Chapter 41: A Storm is Brewing
Jayden's tail bristled and her ears instantly perked up in full alert as she looked around for a place to hide. She was far more expressive without the hair tie and even though both of them were panicking, Cain was unable to deny that the faces she made were very cute.
However her attempt at hiding was throwing the sheets over her head and pretending she wasn't there. As if whoever was here wouldn't see the massive lump in the middle of the bed.
'Is she dumb?!'
He had no idea how she could think that was a good idea. It was so laughably bad that he wasn't sure if she was being serious or not. The lump under the sheets shifted slightly as her tail betrayed her, twitching back and forth in nervous agitation.
He dragged a hand down his face, trying to piece together how things had spiraled into this. The sound of footsteps outside his bedroom meant that he had little to no time to do anything.
'What are you panicking for? It's my daughter. Though I would like to know why she is visiting you now of all times...'
Cain could feel the suspicion that his mentor had for him. It was his only daughter who was visiting the room of a young man. If it was Gaius in his prime, that was a recipe for disaster....and making more Anna's apparently.
Jayden's breathing was shallow and fast, her tail twitching beneath the sheet as if it had a mind of its own. Cain could almost hear her heart pounding from where he stood. She clutched the blanket tighter over her head, as if that alone would keep her hidden from whoever had entered the dorm.
Cain froze, his mind racing. Anna being here was bad enough, but with Jayden in this state, it was about to get a lot worse. He glanced toward the door, hearing the faint creak of footsteps moving deeper into the dorm. Whoever was here was not leaving anytime soon.
Gaius's voice sounded in his head, dry and unhelpful. You could always explain that you just happen to keep strange women under your sheets for emergencies.
Cain ignored him. His focus was on Jayden, who was trembling and trying not to make a sound. Her ears were flattened now, but every so often they twitched in the direction of the noises outside the bedroom.
He took a step closer to the bed, crouching so his voice would carry only to her. "Stay still. Do not make a sound. I will deal with it."
Jayden gave the smallest of nods from under the blanket. Her tail stilled, though the tension in her body did not ease.
The footsteps drew closer, and then a quiet knock sounded on the bedroom door.
"Cain?" Anna's voice carried a note of suspicion.
Cain straightened, pulling in a slow breath before answering. "Yeah?"
"I came to talk to you. Can I come in?"
Cain's eyes flicked to the bed. This was going to be a problem.
"Uhh. Yeah.. Just give me a second."
"It's pretty urgent, I am opening the door."
Cain's stomach sank. "Wait—"
The door handle turned.
He moved in two quick strides, planting himself in front of the bed just as the door opened. Anna stepped inside, her eyes scanning the room before settling on him. However, as soon as she saw how he was dressed, she immediately averted her gaze and closed the door.
"Why the hell aren't you dressed yet?! Pervert!"
Cain blinked, caught completely off guard by her reaction. "What? I just woke up!"
Anna's voice came muffled through the closed door. "That is not an excuse! At least have the decency to put a shirt on before answering the door!"
From under the sheets, Jayden shifted, the fabric rustling softly. Cain shot a glare in her direction, silently begging her not to move. Her tail twitched again, and he could almost hear her nodding her head meekly. She had almost been caught.
However, Cain was also equally annoyed that Jayden had somehow stripped him down to boxers since he passed out. Judging by the fact that the sun was high in the sky, he had been unconscious for almost a day.
Gaius's voice rumbled in the back of his mind, heavy with mock amusement.'You should count yourself lucky. In my day, waking up to find a woman in your bed was considered a victory.'
Cain kept his face blank, though he wanted to snap back. This was not a victory. This was a disaster in progress.
Anna's voice came again from the other side of the door. "Cain, hurry up. I am not standing out here all day."
Cain took a deep breath and glanced once more at the bed. Jayden's tail still twitched beneath the sheets, betraying her agitation He shook his head slightly, then moved toward the door.
He pulled it open just enough to peek out and called back, "Give me a minute. I'm coming."
Anna's footsteps stopped, and her voice softened. "You better be quick."
Cain closed the door gently behind him and turned back to the room. He had to act fast before Jayden's secret was exposed.
He quickly grabbed some pants and a shirt, quickly throwing them on as his eyes flicked to the bed one final time, where the lump remained mostly still now.
"Stay quiet," he whispered, crouching beside her. "I'm going to get us both out of this."
Jayden's eyes met his for a brief moment, wide and anxious. She nodded slightly, clutching the blanket tighter as he left the room.
He quickly opened the door and closed it gingerly behind him. Anna was waiting outside, tapping her foot as she glanced at her watch. Clearly whatever it was had agitated her and the faint signs of a blush showed that she was also embarrassed at seeing him practically naked. '
'You defiled the eyes of a precious maiden by exposing your body. It is only right that you gouge out your eyes for your sins!
Cain ignored Gaius' words. Since learning he was a father, it was becoming evident that he was the most annoying type to deal with.
"What's up? Why are you looking for me now of all times?"
Cain rubbed his forehead, trying to focus despite the chaos in his mind. "What's so urgent that you're showing up here unannounced?"
Anna's eyes narrowed as she folded her arms. "Abel just sent word. He requested to move the duel date up. Instead of next week, it's now in three days.
Cain's eyes lit up the moment Anna mentioned the duel being moved up. "Three days? Perfect."
Anna raised an eyebrow. "You're not worried about the shorter time?"
Cain shook his head with a grin. "No way. That means I don't have to wait a whole week to take care of that traitorous bastard."
His fists clenched at the thought of Abel, a rush of adrenaline flooding through him. "I've been ready for this for a long time. The sooner, the better."
Anna let out a small laugh, surprised at his excitement. "You really hate the guy that much?"
"More than that," Cain said firmly. "He broke my trust and betrayed me. I will not allow myself to be stabbed in the back by him again."
Anna slowly nodded her head in approval.
"That does make sense I guess...." she remarked. Cain thought he was in the clear at that moment but he quickly found out he was dead wrong.
"Speaking of betrayal...Who is the woman in your bed at the moment Cain?"
The coldness of her voice sent a shiver down his spine as only one word slipped out of Cain's mouth.
"Fuck."
She had noticed.
