Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Firearms
It was another peaceful morning. The black-haired boy woke up to his body's natural rhythm, gazing at the unfamiliar ceiling and breathing in the hazy morning air.
His hand rested gently on a soft, tender place. With a light squeeze, he felt a texture as soft as pudding. Turning his head, he could see the girl with short, orange-colored hair, a white shoulder strap resting on her delicate shoulder.
The boy's dark eyes took in this breathtaking sight, and a powerful sense of satisfaction filled his chest. A deep urge welled up inside him—to plant a kiss on her cheek.
So he did.
His lips brushed her cheek in a light, dragonfly-like kiss. "Good morning. Today will be a wonderful day."
After this small act, a profound sense of peace washed over him. He began changing out of his sleepwear and into his battle gear.
As he dressed, he didn't notice the girl opening her eyes, sneaking a glance at the well-defined muscles of his abdomen.
This must be another perk, Nami thought to herself.
Once fully dressed, Luffy stepped past Nami, grabbed the long sword resting against the door, and hooked a holster onto his waist before opening the door.
The smell of food wafted from the kitchen. Someone had risen even earlier than him, and the table was already set with various dishes.
The sound of a door closing caught his attention. Uta, dressed in a loose white gown and slippers, carefully closed the door behind her.
"Good morning, Luffy."
"Good morning, Uta. Did you sleep well last night?" Luffy asked, pulling out a chair.
"Mmm…" Uta thought back to last night's excitement, a strange feeling swirling inside her. She couldn't tell Luffy, though, or he'd think she was a strange girl.
She simply smiled and nodded.
After a short while, Nami and Nojiko joined them at the table, dressed in casual clothes.
"Last night was the best sleep I've had in ages…" Nojiko scratched her head. It felt like she'd slept so deeply that she hadn't heard a thing.
After breakfast, Bellemere took down a long-barreled rifle from the wall, a relic from her days in the Navy.
"Listen up, kids. If you spot any pirates, run straight to me, got it?"
With her hair tied back, Bellemere inspected the gun to ensure it was still functional before turning to the kids.
"It's just third-rate pirates; it's no big deal," Uta said, holding a piece of toast.
She was the most relaxed among them, having no idea why third-rate pirates would be scary.
Pirates who attacked towns were usually nothing more than weaklings that Shanks could easily crush.
"Exactly. There's nothing to be scared of. We've got the Navy around, and I'll help too," Luffy said, sipping his milk.
"Now, now, you little rascals. If kids were to go to war, then what are adults here for?" Bellemere loaded her rifle, smiling at the group.
Protecting children was an adult's duty. Though Luffy was quite strong, Bellemere would never allow the kids to step onto the battlefield.
"Who knows, maybe the pirates won't come after all. They might flee at the sight of the Navy," Nojiko said. "We have a Rear Admiral here, after all!"
"Exactly! A Rear Admiral is a powerful rank," Bellemere agreed.
"Even most ordinary soldiers couldn't defeat a Colonel in direct combat."
"Those people are like monsters…"
Until the pirates came, life continued as normal in Cocoyasi Village. People went about their work despite the looming threat; abandoning their duties wasn't an option, as it would mean no way to survive.
The villagers carried on, albeit with a slight edge of tension.
Uta, meanwhile, held a camera, recording the villagers' reactions to the looming pirate threat, hoping to turn these moments into a song someday.
"Uta, avoid using your powers in front of others," Luffy said.
"Eh—?" Uta looked at him, puzzled.
"The power of a Devil Fruit user must be kept secret. The unknown keeps you safe. If your abilities are exposed, who knows what could happen." Luffy explained.
Uta's abilities had the potential to destroy the world—a lethal first-strike power. But if people learned her secret, a simple pair of earplugs could leave her defenseless.
With the Navy around, it was best if Uta refrained from using her powers.
"And don't go telling people you're a Devil Fruit user. I'll protect you."
"Mm…"
Uta beamed a bright smile.
Luffy walked toward Vice Admiral Pudding Pudding, who stood holding a telescope, his face serious.
"Rear Admiral, we've spotted a pirate ship within range. Should we commence firing?"
The soldiers reported to Rear Admiral Pudding Pudding, noting the unusually large size of the pirate vessel.
