Chapter 23: Chapter 23: League Intel Gathered from Team Rocket
Sabrina shook her head after hearing what Maki had to say.
"It's not about the duties at the gym, but something related to the League—and also to Team Rocket."
Maki frowned at her words. The fact that this involved both the League and Team Rocket simultaneously was unsettling. Though he didn't know the specifics, he had a bad feeling that it couldn't be anything good.
"Let's head to my room first."
Without giving Maki the chance to refuse, Sabrina grabbed him and teleported away.
Compared to the area in the gym reserved for welcoming challengers, Sabrina's room felt slightly more like a girl's living space. However, its overall style leaned toward something reminiscent of the 20th century—a mix of retro with a touch of modern nostalgia.
Maki wasn't exactly an expert in interior design, so this was the best evaluation he could come up with.
He didn't stand on ceremony either. He pulled out the only chair in the room and sat down. Meanwhile, Sabrina crossed her legs and sat on her bed.
"Sabrina, your psychic abilities have grown even stronger!"
After not seeing her abilities in action for a long time, Maki couldn't help but express his amazement. He had thought about trying to learn a thing or two from Sabrina. After all, having psychic powers—even if it didn't allow for teleportation like hers—would be incredibly useful in battle, especially if it allowed for telepathic communication with Pokémon.
It was common knowledge that during battles at the level of Elite Four trainers, direct verbal commands from the trainer became increasingly rare. Trainers only spoke during the most critical moments to dictate the overall direction of the battle.
Most decisions were left to the Pokémon's own judgment.
As Pokémon grew stronger, the trainers often struggled to keep up with the intensity of the battles. Even issuing commands could become difficult—after all, even sound takes time to travel.
But with telepathy, things could be vastly different. Trainers would be able to provide real-time commands to their Pokémon, greatly influencing the battle. It was like having a super-powerful buff.
Unfortunately, Maki didn't seem to have the aptitude for it. Despite spending years practicing the psychic training techniques Sabrina had given him—her family's secret method—he was still far from being able to bend even a spoon.
Of course, that didn't mean he had given up. The meditation technique Sabrina had shared was a treasured family secret, something she hadn't even disclosed to her father, Anders.
Hearing Maki's praise, a rare smile appeared on Sabrina's face.
Compliments were something she often heard from others, but only two people's praise brought her genuine joy.
One was Giovanni. The other was, of course, Maki.
Her feelings toward Giovanni were undoubtedly admiration. After all, he was a man whose charisma was off the charts.
"Let's talk about what's going on in Saffron City. My father hasn't told me anything about it."
Maki leaned back in the chair and sighed.
Sabrina nodded, letting her smile fade as she returned to her usual calm expression.
"Saffron City has always been one of Team Rocket's most important bases of operations. But recently, due to demands from other regions, some of our personnel were reassigned elsewhere. This gave certain individuals an opportunity to make their move."
"People from the League?"
Maki raised an eyebrow. It didn't seem like Giovanni would be careless enough to let something like this happen. Besides, with Sabrina and Anders stationed in Saffron City, the city was well-protected. Although Anders officially wasn't part of Team Rocket, he was effectively one of their operatives, serving as a key piece they had planted within the League.
If the League were making moves, Giovanni wouldn't have been caught off guard.
"No," Sabrina replied, shaking her head.
"Someone tried to interfere with the city's underground operations while Team Rocket's attention was elsewhere. It was a foolhardy attempt—a blatant act of overestimating oneself."
Her tone was icy as she pronounced the intruder's fate.
And rightly so. Everyone knew that Team Rocket was the undisputed king of the underground in both the Kanto and Johto regions.
Even compared to the underworld forces in other regions, Team Rocket was arguably the strongest.
Challenging them here was like choosing the hardest difficulty setting from the start. Maki couldn't help but silently applaud the guts of whoever had tried.
"If that's the case, Team Rocket should have no trouble dealing with them, right?"
The Kanto and Johto regions were vast, and it wasn't uncommon for bold individuals to challenge Team Rocket's authority. The outcome was always the same, though—Maki could only say some of these people might need to go back and relearn elementary school lessons in their next life.
"Of course, dealing with them wouldn't be difficult. Apollo and the others could easily handle it."
Sabrina wasn't exaggerating. Apollo and Athena, with their strength, could easily rival Elite Four-level trainers in most regions.
Kanto was an exception, with monsters like Agatha and Lorelei. Without Giovanni's leadership, it would've been impossible for Team Rocket to thrive in such an environment.
"But the problem is that the opposing leader is no pushover. Based on the League's intel, they're on par with an Elite Four-level trainer. I wouldn't stand a chance against them in a direct confrontation."
Sabrina's current strength barely reached the Ultra Ball level, and even that was with some padding.
In battles, she could use her psychic abilities to amplify her Pokémon's strength artificially. Without that, she wouldn't have even reached the Ultra Ball level.
As she spoke, Sabrina teleported a tablet-like device into her hands and handed it to Maki. It contained information about the individual they were discussing.
"Intel from the League?"
"No, it's from Giovanni."
"Huh?"
"The intel came from one of our spies within the League. Their official notification should arrive in about two days since I'm currently acting as a Gym Leader."
"..."
Maki was speechless. While he knew Team Rocket excelled at planting spies, this was ridiculous.
Here Sabrina was, the acting Gym Leader under the League's jurisdiction, yet she received news about an incident from Team Rocket before the League itself.
Wasn't this some kind of betrayal?
The absurdity of the situation left Maki momentarily stunned.
"What are you looking at me for? You should know the inner workings of Team Rocket better than I do."
"I'm not officially part of Team Rocket, so none of this falls under my responsibility!"
Maki shrugged. Although he and Silver were technically the heirs of Team Rocket, they had no special privileges. Giovanni never mentioned these matters, and Maki didn't bother asking.
As for Silver, he had just run away a few days ago. By now, he was probably wandering around Johto, doing his own thing.
