Chapter 15 - Only I Walk Alone
That day, Wu Ge was playing Dou Di Zhu (Fight the Landlord) with the maid Xiao Chao and Xiao Luo. Xiao Luo, who had been losing, finally managed to become the landlord and even got a pair of jokers, ready to dominate the game. However, Military Xiao Chao suddenly sent a message saying she had found traces of humans.
Moreover, it was human blood that was found, and after genetic comparison, it was confirmed without a doubt to be human. This instantly energized Wu Ge.
After 5 years, they finally found a second human on Earth; after 5 years, Wu Ge was no longer alone; after 5 years, there was finally new hope for the human race.
Wu Ge put down his cards, immediately suited up in his power armor, and then boarded the transport aircraft, leaving a bewildered Xiao Luo behind.
She felt particularly aggrieved, having finally gotten such good cards!
Once on the transport aircraft, Military Xiao Chao’s voice came through, “After genetic comparison, the individual has been confirmed to be a young female.”
Wu Ge was surprised, “A female, what a coincidence?”
They did not know the status of the humans abducted by a higher civilization. Saving them was a very distant goal for Wu Ge and Xiao Chao, but if a second female human was discovered on Earth, then there was a possibility for humans to continue.
Xiao Chao said, “I’ve already thought of a name. The first child will have the surname Wu, the second child will take the mother’s surname, but starting from the third child, we will begin with the first surname from the Hundred Family Surnames…”
Wu Ge was dumbfounded, he asked, “What’s going on? Why have you thought of the names already? Also, do you not trust my ability to name?”
Xiao Chao suddenly went silent.
Wu Ge said, “Speak up. Are you that dissatisfied with the names I choose?”
Xiao Chao finally spoke, but this time about the human probability judgment, saying, “The mission target has a 99.99% probability of being human, estimated to be injured. Medical and combat robots have been dispatched in advance.”
Thinking of the word “injured,” Wu Ge also became nervous, silently praying that nothing bad had happened to her!
The mission’s target location was far from City A, almost halfway across the globe, located in the America.
Wu Ge had already adjusted the translation system in advance, and somehow, he was also a bit nervous. It had been five years since he had seen a living human.
After a long flight, the transport aircraft delivered Wu Ge to the mission location. They immediately began the search and rescue operation. Since Xiao Chao’s surveillance robots had found blood traces and had already conducted several searches of the area, they had thoroughly scanned the region.
Xiao Chao said, “Based on the fastest human pace, traces of this human should exist within this area. Unfortunately, up to this point, we have still not found the mission target.”
Wu Ge took off his helmet and said, “Let me try.”
He closed his eyes, then carefully communicated with the spirits of the earth, trying to connect with the mountains, rivers, and vegetation. He sensed carefully, searched earnestly, and finally, he opened his eyes, his expression suddenly filled with sorrow.
“I found her…”
Wu Ge’s voice was no longer cheerful. It was very low and filled with loss as he began to walk.
Xiao Chao said nothing. She had already anticipated what had happened.
Wu Ge led the robot team out of the area, walking a long distance, and then came to a valley. The sound of wolves howling continuously echoed, with several gray wolves lingering at the mouth of the valley. And on the grass at the entrance of the valley, they saw fresh blood.
The wolves saw Wu Ge and the group of robots, lowering their heads and growling softly at them, baring their teeth in an attempt to drive them away.
Xiao Chao was controlling the robots to raise their assault rifles, but Wu Ge suddenly gestured with his hand, saying, “Follow me.”
As Wu Ge advanced, the wolves slowly retreated. Faced with the large number of fully armed robots, the gray wolves were frightened and dared not attack rashly.
Wu Ge led the robots into the valley, where they saw a body, a human body covered in wolf fur. It was a girl with messy hair, resembling a wild person, lying on the ground with a huge piece of white wolf fur draped over her back.
The wolves were guarding her, with the two strongest gray wolves growling softly at Wu Ge and his team, baring their teeth as if they might attack at any moment.
The robots advanced boldly, and the wolves pounced but were subdued by the robots.
Wu Ge approached the girl and saw her peaceful expression. She lay there on the grass, eyes closed, her face dirty yet incredibly serene, as if she were asleep.
As Wu Ge checked her body, the wolves howled in protest, watching him with angry eyes. They struggled to free themselves from the robots’ control but failed.
They could only watch as Wu Ge inspected the wounds on the girl’s body. Wu Ge said, “These aren’t fatal wounds. How did she die?”
Xiao Chao dispatched a medical robot to scan, which caused another round of howling from the wolves, filling the valley with their cries.
A moment later, Xiao Chao reported, “This human girl died of organ failure due to aging.”
Wu Ge was astonished, “How is that possible? She looks to be only sixteen or seventeen years old.”
Xiao Chao replied, “She was a ‘wolf child,’ raised by wolves. She firmly believed in her heart that she was a wolf, and sixteen years is already old age for a wolf!”
Wu Ge asked in a deep voice, “Is it because of mental strength?”
Xiao Chao confirmed, “Yes, her spirit affected her physical body. When her spirit aged, her body aged as well. Although her body was human, her spirit had completely become a wolf.”
Wu Ge fell silent, reflecting on how she had become a respected alpha wolf. The surrounding wolves had regarded her as their leader, so even in death, they loyally guarded her body.
Wu Ge looked again at the girl’s face, her lips slightly curved in a smile. Perhaps dying surrounded by her wolf pack was the greatest happiness for her?
“Release the wolves. Let them send her off on her last journey!”
The robots obeyed Wu Ge’s command and released the wolves, which returned to their leader’s side. They raised their heads and howled loudly, their cries echoing through the valley and drawing the attention of countless animals.
The wolves were bidding farewell to their leader in their own way, their howls causing Wu Ge’s heart to ache.
Am I destined to walk alone after all?
