's news to me."
But fuck it. He had done nothing wrong so why should he be afraid?!
Anna's eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze dissecting every word that had just come out of his mouth. "News to you?" she repeated, voice low and measured. "That's an interesting choice of words."
Her attention flicked between them, the sharpness in her eyes making Cain feel like he was standing in front of an executioner. "So you're telling me," she said slowly, "that she is in your shirt… in your room… first thing in the morning… and you don't know why?"
Cain swallowed hard. When she put it like that, it really did sound bad.
Jayden crossed her arms, a faint smirk tugging at her lips as if she were watching a play unfold for her amusement. "Well, it's true," she said.
"I made the decision yesterday and now he's mine."
She stated it like it was a fact and not the one sided decision made by a clearly musclebrained wolf girl.
Cain shot her a look that screamed for her to stop talking, but Jayden either didn't notice or didn't care.
Anna's eyes shifted to Jayden, and for a brief moment Cain thought the temperature in the room had dropped even further. "Yours?" Anna asked, her tone deceptively calm.
Jayden nodded once, still wearing that self-satisfied smirk. "Yes. Problem?"
Cain's jaw tightened. He could already see where this was heading, and it was nowhere good. "Jayden, that's not what happened," he said quickly, trying to cut her off before she could dig him any deeper.
She glanced at him, her expression full of mock innocence. "What? I'm just telling the truth."
Gaius let out a quiet chuckle that only Cain could hear, a sound dripping with amusement at his predicament.
Anna, however, didn't so much as blink. "Interesting," she murmured, studying Jayden as if she were an unusual specimen she was deciding whether to keep or dispose of. "And Cain? You agree with her… claim?"
"No," Cain said flatly, shaking his head. "Absolutely not. Bobody owns anybody here!"
Jayden turned her gaze to him with shock written all over her impassive face.
However, the shock lasted only a second before her expression hardened into something far more dangerous as her gaze turned back to Anna. "So that's it? You're just going to swoop in and try to take what's mine?"
Cain blinked once. Then twice. His brain stalled, failing to process the words that had just come out of her mouth. What's hers? Was his opinion not worth a damn here? When had his life turned into some kind of territorial dispute?
Anna's brows lifted ever so slightly, her lips curling in a faint, mocking smile. "Oh? And here I thought you said he was yours. Seems like he doesn't quite agree."
Jayden returned the smile with one of her own
"He doesn't have to agree. I've already decided."
Cain stared at her, dumbfounded. That still made no sense to him.
"Yes," Jayden replied firmly, her gaze snapping back to Anna. "And I don't care if you've known him longer. He. Is. Mine."
Cain placed a hand on his forehead as he tried to fight the headache that was coming. Was there going to be a war in his room first thing in the morning?
"Fucking hell...."
