Jiro Miyamoto's intervention caught Mary and her team completely off guard.
In truth, Rhodes had taken precautions by planting some of his own people among the participants in the St. Louis Pokémon competition.
Unfortunately, none of the ship guards Rhodes had sent were skilled enough to make it to the finals.
Instead, a wildcard competitor managed to secure a spot—and that competitor was none other than Jiro Miyamoto.
Jiro Miyamoto was a Team Rocket member, holding the rank of Squad Leader.
His presence on the St. Louis was purely coincidental, as he was on vacation and had planned a trip to the Hoenn region.
When he decided to join the St. Louis Pokémon competition, it was simply for fun and to train his Pokémon.
After a series of intense battles, he successfully made it to the finals.
At that point, Rhodes, the chief sailor of the St. Louis, approached him. Jiro Miyamoto had already revealed his Team Rocket affiliation to Rhodes while boarding the ship, so Rhodes knew who he was dealing with.
To prepare for any unexpected incidents, Rhodes promised Jiro Miyamoto significant rewards, requesting his help in case anything went wrong during the awards ceremony.
Now, Rhodes' foresight had paid off. Jiro Miyamoto's hidden role had successfully turned the tide of a dire situation.
With Alakazam incapacitated and Sneasel subdued by Muk, Shuuji Ikeda and Shu Yamato's ambush was a failure.
Their faces turned pale, and they quickly retreated, abandoning their Pokémon temporarily in a desperate attempt to save their own lives.
The two of them hastily grabbed PokéBalls from their belts.
Jiro Miyamoto, however, was not about to let them escape so easily. With a subtle glance at Gengar and Muk, the two Pokémon understood his intent instantly.
Gengar fired another Shadow Ball, while Muk launched a Sludge Bomb at the fleeing trainers without hesitation.
Shuuji Ikeda and Shu Yamato's quick reactions saved them. Before the attacks landed, they managed to release the Pokémon inside their PokéBalls.
Because they hadn't had time to heal their main Pokémon after previous battles, both trainers were forced to rely on less powerful options.
Shuuji Ikeda sent out an Ursaring, while Shu Yamato released a Mr. Mime.
Ursaring, being a Normal-type, had a significant advantage against Gengar's Shadow Ball. It stepped forward and shielded Shuuji Ikeda, successfully blocking the attack.
As for Mr. Mime, it deployed its signature technique. Rapidly moving its hands through the air, it erected an invisible barrier that completely nullified Muk's Sludge Bomb.
Seeing their ambush fail, Mary and Hector's expressions darkened.
Just as they were about to focus on deploying additional Pokémon to deal with the captain, several ship guards emerged from hidden passageways and began surrounding them.
The St. Louis was the captain's stronghold, and with their ambush thwarted, Mary and her team now faced the very real danger of being outnumbered.
"Well done! You filthy rats won't escape today! Take them down on the spot!"
Having narrowly escaped death, the old captain was seething with rage. He immediately released an aging Poliwrath and barked orders to his crew.
"Plan B. Execute immediately."
Hector and Mary exchanged a glance before recalling their Sceptile and Poliwrath back to their sides. Hector then spoke into a communicator in his hand.
A series of affirming voices echoed from the small device in Hector's ear.
The moment Hector issued his command, an Kadabra emerged from its PokéBall. With a flash of blue light in its eyes, both trainers and their Pokémon vanished alongside it in an instant.
Meanwhile, Shuuji Ikeda and Shu Yamato had successfully blended into the crowd, recalling their Pokémon amidst the chaos.
The ship guards who had emerged from the hidden doors hesitated to act, fearing harm to the passengers.
Less than a minute later, the previously quiet explosions resumed, one after another, causing the ship to tremble violently once more.
At the same time, as Hector and his team were attempting to ambush the captain, Mary's and Hector's subordinates were ransacking the captain's quarters.
Despite turning the room upside down, they found nothing but some valuables. The mission objective remained nowhere in sight.
"Reporting in, sir. The target isn't in the captain's quarters. It's highly likely to be on the captain himself."
The lead subordinate, frustrated by their fruitless search, pulled out a compact communicator and reported the situation.
"All units regroup on the deck. Those exposed, hide and await further instructions. Those still undercover, blend into the crowd and get close to the old man. The item must be retrieved at all costs."
Hector's orders came through clearly, relayed to every operative via their communicators.
With the guards emerging from hidden doors, some of the secret passageways leading directly to the deck were revealed to the passengers.
The bottleneck at the main entrances quickly dissipated as people spread out toward these newly discovered exits.
The guards didn't stop the passengers from using these passages.
Sato joined the evacuation, choosing a main exit instead of the cramped hidden doors.
With many passengers diverted, the main corridor was surprisingly less crowded.
Though the ship continued to shake, Sato smoothly made his way through the passage, aided by his Golbat, which helped him hover at a low altitude for a faster escape.
"Damn it! The path ahead is on fire—cough, cough!"
Sato followed the directional signs but soon encountered a blockage. A group of people stood in the way, shouting in panic.
Due to the multiple explosions, fires had broken out in several areas of the ship, spreading rapidly.
The flames had now engulfed the portion of the exit corridor leading to the deck. Any attempt to move forward risked severe burns or suffocation from the thick smoke.
Several Trainers sent out their Water-type Pokémon to extinguish the flames, but the intensity of the fire was too overwhelming for the limited number of Pokémon to handle.
"It looks like I'll have to take a chance and push through. If the fire spreads further, there'll be no way out."
Seeing the stalled crowd ahead, Sato grew anxious. He retrieved the PokéBalls containing his Mudkip and Shiny Wingull, preparing for a risky advance.
Fortunately, just as the situation seemed dire and Sato was about to force his way through the fire, the old captain and Rhodes arrived with a group of ship guards, appearing like saviors.
