Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Rouge!
After hanging up the call with the Den Den Mushi, Karl felt a wave of mixed emotions.
Sengoku had deliberately withheld information about who this person was, likely to prevent Karl from letting Portgas D. Rouge go out of sentiment for Roger's legacy.
But as a transmigrator, Karl knew everything. The critical details Sengoku had kept secret were an open book to him.
This knowledge left him conflicted—he had no desire to involve himself in this matter.
"Since I'm already caught in this mess, I might as well go through the motions. Besides, with Garp as my scapegoat, there's nothing for me to fear," he muttered to himself.
With that thought, Karl finished his lunch and set off without hesitation.
One perk of his transmigration was his enhanced memory. Even details he couldn't recall in his previous life could now replay in his mind like a movie reel, making recollection exceptionally convenient.
After searching through his memories, Karl pinpointed the location where Portgas D. Rouge had given birth to Ace: Baterilla Island!
Standing in the serene streets of the small town on Baterilla Island, Karl admired the peaceful, idyllic life of its residents.
"This is Baterilla Island, huh? The scenery is gorgeous, and the environment is perfect for living. But where exactly is Rouge?" he mused while surveying the surroundings.
However, Karl knew this place would soon turn into a living hell.
Though the Navy hadn't yet arrived, they had already deployed forces to locate women who were six to seven months pregnant.
The Navy knew Rouge's name and her approximate pregnancy stage but had no idea what she looked like. This forced them to mobilize massive manpower to search for pregnant women across the East Blue.
To Karl's surprise, Baterilla Island had more than a few expectant mothers—a revelation that startled him.
Realizing the danger, Karl contacted the village chief and, using his Navy credentials, ordered the evacuation of all Baterilla residents to Loguetown for safety.
It wouldn't be long before the Navy and CP9 agents arrived. Though the Navy wouldn't harm innocent civilians, Karl couldn't guarantee the safety of the pregnant women.
After all, CP9 agents—cold-blooded and ruthless—were also on Rouge's trail. They wouldn't hesitate to target anyone deemed suspicious.
Evacuating these people was imperative; encountering CP9 would mean certain death.
Following a brief discussion, Karl's men transported all of Baterilla Island's residents to Loguetown, the safest location under the circumstances. Other places posed even greater risks.
But as Karl settled the residents in Loguetown, he noticed something odd—Rouge wasn't among them.
Knowing her appearance, Karl had intended to secretly protect her. Yet, she was nowhere to be found—a discovery that deeply puzzled him.
"This doesn't make sense. Rouge was supposed to be here on Baterilla Island. Where could she have gone?"
After ensuring everyone was settled, Karl resumed his search for Rouge, determined to uncover her whereabouts.
While Karl was searching, a member of CP9 unexpectedly approached him.
"I'm with CP9 and the leader of this operation. I heard you evacuated everyone from Baterilla Island to Loguetown. That's perfect—hand them all over to me, and you're no longer needed here."
Karl didn't recognize this arrogant agent, but his attitude instantly annoyed him.
"And who the hell do you think you are to give me orders?"
"Ha! A mere Navy officer dares to defy his superiors? Do you have a death wish?" the CP9 agent sneered, stepping forward to teach Karl a lesson.
But Karl swiftly grabbed the agent's wrist and unleashed a surge of Conqueror's Haki.
"Do you think you're qualified to lay a finger on me?"
With a crisp crack, Karl crushed the agent's wrist, eliciting a scream of agony that drew the attention of nearby bystanders.
"You bastard! A lowly Navy officer dares to harm me? I'm a CP9 agent! Do you have any idea what happens to those who cross CP9? Your family and everyone close to you will face our wrath!" the agent threatened through gritted teeth.
Instead of being intimidated, Karl chuckled.
"Oh, is that so? Let me think for a moment... Hmm, there's Grandpa Garp, Grandpa Sengoku, and Grandpa Zephyr. Oh, and I almost forgot Auntie Tsuru. If you're bold enough to seek revenge, I certainly won't stop you. But do you really dare?"
"You… Who the hell are you?!" the agent stammered, his confidence crumbling.
"My name is Karl. I'm just a humble Navy officer. If you want revenge, feel free to come find me—or my family. We'll be waiting. Now get lost! CP9 has no authority here!"
The agent, though furious, knew he wasn't a match for Karl. He staggered away, clutching his injured wrist, too scared to pursue the matter further.
After driving off the CP9 agent, Karl reassured the evacuees and prepared to return to Navy headquarters.
But as he was about to leave, a pregnant woman approached him and blocked his path.
"Are you Major Karl?"
"Yes, and you are?" Karl asked, puzzled by the unfamiliar woman.
"My name is Rouge—Portgas D. Rouge, to be exact. Nice to meet you, Major Karl. May we talk?"
"You're Portgas D. Rouge? But… you don't look like her."
Rouge smiled faintly and began removing layers of disguise: her long hair, her facial mask. In moments, she revealed her true appearance.
"My apologies, Major Karl. For safety, I had to disguise myself."
"I understand…" Karl replied, his mouth twitching in disbelief. He hadn't expected Rouge's disguise to be so flawless—it had even fooled him.
But then again, if Rouge lacked skill, she would have been captured long ago. The joint Navy and CP9 operation was no trivial matter; her ability to evade them was a testament to her resourcefulness.
Meanwhile, on the now-deserted Baterilla Island, Garp stood alone, disoriented by the empty streets.
"Can someone tell me where the hell everyone went?!" he shouted into the wind, his frustration echoing through the silence.