"Load the cannons and evacuate the residents!" Pudding Pudding commanded.
As the cry of a hawk sounded, soldiers blew their whistles to inform the island's residents of the approaching pirates.
After a brief flurry of activity, the villagers retreated indoors. They'd been warned the previous night, so there was no panic.
Bellemere, who had been sorting ingredients for lunch, looked up toward the village. Her house was on the outskirts, a quiet, isolated spot.
Even from here, she could hear the distinctive Navy whistles.
"Pirates are here! Nojiko, get Nami and bring them here to take cover!" Bellemere clutched her rifle nervously. "I'm going to fight!"
Sweat trickled down her brow as memories flooded her mind: Navy soldiers falling in droves like wheat cut down in battle.
The Navy couldn't lose. If they did, there would be no one left to protect the civilians.
"Bellemere, it's too dangerous!" Nojiko grabbed her arm, looking at her with worry.
"You're not in the Navy anymore; you don't have to fight like this."
"Don't worry; I'm strong, remember?" Bellemere said softly.
In the orange grove, Nami also heard the whistles. Although she didn't fully understand what it meant, she sensed it wasn't good news.
She set down her basket of oranges and hurried toward the village.
Luffy and the others were likely at the shore, training, as they always did.
"Luffy, please stand back!" Pudding Pudding turned, spotting Luffy, and quickly urged him to retreat.
The pirate ship was enormous—not your typical pirate vessel.
"What are you saying? I'm going to fight," Luffy replied.
"My grandpa always said I'm going to be Fleet Admiral someday. A Fleet Admiral doesn't run from pirates!"
"But this will turn into a battlefield. It's dangerous!" Pudding Pudding tried to reason with him.
While he knew Garp's grandson was strong, once the cannonballs started flying, there was no telling what might happen.
"Rear Admiral, the pirates aren't slowing down; they're aiming to crash straight into the shore!"
The soldiers reported.
"Are they insane? Such a reckless move…" Pudding Pudding frowned.
"Open fire!"
He commanded harshly. "Sink them!"
The Navy fired their black cannonballs, which had been brought over from the warships the night before.
...
...
A fish-man leaped from the sea back onto the deck, reporting to the blue-skinned fish-man seated at the helm.
"Captain, there's no sign of any ships near the shore."
"Strange. Don't the people on this island use ships for trade?" Arlong stroked his chin thoughtfully.
Suddenly, black cannonballs rained down from the sky, exploding on either side of the ship. One cannonball struck the ship directly.
An octopus fish-man coolly stood at the bow, his six arms crossed, barely reacting to the blast. In a flash, he drew his swords, slicing through the incoming cannonball and reducing it to fragments.
"Ah, Navy cannonballs…" Arlong sniffed the smoky air, a smirk forming on his face.
"Shahahaha! Seems the Navy in this region is rather feisty, lying in ambush instead of facing us at sea. Curious approach…" he remarked, his grin widening. "Full speed ahead!"
The fish-men snarled and grinned, their eyes gleaming with malice as they anticipated the chaos awaiting them onshore.
"Imagine the look of horror on the villagers' faces as we wipe out the Navy in front of them," Arlong said, baring his teeth in a vicious smile.
"Rear Admiral, they're coming straight for us!"
Pudding Pudding didn't need further reports; he could now see the massive pirate ship approaching with his own eyes, its jagged, saw-like prow aimed right at the shore.
Thud—
Some of the soldiers lost their balance, stumbling to the ground as the pirate ship rammed into the shore with a force that shook the entire area like an earthquake. The impact reverberated through the ground, and everyone felt its tremor.
Pirates began pouring off the ship one by one, each stepping onto the sandy shore with an air of menace.
At the forefront were the officers.
One by one, the Navy soldiers stood from their cover, guns aimed at the pirates, creating an imposing visual.
Pudding Pudding's face lit up with a smirk, seeing their numerical advantage. They had dozens of soldiers against only about thirty pirates disembarking from the ship.
"These foolish pirates… I thought they'd at least return fire. But they didn't even bother."
Seeing this, Pudding Pudding felt confident and no longer worried about removing Luffy from the scene. Standing tall, he adjusted his Justice cape as it flapped in the breeze.
