Chapter 107: The Agent as a Security Guard and the Voodoo Gang_3
Just resurrected, the Mongolian Toplaner shook his head, "Grabbing them back to plant cotton wouldn't even get us a hundred draws."
A hundred draws would be something only for the old Africa hands, under the black flag, coming to North America through the triangular trade route.
The Haitians now, naturally, wouldn't cut it.
"What do you know?" Sword Saint sneered at the Mongolian Toplaner's shortsightedness.
"These guys have been here for so many years, don't you think they'd know the way into Dog Town? You follow me, guaranteed to complete the mission and rake in heaps of profits, alright."
"Ah, right, right, right. Last time you said the same thing, and ended up getting crushed by the subway as soon as you stepped out. We couldn't even find your body, the meat was too pulverized to pick up."
When the Mongolian Toplaner brought up the past, Sword Saint was a bit put off, as the two seemed ready to argue. Brother Ni and the seductive woman each covered their mouths with a hand and gestured for silence, pointing ahead.
There's a faint whisper in the depths of the tunnel, unintelligible in meaning.
Experience from old stealth players definitely outdo the half-witted newbies, otherwise Sword Saint wouldn't have teamed up with them.
The four cautiously move forward, as quietly as mice actually living in the sewers, inching closer to the source of the sound.
But it's incredibly dark here, and to avoid discovery, they had to turn off their headlamps and proceed in pitch black.
However, reaching the end of the pipeline, there's a wasteland ahead, and the sound seems to be coming from beyond the ruins.
Vaguely heard, difficult to make out clearly.
"%@〃々&...those network surveillance guys really never give up, staring at us every day, don't they have anything else to do?"
The speaker's accent is quite thick, even with subtitles translating it, the eavesdropping players struggle to understand.
Another person responds, "It's just something to grow accustomed to, they've been chasing us for years now, and our encounters over the years have cost both them and us quite a number of people, but I can feel we are getting closer to the godly world. Sooner or later, the divine will pierce through the veil and lead us into living in the divine country."
Network surveillance...
The divine...
The veil...
The two's superstitious dialogue left the players bewildered.
Aren't they supposed to be in a sci-fi world setting? How did all this talk about gods and spirits come into play?
The conversation on the other side of the ruins continues...
"Do you think those true gods are as great as the Sea God? If they were so powerful, how could a wall keep them out? I've heard Huang Ban, and Militech often cross the Black Wall to steal knowledge from the divine country, then why can't the gods do the same as the companies?"
The older individual wasn't angered by the younger one's skepticism about 'God,' you could tell he wasn't too convinced by it either. However, this was the gang's religious creed and the glue holding all Haitians together; it was indisputable.
"Because the Black Wall is indeed a true god, and among the gods, the most powerful one. It's keeping the divine country separated from our touch."
As hackers, everyone could see that endless, vast information fortress in the cyberspace.
No end.
It seemed a manifestation of some sort of concept, impossibly decipherable or communicable.
"Moreover, the companies are very cunning. They never intend for the thieves heading to the divine country to return alive, as soon as the divine gaze falls, their detection program immediately seals the data opening, leaving everyone dead in the divine country. And the Black Wall is far more restrictive against the divine than against humanity."
Actually, the gang has contemplated chiseling a hole in the Black Wall like the companies, but in terms of technology, resources, and connections, they couldn't compare to even a finger of the company, left only to sigh in vain, awaiting the passage of time.
"In that case, the Black Wall really is biased, given that humans have messed up the world like this, it would be better off letting the divine take over the world... At least they're better than these corporations."
The young one was somewhat indignant, clearly having no goodwill towards the corporate-dominated world.
More than heading to the divine country, he wished the divine would come to reality and obliterate the sources of all evil.
However, the two didn't seem to plan on staying long, muttering a few whispers before the sound grew fainter, gradually leaving the ruins till it disappeared entirely.
After quite a while, still unable to hear anything, the players quietly retreated some distance, then sprinted away from the underground drainage pipe.
"What, what, what, what were they talking about?" The Mongolian Toplaner looked wide-eyed, having completely misunderstood what those two guys said on the other side, merely followed the others in running.
The other three were also a bit confused, but managed to guess a little.
Brother Ni: "These guys were speaking in Haitian, so they must be the Voodoo Gang."
"Voodoo Gang?" The Mongolian Toplaner shook his head, "Never heard of them."
Compared to big gangs like Tiger Claw, Voodoo Gang was less recognized and operated in smaller ranges, making it difficult to find their traces unless specifically seeking them out. Players' sense of unfamiliarity with them was normal.
Based just on the godly and ghostly nonsense those two voices were discussing, even if not understood, it could be inferred it wasn't anything good.
"How about we take them out? I bet there's definitely some good stuff!" Sword Saint attempted to seek advice from the veteran players.
"Hmm..." Brother Ni frowned, "Let's wait a bit, better to go back and gather some intel on the Voodoo Gang before deciding, otherwise we might end up like last time, suffering a loss."
Seductive Woman: "Agreed."
Previously, they had frequently clashed arbitrarily with gangs and corporations, if not for timely intervention during the Tiger Claw's attack on the bar and ambush of the Trauma Team, the missions might have failed.
Seductive Woman, during that attempt to kill Jotaro, nearly let the opponent get away.
And Mann had also hinted to the players more than once that before a fight, they should gather information first, while they weren't afraid of death, the three-day cooldown was indeed unbearable.
