"Thumbs up!"
Hearing Roja call his name, Jango felt his heart leap into his throat.
An unprecedented tension gripped him, draining the color from his face.
"Y-Yes, here, sir! But… how do you know my name?"
Roja thought to himself, Should I really tell him I'm a time traveler?
Suppressing the thought, Roja's expression shifted. His aura flared, oppressive and suffocating like a predator locking onto its prey. The sheer pressure bore down on Jango and his crew, driving them to their knees on the deck of their ship.
The tenderness from Roja's earlier demeanor vanished, replaced by a cold and unreadable mask. In an emotionless tone, he asked, "Where is Captain Kuro?"
Faced with the legendary White Dove Admiral of the Marines, Jango didn't dare to hide anything. Without hesitation, he betrayed Captain Kuro.
"Sir! He's in Syrup Village! I—I'll take you there! Just please spare our lives!"
Roja didn't reply immediately. His voice remained cold and steady as he said, "Lead the way."
Without further protest, Jango led Roja to Syrup Village.
As they approached, the system's familiar voice rang in Roja's mind:
[Ding! Congratulations, host! You have completed the sign-in task. Reward: Peak Medical Skills. This skill surpasses even that of Gol D. Roger's famed ship doctor, Crocus. With it, as long as someone still draws breath, there's a significant chance of saving them. It is a medical mastery akin to miracles!]
Roja smiled faintly, satisfied with the reward. The utility of peak medical skills was immense—it was a technique capable of preserving lives and granting second chances.
While Roja basked in the system's reward, Jango grew increasingly anxious. Walking beside Roja felt like treading beside a volcano on the verge of eruption. His heart pounded like a drum, and his nerves were frayed.
"Do you know Captain Kuro's exact location?" Roja asked, his tone sharp and commanding.
"Y-Yes, sir! I visited him once. He's staying with the wealthy family in the center of the village!"
"Then take me there."
"Y-Yes, sir!"
Meanwhile, at Syrup Village
Disguised as a hapless sailor who had been kicked off his ship for a minor mistake, Captain Kuro had skillfully ingratiated himself with Kaya's family. His disheveled appearance and feigned humility quickly earned their sympathy. They took him in as their housekeeper, unaware of the wolf they had invited into their home.
Surveying the luxurious home, Kuro's cold eyes gleamed with hidden ambition.
"Three years," he muttered under his breath, his lips curling into a cruel smile. "Three years of playing the role of a servant. When the time comes, this family will fall, and their wealth will be mine."
In an instant, the smile vanished, replaced by his usual calm and composed demeanor. Suddenly, Kuro caught a flicker of movement outside the window.
From the shadows, he watched a figure climb a tree and knock on the second-story window.
The window creaked open, revealing Kaya's gentle yet annoyed face.
"Usopp," she said with a frown, "I told you not to bother me anymore. I don't enjoy your endless lies."
Usopp, standing on a branch, waved his hands frantically in protest.
"No, no, no! Kaya, this time I'm serious! I promise you, I'm not lying!"
Kaya sighed, her patience wearing thin. "Why should I believe you? Everyone in the village knows you as Usopp the Liar."
Usopp clutched his chest theatrically, feigning deep hurt. "Kaya, I have a disease! If I don't finish telling my stories, I'll die!"
Despite knowing Usopp's antics, Kaya couldn't help but soften. With a small sigh, she nodded. "Fine. But just this once."
Brightening up, Usopp began his tale.
"Okay, so, today I went to sea—"
Kaya raised an eyebrow but let him continue.
"—and I heard about a big-time pirate. They were tired of the pirate life, so they faked their death to escape! But in reality…"
"Usopp," Kaya interrupted, "how could someone fake their death and start over? That doesn't make any sense."
"Simple!" Usopp replied, his eyes lighting up as he improvised. "Imagine this: the pirate hypnotizes a Marine to take their place, pretends to die, and then sneaks off to start a new life. Easy, right?"
Unbeknownst to them, Kuro stood nearby, hidden among the trees, listening intently. His sharp gaze remained locked on Usopp, his mind working rapidly.
As Usopp continued weaving his tale, he felt a sudden chill in the air but dismissed it as nothing.
"Then," Usopp concluded, "this pirate infiltrates a wealthy household, pretends to be their servant, and plots to steal everything they own. Luckily, a brave prince shows up and saves the day!"
At the mention of a servant, Kaya's expression soured.
"That's enough, Usopp!" she snapped. "I can't believe you'd make up such a story just to insult my family! We just hired a new butler today. Are you implying something?"
"N-No! That's not what I meant!" Usopp stammered, confused by her sudden anger.
But Kaya slammed the window shut, refusing to hear another word.
Dejected, Usopp sighed. "What did I say wrong?"
As he climbed down from the tree, he felt a sharp gaze on him. Turning around, he came face-to-face with a man in a black suit and glasses.
"Who… Who are you?" Usopp asked, unease creeping into his voice.
Kuro adjusted his glasses, a cold smile playing on his lips.
"So, you've figured me out," he said, his voice low and menacing. "I must admit, I underestimated you. But no matter—your discovery means nothing, because you won't live to tell anyone."
With those words, Kuro slipped on his razor-sharp Cat Claws. The deadly glint of the blades reflected in Usopp's widening eyes.
It was only then that Usopp understood the chilling wind he had felt earlier…