"Hey, hey! Isn't this a bit rude, firing on us right away? Can't we all sit down and discuss business?" Arlong taunted, his eyes catching sight of Pudding Pudding's Rear Admiral insignia.
"Cut the crap, you pirates! I've been watching you for a long time," Pudding Pudding replied, hand resting on his sword as he eyed the well-armed and muscular pirates.
The Navy soldiers knelt in rows, rifles trained on the pirates in a display of intimidation.
Luffy placed his hand on his sword, ready to draw, when he felt a firm hand cover his mouth. Bellemere's arm wrapped around him, pulling him back to where she stood, with Nami and the others beside her.
With a serious expression, she placed a finger to her lips, signaling for silence.
"What are you doing here? This is for adults only. Come with me!" Sweat beaded on Bellemere's neck; she had run here quickly, and her heartbeat was still racing.
"So, no room for negotiation, huh, Rear Admiral?" Arlong's expression soured.
"Then I'll just have to kill you and find someone more cooperative." His tone was icy as he spoke.
Pudding Pudding scoffed, drawing his sword with a swift motion.
Shing! The blade gleamed as it left its sheath, but a spray of blood splattered onto the soldiers behind him.
Standing in front of him was a fish-man, arms crossed.
The sword clattered to the ground as Pudding Pudding's hand, weakened by pain, lost its grip. Blood seeped from a hole in his shoulder.
Bellemere stared in shock, struggling to comprehend what had just happened. It had all happened so quickly.
"Don't move!" The Navy soldiers, now alarmed, pointed their guns at the fish-man.
The fish-man, with his long, protruding mouth, stood unfazed, surrounded by the soldiers' guns.
"Pathetic. I've taken down even Vice Admirals before." The fish-man sneered, his voice dripping with disdain.
"That's impossible! A Vice Admiral defeated by someone like you?" Pudding Pudding, clutching his shoulder, was stunned. He'd seen it with his own eyes: the fish-man had moved with an unimaginable speed, spitting with a force so strong it had pierced his shoulder.
The difference in their strength was overwhelming. This is bad, he thought, feeling helpless. Luffy, the villagers… they're all in danger.
"It was a Vice Admiral named Kadalu," the fish-man continued in irritation. "That soft-hearted fool Fisher Tiger let him go. How ridiculous—do humans ever show mercy to fish-men?"
Feeling the raw strength in Luffy's grip, Bellemere released her hold as Luffy pushed her arm away.
"Bellemere, protect Nami and the others. I'll take care of this. If we wait any longer, it'll be the wrong time to make an entrance," Luffy said, his tone firm.
He drew the gun from his belt and aimed it at the long-mouthed fish-man.
Time to deal with this nasty one first.
Getting spit on was just too revolting.
The bullet, imbued with Haki, flew faster than the eye could track, with extraordinary piercing power.
Bang!
A fiery streak shot out.
Pudding Pudding watched in astonishment as the bullet struck the fish-man's head, making it tilt sharply to one side.
The fish-man's babbling ceased as his body fell to its knees, a large bullet hole clean through his head, revealing the trees behind him.
Without hesitation, Luffy aimed at Arlong next.
Another red-hot line of fire streaked toward him.
Arlong staggered as several holes were blasted through his abdomen. The attack was so fast that he had no time to react.
The octopus fish-man and another fish-man officer quickly positioned themselves in front of Arlong.
"How can those bullets be so powerful? At least they only leave penetration wounds…" Arlong muttered, looking down at his abdomen. The bullets had seared through his skin, leaving him strangely unbloodied.
"Watch your heads!" Arlong shouted, warning his men.
Yet even as he finished, several of his crew members' heads exploded in sprays of blood and bone.
Galvanized by Luffy's lead, the Navy soldiers opened fire in unison.
But most of their bullets lodged harmlessly in the fish-men's tough skin or muscles, causing little damage.
"Only that kid's gun is different!" Arlong muttered,
holding his abdomen in pain.
He then watched as Luffy casually tossed aside his gun, grabbing a weapon from a nearby soldier and firing a shot.
With a deafening roar, the weapon blew half a pirate's body into a bloody mist.
And there was more to come...
