Chapter 64 - Is It a Monster or a Collective Consciousness?
Although they were set to eliminate the monster on the moon, the sight of the huge eye on the lunar surface caused a flicker of concern in Wu Ge’s heart.
The giant eye overlooked the Earth emotionlessly, but its appearance was not very clear, as if shrouded in a mist on the moon.
According to Xiao Chao’s report, Wu Ge learned that most of the bases on the moon had vanished, and countless Earthlings working at those lunar bases had been devoured without a trace or warning, in a bizarre and mysterious manner.
This eerie eye was unlike any creature Wu Ge knew of, and even the information from the Star Worm civilization contained nothing about such a being. Wu Ge could only conclude that this was a unique monster specific to the peculiarities of Earth.
From the cosmic knowledge acquired from the Star Worm civilization, it’s understood that every world housing intelligent beings harbors some secrets, including powerful artifacts known as divine tools, and certain formidable creatures acting alone referred to as prehistoric monsters.
Some civilizations dispatch specialized exploration teams in search of these divine tools and prehistoric monsters to bring them back for study.
By now, the Earth’s surface had implemented the Sky Screen Plan, with countless Creation Particles covering the sky and a false star map concealing the real moon. Despite this, people’s fear remained unabated.
They all knelt on the ground, praying for salvation from the deities.
Under Ya Yi’s coordination, numerous elders and knights from many temples mobilized, determined to prevent the spread of fear.
Meanwhile, Wu Ge and the Fox Immortal were en route to the moon aboard a spaceship. She remarked, “A monster that feeds on human fear is terrifying. Just one is capable of destroying a civilization!”
The eye on the moon continued to grow, seemingly planning to devour the moon before targeting Earth.
However, as people’s fear began to subside, the monster’s growth also slowed. Perhaps if it could no longer feed on fear, it would leave.
Wu Ge drew his Golden Essence Sword, which had proven effective against such evil beings back at the Containment Facility.
“We must eliminate this monster,” Wu Ge declared. “If it continues to grow unchecked, we won’t be able to control it!”
As the spaceship neared the moon, they were met with countless wailing sounds, an anomaly since sound cannot travel through the vacuum of space. Yet, the wails reached their ears clearly.
Furthermore, Wu Ge and the Fox Immortal saw many grotesque and even nauseating buildings on the lunar surface, twisted structures with walls adorned with huge, unemotional eyes staring at them, as if declaring this place an abyss.
The Fox Immortal suggested, “I believe this is a manifestation formed from human fear, a psychic visualization, directly imprinting images and sounds into the mind rather than existing physically.”
Wu Ge asked, “Can you locate the monster’s true form?”
Between the bizarre buildings’ crevices, indescribable horrors lurked, and a continuous low whispering filled their ears, as if demons had entered their minds.
The atmosphere here was too strange and eerie, enveloped in mist that reduced visibility to less than fifty meters as their spacecraft landed.
Suited in cosmic battle powered armor, Wu Ge and the Fox Immortal disembarked. The Fox Immortal said, “I still can’t determine if this is a biological entity or a consciousness formed from malice. Fortunately, it constantly emits psychic waves in all directions. By following these waves, we can find its core.”
“Good job!” Wu Ge exclaimed. “Let’s go!”
Rushing towards the core of the psychic wave emission, Wu Ge and the Fox Immortal encountered a palace constructed from huge stones on their way. Inside the palace stood humans dressed in black, not werewolves, mechanical insect races, or demons, but actual humans.
They stared at Wu Ge and the Fox Immortal emotionlessly, their eyes with black scleras and white pupils, their heads turning to follow Wu Ge and the Fox Immortal’s movements without speaking or making any move, just coldly staring.
The number of these black-clad individuals increased, filling the surroundings and floating in the air, their gaze fixed on Wu Ge and the Fox Immortal without blinking.
Such a situation, being watched by countless eerie figures, would have unsettled anyone ordinary.
But Wu Ge and the Fox Immortal, being far from ordinary, kept moving forward through the crowd until they reached the source of the psychic waves.
There, they found a circular mirror.
Wu Ge saw only himself in the mirror, but his reflection had its eyes closed. Approaching to shatter the mirror with his Golden Essence Sword, the reflection mirrored his actions, raising its own sword.
Sensing danger, Wu Ge instantly refrained from using the sword and instead threw a punch with his left hand. However, when his fist hit the mirror, an equal force rebounded, sending Wu Ge flying backward.
“That was close,” Wu Ge thought, realizing if he had swung his sword, he would have faced the strike of his own Golden Essence Sword returned.
“Fox Immortal!” Wu Ge shouted, looking around but found no sign of the nine-tailed fox. The multitude of black-clad individuals had vanished, leaving Wu Ge alone.
Engulfed in an instant sense of profound isolation, Wu Ge’s Golden Essence Sword trembled slightly, then let out a crisp ring. A scorching energy flowed through his body, and his True Dragon Qi operated wildly, keeping the chilling air at bay.
Wu Ge surveyed his surroundings, murmuring, “Was I devoured, or was the Fox Immortal?”
Wu Ge didn’t panic; he began searching for the giant eye, which seemed as if it had never existed.
The Fox Immortal was gone, the spaceship that had brought them to the moon was gone, and Wu Ge didn’t know if he had been devoured or if it was the nine-tailed fox and the spaceship. Now, he was trapped here, unable even to contact Xiao Chao.
But Wu Ge, being a powerful cultivator far beyond the ordinary, experienced in sensing psychic changes and perceiving four-dimensional spaces, feared no illusion. Having achieved the Spirit Manifestation stage, he could observe the world freely beyond his physical form.
Now, he prepared to unleash his true strength for the first time, raising his Golden Essence Sword high. He channeled both his True Dragon Qi and mental power into the sword, causing it to emit an incredibly dazzling light.
