Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Into the Fray
The following morning came with a strange stillness. The air was heavy with humidity, and the ocean waves barely stirred. Eric stood at the edge of the jungle, his gaze fixed on the horizon. A feeling he couldn't quite place gnawed at him, like the calm before a storm.
Behind him, Nami rummaged through the supplies they had gathered the previous day. Her movements were precise, almost methodical, as she organized their meager provisions.
"We should head back to the ship soon," she said, glancing over her shoulder. "The longer we stay here, the higher the chance someone tracks us."
Eric nodded but didn't move. His enhanced senses were on high alert, the jungle's subtle noises failing to mask the faint shift of something unnatural in the air.
"Do you hear that?" he asked, his voice low.
Nami paused, frowning. "Hear what?"
The answer came before Eric could respond—a low, rumbling roar that shook the ground beneath their feet.
Eric spun toward the sound, his dagger already in hand. From the depths of the jungle, trees toppled and branches snapped as something massive pushed through. The first thing he saw was the creature's hulking frame—easily twice the size of an elephant, with thick, scaly skin that shimmered faintly in the sunlight.
"What the hell is that?" Nami whispered, taking a step back.
Eric's system chimed.
Hostile Detected: Sea Beast (Juvenile). Threat Level: High.
Objective: Defeat the Sea Beast. Reward: +500 XP, Rare Skill Upgrade.
Eric tightened his grip on the dagger, adrenaline surging through him. The creature let out another roar, its yellow eyes locking onto them as it charged forward.
"Run!" Nami shouted, bolting toward the beach.
Eric hesitated for a split second, his instincts warring with the hunger that rose inside him. This thing was massive—powerful—and the thought of its blood made his senses sharpen.
He took off after Nami, his enhanced speed allowing him to catch up quickly. "Get to the ship!" he yelled. "I'll hold it off."
"You're insane!" she shouted back.
"Just go!"
Nami hesitated, her eyes darting between him and the approaching beast, but finally, she nodded. "Don't die!"
As she sprinted toward the ship, Eric skidded to a halt, turning to face the creature. The system chimed again, offering a new prompt.
Recommendation: Utilize Blood Puppeteer to exploit the target's exposed wounds.
"Easier said than done," Eric muttered.
The Sea Beast barreled toward him, its massive tail sweeping through the air. Eric dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the strike, and rolled to his feet. His dagger felt pitifully small compared to the creature's sheer size, but he didn't back down.
The beast lunged again, its jaws snapping shut inches from Eric's head. He darted beneath it, slashing at its underbelly with his dagger. The blade bit deep, drawing a spray of dark, viscous blood.
Eric grinned as the scent hit him. "Got you now."
The creature roared in pain, its movements growing more erratic. Eric focused on the fresh wound, extending his will toward it. The connection snapped into place, and the creature froze mid-charge.
"Blood Puppeteer," Eric said, his voice steady.
The strain was immediate. Controlling something this massive was unlike anything he'd attempted before. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and his muscles trembled as he forced the beast to kneel.
"You're not so tough now, are you?" he muttered, though his breath came in ragged gasps.
The Sea Beast thrashed against his control, its sheer power threatening to break free. Eric clenched his fists, pouring every ounce of his will into maintaining the connection.
Behind him, he heard Nami's voice. "Eric! Get out of there!"
He turned, spotting her at the edge of the beach. She was holding the ship's rifle, her face pale but determined.
"Shoot it!" Eric shouted.
Nami hesitated, her grip on the rifle tightening. "Are you crazy? You're too close!"
"I'll handle it—just do it!"
Nami cursed under her breath but raised the rifle, aiming for the creature's exposed underbelly. The shot rang out, the sound deafening. The bullet struck true, embedding itself deep in the wound Eric had created.
The Sea Beast let out a final, agonized roar before collapsing to the ground. Eric released his hold on it, his legs nearly giving out from the effort.
The system chimed again.
Hostile Defeated. Experience Gained: +500. Skill Upgrade: Blood Puppeteer (Tier 3 – Increased Duration and Strength).
Eric stumbled toward the beach, exhaustion threatening to overtake him. Nami rushed to meet him, her expression a mix of relief and frustration.
"You're an idiot," she said, grabbing his arm to steady him.
He managed a weak grin. "Yeah, but it worked."
She shook her head, but her lips curved into a faint smile. "Come on. Let's get back to the ship before something else shows up."
The ship felt like a sanctuary as they climbed aboard, leaving the island and its dangers behind. Eric leaned against the railing, his body still trembling from the fight.
"You were insane back there," Nami said, her tone softer now.
"I had it under control," Eric replied, though he wasn't sure he believed it himself.
She crossed her arms, studying him. "You've got some serious power, don't you? That wasn't normal."
Eric hesitated. Telling her about the system felt like too much, but he couldn't deny what she'd seen.
"I've got a few tricks," he said finally. "Comes in handy when things get messy."
Nami frowned but didn't press further. "Well, whatever it is, it saved our lives. So… thanks."
Eric raised an eyebrow. "Was that a compliment?"
"Don't get used to it," she said, though her smile betrayed her words.
As the ship sailed into open water, Eric couldn't help but feel a flicker of pride. For the first time, he'd truly tested his powers—and he'd won.
But deep down, he knew this was only the beginning.
