Under the impact of the flames, Pikachu was unable to land its Iron Tail on Charmeleon as intended. Instead, it was forced back by the fiery onslaught.
"Charmeleon, advance with Slash, then follow up with Flamethrower!"
Seizing the opportunity, Tyson directed Charmeleon to launch a counterattack.
Even if physical contact would trigger Pikachu's Static ability, Tyson wasn't about to let this perfect opening slip away.
"Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!"
Although Rina reacted quickly, the close distance left Pikachu vulnerable. Before it could fully charge its attack, Charmeleon's Slash struck it directly, leaving three crimson claw marks on its back.
Flamethrower followed immediately, searing Pikachu's wounds. The flames stopped the bleeding but caused excruciating pain.
As Pikachu cried out in agony, Charmeleon pressed on under Tyson's commands. Another burst of Flamethrower sent Pikachu flying before it collapsed to the ground.
Struggling to rise, Pikachu's determined gaze locked onto the flames rushing toward it.
"Pi-ka-chu!"
With a defiant cry, Pikachu unleashed its final attack, a massive surge of electricity that disrupted Charmeleon's Flamethrower. But it wasn't enough—Pikachu fell unconscious as the flames dissipated.
"That was an incredible battle. I hope we have the chance to face each other again."
After the match, Tyson approached Rina. It was rare for him to engage with his opponents, but her unwavering fighting spirit, mirrored by Pikachu's determination, left an impression.
"Thanks. You and Charmeleon are really strong," Rina replied. "Neither Pikachu nor I could find an opening to turn things around, but I won't give up. Next time, I'll win!"
She clenched her small fists as if rallying her own spirits.
"Take care of Pikachu first. I'm sure we'll meet again," Tyson said with a nod.
"Will do. See you around!"
Rina quickly recovered her composure and left to heal Pikachu, her energy undiminished despite the loss.
Tyson returned to the Pokémon Center to rest, preparing for the increasingly challenging battles ahead. His next opponent could only be tougher.
But as the afternoon matchups were announced, a murmur spread through the Crowd—Tyson's opponent was an Elite Trainer. While others sighed in relief at avoiding such a draw, Tyson's resolve only hardened.
Arriving at the battlefield, Tyson could hear whispers about how quickly he'd be eliminated. Though annoyed, the chatter fueled his competitive spirit. Even if victory seemed impossible, he was determined to leave his mark.
"Let's give it everything, Charmeleon!" Tyson encouraged. His partner roared in response, its fiery determination flaring to match its trainer's.
Across the field, the Elite Trainer, Caden, released Infernape.
"Charmeleon, Flamethrower!"
"Infernape, Cross Chop!"
The blazing flames erupted from Charmeleon, but Infernape surged forward with incredible speed, slicing through the attack with a powerful Cross Chop.
"Charmeleon, fall back and use Dragon Breath to disrupt its movements!"
Charmeleon unleashed a stream of green energy, but Infernape countered effortlessly with Brick Break, cutting through the attack as it closed the distance.
"Charmeleon, follow up with Slash!"
As the two Pokémon clashed in close quarters, Charmeleon landed a glancing hit on Infernape. However, Infernape retaliated with Brick Break, forcing Charmeleon back.
"Infernape, Cross Chop again!"
"Charmeleon, use Dragon Breath point-blank!"
The two attacks collided, with Dragon Breath managing to momentarily slow Infernape's assault. But the Elite Trainer's Pokémon quickly broke through, delivering a devastating blow with Cross Chop that knocked Charmeleon back.
"Charmeleon, Flamethrower—don't give up!"
Despite the pain, Charmeleon roared and unleashed a searing Flamethrower. At such close range, Infernape couldn't dodge and was enveloped in flames. However, it recovered quickly, countering with another Cross Chop that ended the battle.
Charmeleon collapsed, defeated but unbroken in spirit.
"You did amazing, Charmeleon. Rest now," Tyson said, recalling his partner into its Poké Ball.
Charmeleon's performance left even the Elite Trainer impressed, as evidenced by the scorched fur and numerous scars on Infernape's body.
Without lingering, Tyson hurried to the Pokémon Center to heal Charmeleon.
Though the system declared his challenge complete and marked his defeat, Tyson was already looking ahead. This battle had only strengthened his resolve to improve and face stronger opponents in the future.
