Chapter 37: Borrowing a Car
Chen Mengying was Xiaofan's class president in middle school, so it's not surprising she knows he lives here. However, it's still a bit unexpected for Xiaofan that Liu Siyan has become so close with Chen Mengying.
Fortunately, Xiaofan had already mentioned Shen Zuimo's existence when he asked Chen Mengying to help him buy clothes, so explaining wasn't too difficult.
"So, what did you find out?" Shen Zuimo took the lead and asked.
Hearing this, Xiaofan was silent for a moment. He felt comfortable around everyone here, but he did feel a bit guilty involving Chen Mengying.
"Don't mention it, I waited outside the tax bureau until 5:30, finally caught sight of Zhang Yongchang coming out, and planned to follow him secretly. But how could two wheels outrun four? If it weren't for the traffic lights, I would've been left five streets behind." Clearly, this was why Xiaofan was sweating as he ran back home.
"Find anything?" Shen Zuimo didn't care whether Xiaofan was exhausted; he asked directly.
"No, Zhang Yongchang went straight home after work," Xiaofan replied helplessly.
"This won't work, you have classes tomorrow, right?" Shen Zuimo frowned.
"Siyan... classmate, could you please help me take three days off tomorrow? I can't believe they have no contact at all," Xiaofan turned to Liu Siyan as he spoke.
"Ye Xiaofan, you don't have to force yourself, if it doesn't work out, just let it go," Liu Siyan said sweetly, feeling moved, yet knowing it's not really his business, so there's no need to push too hard.
"Let go? If only I had a car," Xiaofan said in frustration.
"Car? We have plenty at home. How about this: I'll have Uncle Xu bring you one tomorrow, he's just downstairs," Liu Siyan quickly suggested.
That's actually a good idea. With a car, he wouldn't have to exert as much physical effort.
"Oh right, why didn't I think of that, let's go, let's go, let's get the car from your place now. Class President, come with us, I can drop you off at home afterward," Xiaofan said, standing up immediately.
The whole time, neither of the girls asked about Shen Zuimo's identity. Although they were really curious about who the beautiful lady living with Xiaofan was, they couldn't bring themselves to ask.
Chen Mengying also went to Liu Siyan's home, since she hadn't been there before and wanted to see it. One glance around left her shocked. She had assumed Liu Siyan's family was wealthy, but she hadn't expected their house to be this big.
When Liu Zhenghua learned Xiaofan was borrowing a car, he didn't hesitate to let him pick whichever one he wanted. He even instructed Uncle Xu to fill it up with gas and gave him two thousand yuan for backup. Initially, Xiaofan didn't want to accept the money, but Liu Zhenghua insisted he take it. After all, given his status as a big boss, he really needed to be well-prepared for such small matters—fines, tolls, and all cost money.
Xiaofan ended up picking a Volkswagen. Thanks to regular maintenance and infrequent use, it handled quite smoothly.
As Xiaofan's father had given him several thousand yuan to learn to drive during vacation, afraid that if Xiaofan didn't get into college he might have to make a living as a taxi driver in H City, Xiaofan, who had just turned eighteen, already had a C1 license.
It was late, so Xiaofan didn't linger and drove away, dropping Chen Mengying off at her house on the way.
Although Chen Mengying had heard about trouble in Liu Siyan's family, she never expected Xiaofan to help. Also, from the looks of it, their relationship seemed to have greatly progressed, with Liu Siyan's father even approving of Xiaofan.
"Liu Siyan's house is so big," Chen Mengying remarked with admiration from within the car.
"Phew, when I first went to her house, I was just as shocked as you. I was trembling with fright," Xiaofan smiled slightly.
"So, are you and Siyan dating now?" Chen Mengying continued to ask.
"Huh? No, not yet. Class President, are you planning to give me some ideological education again?" Dating and such can wait.
"Well, Siyan is a good girl; she's always concerned about you. After she found out I was your middle school classmate, she frequently came to ask me about your past. I also told her about how you lost the memory card after filming the meteor shower at Phoenix Mountain. She probably likes you," Chen Mengying said with a slight smile, although she fully understood the bitterness behind it.
"Really? You're not just trying to make me happy, are you?" Xiaofan was focused on driving and didn't notice the hidden expressions on Chen Mengying's face.
"Yes. Besides, Siyan is such a good girl, and her family is wealthy. If you get together, it'd be quite a benefit for you," Chen Mengying continued to tease.
"I like her not because her family has money," Xiaofan replied instinctively.
But Xiaofan's instinctive response made Chen Mengying feel even worse. He liked Siyan. Compared to Siyan, she didn't measure up at all. So, her hidden feelings of the past three years were probably best kept hidden again. Still, as long as he is happy, that's what matters more.
"How is Auntie doing? I haven't visited your family for quite a long time," Xiaofan suddenly asked.
"Well, my mom's health is still okay."
"Auntie's health is quite weak; it's too hard on her to keep setting up her stall every night," Xiaofan continued.
"She doesn't set up the stall anymore; the city management confiscated the cart. Now she does some odd jobs at home," Chen Mengying replied. Xiaofan understood her family's situation, and if he hadn't lent a hand when she was about to graduate from middle school, her mom might not have made it through that difficult period.
"If there's ever trouble, feel free to come to me anytime. Those city officials can be quite annoying. But it's good Auntie can rest a bit, ah, oh yeah, I must buy some fruit since Auntie's home, I almost forgot," Xiaofan said, pulling over, and promptly running off to a nearby fruit stand.
"Hey, you really don't have to be so polite."
There was no stopping Chen Mengying from saying so. Xiaofan's character is just like this. Once he's determined to do something, even ten oxen couldn't pull him back. Watching Xiaofan's silhouette, bitterness arose once more in Chen Mengying's heart.
It was like this in their third year of middle school. Initially, Xiaofan was unwilling to attend class, didn't turn in homework on time, and often skipped or missed class. Chen Mengying particularly disliked such boys. Yet despite this, his grades consistently ranked in the top ten in the class. Moreover, he could easily bond with classmates from various classes.
Nevertheless, Chen Mengying still disliked Xiaofan's nonchalant manner. Boys should have a proper appearance, and it was because of one incident that her opinion of Xiaofan shifted drastically. A change from dislike to affection.
