Chapter 47: Chapter 47 - A Battle Between Brothers
The next morning, at the inn's restaurant, Rico and Jonathan are having breakfast. Their breakfast is spicy noodles. Their Pokémon are eating their special food nearby.
"Wow, you have that much Pokémon," Jonathan commented to Rico. "Is that during your journey?"
"No, that was before my journey," Rico answered back positively.
"Woah, that was a lot. You must be very lucky."
"Yeah, you're right. Riolu is my first Pokémon."
The last sentence caused Jonathan to be mildly shocked.
"What? Your first Pokémon? I thought Piplup is your first Pokémon."
"Nope, Riolu is my first Pokémon," Rico responded with a smile.
"Okay then," Jonathan replied while calming down. "How?"
Rico then told him his backstory on how he met Riolu in the first place, in every detail.
His story surprised Jonathan a lot, and Rico concluded, "Yeah, and we became best friends after my first Pokémon battle."
"I see," Jonathan responded. "With who?"
"Of course with those Pokémon Pinchers," Rico retorted back.
"Wow, it must have been hard."
"I was panicking at first, but when I remembered my memorizations of Pokémon moves the night before, I became serious."
"How can you memorize Pokémon moves? What did you use?"
"I used a book about Pokémon moves."
"Oh, that's why."
This follows with a short silence.
"Wow, big brother," Rico said breaking the silence, "Your Greninja is so awesome."
"Yes, in fact," Jonathan replied back positively, "it's my first Pokémon."
"Ah, I see. Did you go on a journey?"
"Yes, I did. What's your reason to go on a journey?"
"Well, it's Ash who is the reason and inspiration for me to go on a journey and participate in the Philas League."
Puzzled by the first part of Rico's sentence, Jonathan asked, "Ash? Who's that?"
"He's the champion of the Orange Islands, Alola, and Galar. Don't you know that?"
"Sorry, Rico, I didn't watch championships very often."
"I do, and I was inspired by him."
Later, at a farm adjacent to the inn, Rico and Jonathan are having a Pokémon battle; their Pokémon are Riolu and Greninja. Jonathan had decided to test Rico's strength and skills as a Pokémon Trainer. The innkeeper was watching their battle.
"Let's see your strength, Rico," Jonathan said to Rico in cool seriousness. Greninja then responded with seriousness.
"Okay then," Rico agreed with him with positive confidence. "We'll do our best." Riolu then responded with confident seriousness.
Rico then pulled out his Pokédex and pointed it towards Greninja; his Pokédex then responded, "Greninja, the Ninja Pokémon, and the final evolved form of Froakie. A Water and Dark-type. It creates throwing stars out of compressed water. When it spins them and throws them at high speed, these stars can split metal in two."
"What the…? That was so cool," Rico commented. He then put his Pokédex back in his pants pocket and focused back at the battle.
The battle had begun.
"Riolu, use Focus Blast!" Rico commanded Riolu in seriousness.
Riolu then used Focus Blast, heightening its mental focus and unleashes its power.
"Greninja, dodge it!" Jonathan commanded Greninja quickly and seriously.
Greninja then dodged Riolu's attack, and Jonathan commanded it, "Then use Water Shuriken!"
Greninja then used Water Shuriken, forming a shuriken of water in its hand. It then tosses the shuriken at Riolu.
"Riolu, watch out!" Rico commanded immediately.
But Riolu didn't notice that, and got struck, weakening it to the ground severely.
"Are you alright?" Rico asked it.
Riolu then responded weakly while struggling to get up. It then managed to get up and stand seriously.
"Your Riolu seems to be weaker than my Greninja," Jonathan commented this. "I can tell that you're still a beginner despite having many Pokémon."
"It's alright," Rico responded back without any contempt. "I don't care if I lose against you, as long as I enjoy this battle."
"Wow, that was so strange of you."
They then focused back to the battle.
"Riolu, quickly, use Quick Attack!" Rico commanded Riolu in serious coolness.
Riolu then used Quick Attack, charging at Greninja at a fast pace.
"Then use Karate Chop!" Rico commanded.
But, Jonathan quickly commanded Greninja, "Dodge it!"
Greninja then dodged Riolu's attack, and Jonathan commanded, "Then use Water Pulse!"
Greninja then used Water Pulse, attacking Riolu with a pulsing blast of water, striking it with power. Riolu then collapsed to the ground.
The innkeeper, his Pokémon, and Rico's and Jonathan's Pokémon are watching this with mild awe.
"Wow, it seems that Jonathan had a lot of experience than his younger brother," the innkeeper commented.
Back at the battle, Riolu once again managed to get up and stand with pain.
"Quickly, Riolu, again, use Focus Blast!" Rico commanded.
Riolu then used Focus Blast, heightening its mental focus and unleashes its power, striking Greninja with minimum power. But, this didn't cause Greninja to collapse to the ground, and it felt a mild pain.
Rico and Riolu are stunned at this.
"Me and Greninja did a lot of training," Jonathan said to Rico with positive coolness, "so we are stronger."
"I see then," Rico responded back normally. "It's alright, I will learn from my mistakes."
"Okay then." Then to Greninja, "Greninja, use Hydro Pump!"
"What?" Rico responded to this in surprised stunning.
Greninja then used Hydro Pump, blasting a huge volume of water at Riolu, striking Riolu with such power. As a result, Riolu got defeated by it, ending the battle. Rico had lost against Jonathan, his older brother.
But to that, Rico didn't do anything back in contempt towards Jonathan, and just called back his Riolu while saying, "Thanks, Riolu, you did your best. You deserved some rest."
He then looked at Jonathan and said with confident positivity, "Like I said before, we did our best."
Surprised by his younger brother's calm and confident attitude, Jonathan responded back, "Wow, you're so calm."
"Yeah!" Rico responded back with a smile. "Someday, I'll win against you."
"Okay, I promise," Jonathan promised in response.
