Chapter 49: Chapter 49 - Training with Jonathan
After lunch and dessert, they and their teams went back to the inn to rest for a few hours and so Jonathan could continue his work while Rico was resting in his room.
Later, at 3 in the afternoon, Rico, Jonathan, and their teams went to the fields outside of town to do some training so Rico would be prepared for the gym battle with Kale by tomorrow morning. They were not too far from the town and there is a nearby house. At the fields, Rico's Piplup was training its Water Gun and Bubble against a tree so it would be more resistant against Kale's Fire-type Pokémon.
"The Pokémon gym at Labuyo Town is a Fire-type gym so you will need to work on your Water-type Pokémon," Jonathan said to Rico with a little bit of emphasis.
"Got it, big bro," Rico responded back positively with a little bit of determination. Then to Piplup, "Piplup, again use Water Gun!"
Piplup then used Water Gun on the tree again, this time it's slightly stronger than last time. But still, Piplup and Rico are still far from their ultimate goal.
"Good, good," Jonathan evaluated their progress. "But still, we have a long way to go."
"I know," replied Rico back. "It wasn't easy."
At this point, Jonathan had decided to use his experience with Greninja in order to help out his younger brother.
Later, at 4:01 p.m., after some more training, Rico wiped the sweat off his forehead with his towel in mild exhaustion. Jonathan and his Greninja are sitting on a fallen log while observing Rico's training with Piplup. After wiping his sweat, Rico walked up to Jonathan and asked, "Hey, big brother, did you ever travel across the whole region?"
"Oh, yes, I did," Jonathan answered back.
"Oh, okay then."
"But never been outside of Philas."
"What? Really?"
Jonathan then smiled. "Yes, imagine if we move out to another region like Kanto."
"I would never move out!"
Jonathan then laughed. "Yeah, you're right."
But, this what-if scenario from Jonathan will be come true in the near future.
Later, at 5:44 p.m., they and their teams went back to the inn to rest up and take a bath at the bathhouse. After taking a bath and changed their clothing, they went to the inn's restaurant to eat a hearty meal. Their meal for dinner is Tamato Berry Stew, Mashed Potatoes, and Vegetable Salad. Water is their beverage. Their Pokémon are eating their special food nearby. At this time, the restaurant was quiet and only had a few people eating and drinking. Although the stew was spicy, both Rico and Jonathan are used to it, as if they loved spicy foods.
As they eat and drink, Jonathan asked Rico if he was ready to take on the Fire-type gym.
"Um…I'll do my best," Rico replied back a bit slowly, "even if I could lose."
"Okay, that's good," Jonathan responded with a little bit of positive optimism.
At the same time, Rico decided to keep his reunion with Jonathan a secret from his parents, fearing that they may freak out if they find it out.
Back at his room, while Jonathan was working, Rico was writing about his day in his journal in detail. His Pokémon team was watching his literary work.
"Man, my life seems to be lucky," Rico said to them while writing his journal entry.
Riolu then responded in asking.
Rico then looked at his team and smiled. "Yeah, it is, Riolu."
Riolu then responded back with a smile.
Absol then responded in asking.
"Well, I don't know, Absol," Rico replied back while thinking, "it depends with the gym leader's Pokémon and the number of it, not to mention their strength as well. But, we'll just do our best."
Then, suddenly, a phone call came. Rico then picked it up and answered the call, "Hello, dad?"
"Hi, son, how are you?" Lucas responded back while sitting on his bed. "Where are you now?"
"Um, in Labuyo Town."
"Wow, that town was famous for its Tamato Berries and jalapenos. Are you there for your next gym badge?"
"Yes, but the gym was currently closed."
"Ah, I see. Just be patient, son. You don't have to rush."
"I know, I know. I'll wait."
"Okay then. How's your day? Did you enjoy the festival?"
"Yes, I did. It was so much fun. By the way, I bought some souvenirs as well."
"Nice one, Rico. Make sure you send it home, okay?"
"Okay, dad, I will, after I buy some t-shirts as well."
"Alright, use your money wisely, okay?"
"I will. Good night."
"Good night and be safe out there."
He and Lucas then ended their conversation.
