Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Pokémon Tower, Trickster Ghost Pokémon
"Woof!" Growlithe barked loudly, its senses heightened as it picked up an unusual aura in the air.
Although Growlithe couldn't see the presence, it could certainly sense something eerie.
"It seems that the legends about dogs being able to detect unclean things are true. Even if they can't see them, they can sense their aura," Gary thought to himself, impressed by his Pokémon's keen instincts.
Suddenly, the tableware on the long dining table floated up into the air without any visible cause.
"Woof! Woof!" Growlithe barked even louder, sensing the ghostly presence growing stronger.
"Use Odor Sleuth," Gary quickly ordered.
"Woof!" Growlithe complied, lowering its head to activate the special ability. In an instant, three dark figures appeared in the room—Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar.
LV20 Gastly♂/Gym
LV30 Haunter♂/Gym
LV49 Gengar♂/Gym
Gary was surprised to see the three ghostly figures, especially since all of them had gym-level potential. This meant they were exceptionally strong Pokémon.
The presence of Gengar, in particular, intrigued him. It suggested that Gengar had a Trainer. In order to evolve from Haunter to Gengar, a special exchange was required to trigger its evolution. This implied that Gengar might be linked to a Trainer, rather than simply existing as a wild Pokémon.
"Gaah!" Gengar let out a startled cry as it realized that it had been exposed. It could no longer conceal its form. However, instead of being alarmed, the ghost trio simply appeared amused.
"Shhh...!" Haunter chimed in, and Gastly emitted a series of bubbly giggles.
Despite their intimidating appearance, the three Ghost Pokémon didn't seem interested in attacking. They were just... having fun.
"Woof! Woof!" Growlithe barked, still standing guard in front of Gary, unsure what to make of the situation.
The three Ghost Pokémon continued their antics, pulling faces and making strange, exaggerated expressions at Growlithe. It was as if they were performing a goofy comedy show.
"What's going on here?" Growlithe looked puzzled, unable to figure out their strange behavior.
Then, to Gary's surprise, applause sounded from around the room.
Clap! Clap! Clap...
The three ghosts froze and stared at Gary, who was clapping enthusiastically.
"Not bad. Your comedy performance is very innovative," Gary praised them, impressed by the ghosts' antics.
Gengar, Haunter, and Gastly blinked, confused at first, then their expressions shifted to surprise. It had been a long time since anyone had acknowledged their humor.
"Gaah!" Gengar beamed with pride, clearly pleased by Gary's praise.
For years, they had tried to entertain the residents of Lavender Town, but their eerie performances were met with fear rather than laughter. It was rare for them to find someone who appreciated their attempts at humor.
Growlithe, still puzzled by their antics, relaxed slightly, but it was evident that the Ghost Pokémon weren't dangerous.
"Woof?" Growlithe tilted its head, still unsure of what to make of the situation.
Gengar, thrilled by the recognition, and Haunter and Gastly joined in, even more excited than before. They began performing even wilder, sillier facial expressions and poses.
Gary couldn't help but laugh. "You guys are really something. You're pretty funny."
The ghost trio continued their performances, not at all dissuaded by the fact that their humor was more strange than skillful. It was the effort that counted, and they were putting on a show just for him.
Gary kept chuckling, enjoying the unexpected show. "You know, I have a friend who doesn't laugh much. I think if you perform in front of her, you'll definitely make her laugh."
Gengar, Haunter, and Gastly looked at each other in surprise. "Gengga!" Gengar asked, intrigued. "Someone who doesn't laugh?"
"Yes," Gary nodded. "I think if you perform for her, she'll definitely crack a smile. If you can make her laugh, I'll even call you the strongest comedy masters in the Pokémon world."
The ghost trio's eyes lit up. The prospect of earning such a title was enough to spark their interest.
"Sssss!" Haunter hummed eagerly.
"Gasss!" Gastly chimed in, excited by the idea of a challenge.
Gengar clapped its hands, signaling that they were ready to perform for Gary's friend. "Where is this friend? Take us there!"
Gary chuckled at their enthusiasm. "Well, my friend is in Saffron City, but she's a busy person. It'll be hard to bring her here. But how about this: I'll take you there instead. You can perform for her when we arrive."
The trio hesitated at first. They lived in the Pokémon Tower, after all, and had never traveled far from their home. The idea of leaving the tower was a bit daunting, but when they heard that Saffron City had a large stage, they perked up.
"A big stage?" Gengar repeated, clearly excited.
"Yes," Gary affirmed, "Saffron City has an international stage where you can perform in front of a large audience."
"Sssss!" Haunter agreed enthusiastically.
"Okay, it's a deal!" Gengar declared, and the trio agreed without hesitation. They were ready to take their show on the road.
Gary smiled. "Great! You won't regret it."
He didn't want to capture them because their passion for performance was genuine. They weren't fighters—they were entertainers. And capturing them just to train them wouldn't be fair. They didn't want to battle; they wanted to bring joy through comedy.
This was a rare case where Gary realized that sometimes, Pokémon were not driven by the usual desire to battle but by their personal dreams. Just like Ash, who respected his Pokémon's wishes, Gary wasn't going to force the Ghost Pokémon into battle if they didn't want to fight.
Gary had promised them a stage, and he would ensure they got one. He had already arranged for Najun to help, and there was a Psychic School in the Saffron Gym with plenty of students who could appreciate their unique brand of humor. It would be a perfect place for their comedy debut.
The trio of Ghost Pokémon, now more excited than ever, agreed to join Gary in his journey to Saffron City.
Gary, his Pokémon, and the ghostly trio spent the night at the Pokémon Tower, laughing and enjoying the impromptu comedy show. As they performed, Gary shared snacks and energy cubes with everyone. It wasn't the typical night of ghostly terror that people expected from Lavender Town—it was a night filled with fun and laughter.
As for anyone who might pass by, they would certainly think that the Pokémon Tower was haunted. But for the residents of Lavender Town, it was just another ordinary night... albeit with a much more cheerful atmosphere than usual.
