OP: Sovereign of Blood and Seas

Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Upgrades and Unrest

The stolen Marine ship sailed smoothly across the calm waters of the East Blue, the horizon painted with soft oranges and purples as the sun began to set. Eric leaned against the ship's railing, the sea breeze brushing against his face. The adrenaline from the fight with the Sea Beast had long since faded, replaced by a simmering exhaustion.

Nami stood at the helm, her focus split between steering and scanning the horizon for any signs of trouble. She had been quieter than usual since their escape, her guarded demeanor slipping back into place.

Eric's thoughts wandered to the system. The constant upgrades and enhancements were making him stronger, but they also came with a weight he couldn't ignore. The hunger—the gnawing, endless desire for blood—was growing more intense with each use of his powers.

The system's familiar chime interrupted his musings.

Eric straightened, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten. "Expanded features?"

A new screen appeared, its interface sleeker and more organized than before.

Eric's eyes widened as he scanned the new menu. The Reputation System in particular caught his attention—it was a reminder that this world wasn't just about brute strength. Influence and alliances could be just as important.

He focused on the Stat Enhancement section, eager to allocate the points he had earned.

After a moment's thought, Eric distributed the points evenly between Strength and Bloodline Control, pushing both to higher levels.

The system's chime sounded again, announcing a new set of quests.

"Looks like it's time to level up again," Eric muttered, his lips twitching into a grin.

"What are you mumbling about?" Nami's voice broke through his focus.

Eric turned, meeting her sharp gaze. "Just thinking about our next steps. Where exactly are we heading, anyway?"

Nami hesitated, her fingers tightening on the wheel. "There's a town a few hours from here. Small place, but it should have what we need—food, supplies, information."

"And trouble?" Eric asked, raising an eyebrow.

She smirked. "That depends on how good you are at keeping your head down."

The town was a modest port nestled against the edge of a lush island. Wooden docks extended into the water, crowded with fishing boats and small trading vessels. The streets were lined with simple buildings, their thatched roofs and faded paint speaking to the humble nature of the town's inhabitants.

Eric and Nami disembarked quickly, blending into the bustling crowd. Eric pulled his hood up, his pale skin and sharp features drawing a few curious glances. Nami moved with purpose, her sharp eyes scanning the market stalls and taverns.

"We split up here," she said, her tone leaving no room for argument. "You check out the eastern side of town—see if there's anything useful. I'll handle the docks."

Eric frowned. "Splitting up doesn't seem like the best idea."

"You'll be fine," Nami said, already walking away. "Just don't start a fight you can't finish."

Eric watched her disappear into the crowd, her orange hair a beacon in the sea of faces. He sighed, shaking his head, and turned toward the eastern part of town.

The market was a chaotic mix of shouting vendors, clinking coins, and the rich smells of fresh seafood and spices. Eric kept his head down, listening to the snippets of conversation around him.

"Did you hear? Another pirate crew passed through last night. Left the tavern in shambles."

"Marine patrols are getting stricter. Saw a few of them dragging someone off this morning."

"Word is, a bounty hunter's in town. Nasty piece of work—goes by the name 'Ironfang.'"

The last bit of information made Eric pause. A bounty hunter could mean trouble, especially if they were looking for the stolen Marine ship.

He continued through the market, his senses on high alert. It didn't take long for trouble to find him.

"Hey, you!"

Eric turned to see a burly man with a scarred face and a jagged sword at his side. The man was flanked by two others, their leering expressions making their intentions clear.

"You look like you've got coin to spare," the leader said, stepping closer. "Why don't you share some of it with us?"

Eric sighed, his hand instinctively going to the dagger at his belt. "Not interested."

The man's grin widened, revealing yellowed teeth. "Wrong answer."

The first blow came fast—a swing of the jagged sword aimed at Eric's head. He ducked, his enhanced reflexes making the movement effortless. The second thug lunged with a knife, but Eric sidestepped, driving his dagger into the man's side.

Blood sprayed, and Eric felt the familiar surge of power as his abilities awakened. The hunger roared to life, and he didn't fight it.

"Blood Puppeteer," he muttered, focusing on the wounded man.

The thug froze, his movements jerky as Eric took control. The leader and the remaining thug hesitated, their bravado faltering as their comrade turned against them.

Eric forced the controlled man to swing his knife, slashing at the second thug's arm. The leader snarled, charging forward, but Eric was faster.

He released the first thug and lunged at the leader, his dagger finding its mark in the man's chest. The fight was over in seconds, the remaining thug fleeing into the crowd.

Eric wiped his dagger clean, his breathing steady. Around him, the market had fallen silent, the onlookers staring in shock.

"Who the hell are you?" someone whispered.

Eric ignored the question, turning to leave. He could feel the weight of their gazes, but he didn't care. He had bigger things to worry about—like finding Nami and getting out of this town before more trouble found them.

By the time Eric reached the docks, the sun was beginning to set. He found Nami near a cluster of fishing boats, her arms crossed and her expression tense.

"What happened to keeping a low profile?" she asked, her tone sharp.

"Let's just say some people didn't take no for an answer," Eric replied.

She sighed, rubbing her temples. "Great. Now the whole town's probably talking about us."

Eric shrugged. "I handled it."

Nami studied him for a moment, her frustration giving way to curiosity. "You're not like anyone I've met before. Those guys in the market—they should've had you outnumbered and outmatched."

Eric smirked. "I told you. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve."

She shook her head, though there was a faint smile on her lips. "Just don't let it go to your head. We've got bigger problems."

"Like what?"

"Like the bounty hunter who just docked his ship," Nami said, nodding toward a large vessel in the distance.

Eric followed her gaze, his jaw tightening. A man stood at the bow of the ship, his muscular frame and sharp features radiating danger. His armor gleamed in the fading light, and a massive sword rested across his back.

"Let me guess," Eric said. "Ironfang?"

Nami nodded. "If he's here, things are about to get a lot more complicated."

Eric's grin widened, the thrill of the hunt sparking in his chest. "Good. I've been meaning to test out my new powers."
