Chapter 134: Chapter 133: Touch Me
All members of Ainz Ooal Gown chose non-human races as their in-game avatars, and for most, there were specific reasons for this choice. They had all experienced malice from humanity in their real lives.
For the majority, this left them with little goodwill toward humanity. Touch Me, however, was an exception. In real life, Touch Me was a police officer. His choice of a non-human race was driven by frustration with the scheming and conflicts among people he had witnessed.
As a police officer, he had seen countless instances of scheming among close friends and family members—people crossing moral boundaries for the sake of so-called "interests."
Yet, none of this swayed Touch Me's commitment to justice. He remained steadfast in his principles.
In contrast, Ulbert, the creator of Demiurge, was someone who operated on the fringes of the law in real life, frequently interacting with the police. He had a strong dislike for these figures who seemed to carry a "halo of justice" around them.
This was the reason he often quarreled with Touch Me in the game.
Despite always being targeted by Ulbert, Touch Me never blamed him. This was because Touch Me was a just person (though admittedly, that might sound a bit far-fetched)...
The real reason was that Touch Me believed Ulbert's negative feelings toward the police might have stemmed from his own past experiences. Meanwhile, Touch Me had grown up under the care of a heroic figure, which shaped him into the person he was today.
On the last day before YGGDRASIL's servers shut down, Touch Me was pursuing a criminal (let's use their in-game name since a real name is hard to come up with):
"You can't escape. Surrender now!"
Touch Me raised his handgun and aimed it at a man dressed in black ahead of him.
"Hahaha! So it's you, Touch Me!" the man in black said with a laugh.
Touch Me froze for a moment—Touch Me? Then he remembered that was his in-game name.
"Who are you?"
"Why, of course, I'm the drug lord you've been hunting for five years, Black Crow. But perhaps you'll recognize me better by another name: Ulbert."
"Ulbert, you're actually Black Crow!" At that moment, Touch Me was utterly shocked. The person he had spent so much time with was, in fact, the very target he had been pursuing in real life.
Ulbert, however, casually took out a bottle of liquor and began drinking on his own.
"Touch Me, I hate people like you who live in the light. Why is it that people like you are born into the light, while I've had to grow up in a pitch-black darkness where there's no hope?
Even after I washed my hands of everything, why do you people still have to hunt me down? I want my next generation to live in the light too—why can't you just let me go?" Ulbert said, his voice heavy with emotion.
"Then you can do something legitimate," Touch Me replied calmly.
"Something legitimate? Do you think I've had that kind of opportunity? Who wouldn't want to live in the light if they weren't forced by circumstances?" Ulbert shouted angrily.
"Leniency for confession, severity for resistance. If you come clean about everything, it could reduce your sentence," Touch Me said, unwilling to continue debating such matters.
"Heh... even at a time like this, you're still spouting such righteous nonsense. I know exactly what I've done—it's absolutely a death sentence. Even if I confess everything, the best I can hope for is a temporary reprieve," Ulbert replied with a bitter smile.
"Here, have a drink." Ulbert extended the bottle toward Touch Me.
"You should think carefully. This is the kind of fine liquor you couldn't afford in a lifetime of hard work. Are you sure you want to pass this up?"
Touch Me didn't dare relax for even a moment. If Ulbert managed to escape, everything would be ruined.
"You know," Ulbert continued, "since the day I can remember, I've been fighting just to survive. For myself, I've killed countless people. I knew that to keep living, I'd have to hurt others."
"Just like the law of the jungle, it's survival of the fittest. It's either me or someone else who dies. In the Delta region, no one's hands are clean. When I finally had the means to leave that place and live as an ordinary person, I thought of something:
If it's so easy to be an ordinary person, why are there still so many people heading to the Delta?
I captured many newcomers to the Delta, and from them, I learned this: if a person has no value, they are destined to live worse than a dog.
In that moment, I realized I couldn't give up the power I held. When I reached the pinnacle, I gave everything up, chose a successor, and faded into obscurity.
But you people won't let it go—you have to hunt me down to the very end. Well then, come on. Let's see who the real hunter is."
"Harming others must be punished. The innocent must not suffer, and since no one else is stepping up to defend them, I will. Since you chose this path, you must have known this day would come," Touch Me said firmly.
"You speak of humanitarianism, but do you know how many people die every year at their workplaces? They're just trying to survive in this world. Who stands up for them? The cheapest thing in this world is human life," Ulbert retorted.
Touch Me was about to respond, but Ulbert cut him off.
"It's almost time. I need to get going. Touch Me having you accompany me on this journey—it's truly a blessing. Thank you," Ulbert said with an expression of sincere gratitude.
In that moment, Touch Me suddenly realized something.
Touch Me immediately activated his microphone and shouted, "Everyone, be careful! There's a bomb here!"
"Boom!"
A series of explosions erupted within a kilometer radius, killing countless officers, including Touch Me. The very first to be killed was Ulbert himself.
In his final moments, just before his death, Ulbert saw a blinding flash of light.
........
Amid the chaos, Touch Me was consumed by an endless darkness.
When he opened his eyes again, he found himself in a jungle.
Touch Me extended his hand, only to discover that it was not a hand but a claw.
"These claws... they look familiar."
He walked to a nearby river and looked at his reflection in the water.
"This is... my in-game character... Am I not dead?"
Touch Me tried to log out of the game but couldn't find the control interface.
Looking at the insect-like reflection resembling an ant in the water, Touch Me recalled the choice he made when he first entered the game.
At the time, he wanted to choose an ant as his race, but since no such race existed, he chose the one that resembled an ant the most.
The reason was that he liked ants. Ants worked together with unity, fearlessly facing death, never scheming against one another, and always striving for the benefit of the group.
He admired the nature of ants.
"First, I need to figure out where I am!"
Touch Me glanced around...
