"Wow, what kind of day is it to bring so many big shots to this tiny Loguetown?"
Byakuya squinted at Mihawk and Shanks, his voice carrying a playful tone.
Despite the formidable opponents before him, there was not a trace of fear in Byakuya's words.
To an outsider, it might even seem like Mihawk and the Red-Haired Pirates were the ones surrounded by Byakuya.
Shanks' gaze quickly landed on Luffy, severely injured and pinned under Byakuya's foot.
He pointed at Byakuya and shouted, "Byakuya, let Luffy go!"
But instead of complying, Byakuya ignored Shanks' threat and casually grabbed Usopp, who had been pretending to be unconscious.
Byakuya didn't respond to Shanks but instead turned to Yasopp, who stood visibly tense among the Red-Haired Pirates.
"Yasopp," Byakuya said with a smirk, "does this face look familiar to you?" He held Usopp up for everyone to see.
The moment Yasopp got a clear look at Usopp's face—almost a mirror image of his own, complete with the same long nose as his late wife—his emotions surged uncontrollably.
He had already sensed some resemblance when he saw Usopp's profile earlier, but seeing his full face erased any doubts.
Yasopp was almost certain the young man in Byakuya's grasp was his son.
Usopp, who had been feigning unconsciousness, couldn't help but peek open an eye upon hearing Byakuya mention Yasopp by name.
His gaze locked with Yasopp's, and seeing the unmistakable similarity, he stammered, "D-Dad…"
"Byakuya, put Usopp down!" Yasopp's reaction was far more intense than Shanks'. In an instant, a flintlock appeared in his hand, aimed squarely at Byakuya's head.
Byakuya could feel the tension as Yasopp's killing intent locked onto his temple. It was a stark reminder that the Red-Haired Pirates weren't to be underestimated.
Usopp, momentarily moved by his father's concern, quickly lost any warm feelings as Byakuya's grip tightened, cutting off his breath.
Byakuya sneered, "What's the matter, Yasopp? Feeling anxious now? Where was this urgency when you abandoned your family to chase your so-called dream?"
"Did you ever think about how your wife would suffer without anyone to care for her or how your son would end up in a situation like this?"
The sharp accusation stunned everyone. The relationship between Usopp and Yasopp was now clear to all present, but no one had expected Byakuya to know such intimate details.
Usopp's face turned purple from lack of oxygen, teetering on the brink of death. Yasopp, though desperate to act, didn't dare make a move.
He knew that with Byakuya's strength, Usopp's life could end the moment he pulled the trigger.
Yasopp also recognized his limits—while he was a strong fighter in the New World, he was no match for a Marine Admiral like Byakuya.
The only hope lay in Shanks and Ben Beckman. Yasopp's pleas for help were unspoken but understood.
The two, having shared countless battles with Yasopp, couldn't possibly stand by and watch his son die before their eyes.
Shanks, visibly torn, addressed Byakuya, "There's no need to drag the younger generation into this. Isn't it beneath you, as a Marine Admiral, to resort to such tactics?"
"Younger generation?" Byakuya scoffed. "I'm not much older than them myself."
Shanks fell silent. It was easy to forget Byakuya's youth due to his overwhelming presence and strength, which rivaled even the most seasoned veterans.
Despite being barely twenty, Byakuya had achieved the rank of Marine Admiral, commanding respect—and fear—from even the Four Emperors.
Byakuya smirked, his expression wicked. "But don't think this is about my reputation. No, Shanks, I want you to make a choice."
"Between Luffy and Usopp, only one can live. Who will it be? A little warning—if you and Ben Beckman try anything, I'll kill them both. Don't test my limits."
To everyone watching, Byakuya was less of a Marine and more of a devil, reveling in his manipulation of the situation.
Ignoring the silent tension between Shanks and Yasopp, Byakuya turned his gaze to Mihawk.
"Mihawk," he said bluntly, "are you here to cause trouble too?"
After a pause, Mihawk replied, "I couldn't find the so-called swordsman prodigy, Zolo, you spoke of in the East Blue."
"Three-Sword Style Zolo?" Byakuya gestured to the half-conscious Zoro at his feet. "This is him. I was wondering how he ended up here, too."
Mihawk's eyes narrowed as he examined the bloodied Zoro. "This is Zolo?"
Byakuya was momentarily baffled. "Huh? His name are Roronoa Zoro."
Mihawk frowned. "And the Three-Sword Style?"
"..." Byakuya sighed, realizing Mihawk's confusion. He kicked Zoro over to Mihawk. "Ask him yourself when he wakes up."
Byakuya then picked up Zoro's sword, the Wado Ichimonji, which had been stuck in the ground.
Examining the blade, he casually tossed it toward Mihawk.
"This sword is his. Take care of it. And remember our deal—stay out of my way for two years. If I see you again before then, you'll all die."
The terrifying pressure in Byakuya's voice was unmistakable.
When Mihawk caught the sword, the immense force left his arm numb, the shock even rattling his coffin-shaped boat, Mihawk said nothing, letting the boat carry him away at high speed.
It was clear to Mihawk that the sword was a warning—a reminder that Byakuya wouldn't hesitate to kill him if he interfered.
But it wasn't just fear that drove Mihawk to leave. He had a personal code of honor and wouldn't break their agreement.
Moreover, Byakuya had helped him find Zoro, leaving Mihawk with a debt of gratitude.
With Mihawk gone, Byakuya turned back to Shanks and Yasopp. "So, have you made your choice?"
