Only God

Chapter 589 Devil

Facing this proactive mission, Eden couldn't help but feel a hint of nervousness.

But speaking of which, during last night's ambush, the priest was just as tense, though the surge of adrenaline in the moment of crisis kept him from losing his ability to fight.

Following Bright's command, the Night Watchmen sent out a six-person squad to collaborate with a cavalry in scouting the assassins' camp. Due to the Watchmen's general lack of horsemanship, each of the six rode with a cavalryman on a single horse.

Gallop across the vast meadows, Eden looked straight ahead, praying in his heart for the Lord's protection.

The party traveled from morning until afternoon, finally spotting the prominent tent peaks in the meadow from afar, tightening everyone's nerves at the same moment.

The Cavalry Captain sent several scouts to circle the distant camp to assess the situation, and before long, all the scouts had returned.

"It seems to have been abandoned."

The scouts reported in unison.

"It's been abandoned? It seems that after failing to achieve their goal last night, they immediately fled."

Eden thought to himself.

After receiving the scouts' report, the Cavalry Captain led his men deeper into the camp. At a glance, just as the scouts had said, the camp had been abandoned, a dozen tents large and small standing empty. There was a series of wheel and hoof prints inside and outside the camp, and the central bonfire was still emitting a wisp of white smoke.

"They left this morning."

The Cavalry Captain surmised and ordered a few scouts to follow the tracks to see if they could catch up with the assassins' party.

Meanwhile, the others stayed behind to collect more clues.

Eden dismounted, casually lifted the tent flap, and looked inside.

The arrangement inside looked disheveled, with quilts, pillows, straw, and other things scattered about, indicating that the assassins had fled in a great hurry.

There was nothing noteworthy in this tent; after a brief search, Eden turned and left.

After searching another tent, Eden did not find any valuable clues.

The situation was a bit different with the third tent, where Eden found Scriptures among the bedding.

It was the Holy Scripture of the True Religion. As Eden flipped through the pages, he found the cover of the book yellowed, but without a single word written inside.

"It's possible... that the owner of this 'Book of Kings and Prophets' is illiterate."

Eden speculated,

"But it's also possible that they are reluctant to leave any writing on it."

Then, as he turned to a certain page, he noticed a strand of hair.

"Using hair as a bookmark? This hair... looks like it's from a Fawon."

Eden confirmed the race of one of the assassins,

"Be cautious of the Fawon when we get to Ausenco."

Fawon are not as populous as Dwarves, humans, or Three-eyed Ape People but are as scarce as the Druid Clan, often active in the woods. They have no nations, city-states, or tribes and usually live in family units.

"The clues are still too few."

After giving the tent another glance, Eden said so.

Thinking that the others must have nearly finished their search, he turned and walked out of the tent, wanting to meet up with the others.

"Ah!"

At that moment, a heart-wrenching scream came from the campsite.

Eden suddenly pricked up his ears; the sound was coming from the southeast direction, at the edge of the campsite, not far from here. He immediately sprang into action and hurried over in no time.

He first caught sight of a small hill from afar, and a Night Watchman rolled down the slope, his body ablaze with fierce flames. The scent of something charred reached his nose, and Eden's nerves instantly tensed.

A strong wind kicked up around the hill, and Eden felt even more on edge as waves of soul energy spread out from the tent on top of the hill.

Hot, oppressive, painful, restless... For some reason, Eden suddenly felt a series of negative emotions. He also felt as if the air around him was too hot, causing him to sweat incessantly.

Spirit Realm Teleportation!

Eden immediately chanted the Ancient Language, and his soul instantly separated from his body.

He saw that his soul was burning with orange flames.

Eden gritted his teeth and swiftly soared towards the tent on the hill.

Moments later, he arrived in front of the tent where, in the vision of his soul, a fiery red figure materialized, its features blurred, almost as if it were a faceless person.

Was that a Devil?

Crack!

The fiery red figure burst out, kicking up gusts of wind with its feet, and the entire tent caught fire as well. It seemed to notice Eden's presence, raising its arm and swinging a fist towards Eden's soul.

The scorching heat wave swept over him, and Eden felt as if his soul was about to melt. He immediately clenched his teeth and chanted the Ancient Language.

"Boru, Ausus."

As the Ancient Language was uttered, a Holy Light emanated from Eden, rippling outwards, and under the splendid winds of the Spirit Realm, it was as if a sacred hymn was resonating.

Purification of Evil Spirits.

Under the surging waves of light, the Devil instinctively stepped back. Nonetheless, it was still hit by the waves, stumbled, and its surface began to peel away like charred skin, disintegrating into powder in the ripples, visibly shrinking in stature.

"Roar!"

Realizing that Eden's divinely inspired Path restrained it, the Devil let out a grudging growl.

"Boru, Ausus."

Eden pressed his advantage, raising his hand and focusing the light to one point. In the blink of an eye, an arrow made of light gathered in his palm and shot out like lightning.

The Devil's body erupted in orange flames, forming a giant shield in front of it. But in front of the Light Arrow Stone, it was as fragile as paper. Just upon contact, it shattered instantly.

Bam!

The Light Arrow Stone crossed the distance, tore through all the fiery shields, and drilled accurately into the Devil's neck, as torrents of fierce flames burst forth like a volcanic eruption.

The Devil let out an angry and miserable wail. It raised its hand as if trying to grasp the gushing flames, but several more Light Arrow Stones pierced through its body at various points.

Bam!

In the final moments of the battle, Eden didn't panic. The final Light Arrow Stone hit its mark precisely in the Devil's head.

A gruesome hole appeared in the Devil's forehead, as if it had been hammered out by a nail, its eyes looked void and dazed, then its knees buckled, and it collapsed to the ground.

The flames gradually extinguished, and the body started to turn to Spirit Realm ash, settling onto the meadow.

Having ended the battle, Eden returned to his body. He gasped for air, looking back at the Night Watchman in haste. With the Devil dead and the flames on the latter extinguished, he seemed to be alright, just lying on the ground, groaning from the pain on a spiritual level, but a bit of rest should be sufficient for recovery.