Shanks felt a heavy weight settle over him. On one side was Usopp, his crewmate's son; on the other was Luffy, the boy he had entrusted with Roger's will.
Both choices carried irreversible consequences.
Yasopp, desperate to save his son, couldn't bring himself to ask Shanks to choose Luffy. Usopp, meanwhile, was on the verge of passing out from suffocation.
At that moment, Luffy, coughing up blood, weakly murmured, "Shanks... save Usopp. Don't worry about me... My grandpa won't let Byakuya kill me…"
Listening to Luffy's words, a flicker of resolve flashed in Shanks' eyes as if he had made a decision.
Byakuya pressed his foot harder against Luffy, sighing as he said, "Ah, using Vice Admiral Garp to try and suppress me, huh?"
"Let me tell you something, even if Vice Admiral Garp himself were here, if you anger me enough, I wouldn't hesitate to kill you."
"Do you really think Garp can always be your safety net?"
If it weren't for the fact that Byakuya refrained from using Armament Haki and Luffy's resilience as a rubber human with incredible vitality, he would have been dead from Byakuya's earlier kicks—or at least crushed under his feet.
Seeing this, Shanks hurriedly shouted, "Byakuya, stop!" and added, "I've made my choice."
As Shanks was about to voice his decision, Usopp's father, Yasopp, looked exceptionally tense.
Up in the air, Luffy's father, Dragon, was equally uneasy. Truth be told, Dragon had long considered intervening to save Luffy from Byakuya's grip.
But before he could act, he saw Byakuya apply more pressure after Luffy's earlier remarks, leaving Dragon momentarily frozen.
Dragon couldn't determine whether Byakuya was warning Luffy to watch his mouth, urging Shanks to make a decision or cautioning him, Dragon, not to interfere.
Perhaps it was one of these reasons—or all three.
Although Dragon had enjoyed his earlier conversation with Byakuya and found Byakuya's ideas insightful—especially regarding the "Heart of Justice," which piqued his interest—he wasn't naïve enough to trust Byakuya's intentions toward the Revolutionary Army fully.
Dragon had built the Revolutionary Army from the ground up, turning it into the World Government's greatest threat.
Such a shrewd and calculating figure wouldn't be easily swayed.
While he appeared cordial to Byakuya, even referring to him as a mentor figure and granting him status equal to his own, Dragon hadn't granted Byakuya any real authority within the Revolutionary Army.
Instead, he'd essentially issued Byakuya a blank check for advice and the "Heart of Justice."
Yet Dragon harbored doubts about the Heart of Justice's alleged side effects.
After returning to the Revolutionary Army, he planned to have it thoroughly examined and tested on a physically disabled but strong-willed member of the army to verify its efficacy.
All of this was meticulously planned in Dragon's mind. However, Luffy's sudden appearance disrupted his composure, leaving him momentarily at a loss.
It was at this moment that Shanks made his choice. "Let Luffy go," he said.
Hearing this, Dragon finally breathed a sigh of relief—Luffy's life was saved.
But behind Shanks, Yasopp's expression turned gloomy, with a flicker of regret flashing across his face.
Ben Beckman approached Yasopp and whispered, "You know what Luffy means to the captain and this era."
"For him, the captain even staked his left arm. Luffy's survival is non-negotiable. I hope you can understand the captain's decision."
Though it sounded like comfort, Beckman's words carried deeper implications at such a critical moment.
Yasopp seemed to understand, nodding silently. Observing this, Byakuya smirked in satisfaction.
From today onward, the famed "Red-Haired Pirates" would have an obvious chink in their armor.
Byakuya said indifferently, "Since you've chosen Luffy… I'll leave Usopp to you."
With that, Byakuya casually tossed Usopp toward Shanks' group. Usopp let out a soul-piercing scream as he flew through the air.
"Byakuya, you—!" Shanks glared at the incoming Usopp, his anger erupting.
His Conqueror's Haki surged, causing the very skies above Loguetown to churn and twist as if heralding a natural disaster.
Yasopp, stunned by Byakuya's sudden act of throwing his son, leaped forward to catch Usopp, his expression shifting from disbelief to overwhelming joy.
Noticing Shanks' unleashed Conqueror's Haki, Byakuya's excitement grew. "This is perfect," he thought.
"More experience for me to gain." He, too, unleashed his Conqueror's Haki, directing it toward Shanks.
While it was clear that Byakuya's Haki was far inferior to Shanks', it still astonished those present.
The last time the Red-Haired Pirates clashed with Byakuya, he hadn't even awakened his Conqueror's Haki.
Yet within just a month, Byakuya not only awakened it but had already elevated it to a level most could only dream of. Such talent was unimaginable.
Feeling Byakuya's Haki, Shanks' eyes gleamed with interest. "Fascinating," he murmured to himself.
"A Marine with the will of a king, capable of awakening Conqueror's Haki… My concerns were justified."
Shanks' thoughts weren't unfounded. After all, the Marines were bound by the orders of the World Government and the Celestial Dragons.
Among those who awakened Conqueror's Haki, the free-spirited pirates were far more likely candidates than the tightly controlled Marines.
This fact was evident from the Marine hierarchy itself: aside from Fleet Admiral Sengoku, even Garp, and the Admirals hadn't awakened Conqueror's Haki.
Yet Byakuya had managed to do so, raising questions about his true motives within the Marines.
Unconcerned with such musings, Byakuya focused on the Haki clash, relishing the rapid growth in his experience.
Shanks was like a walking treasure trove of training opportunities in his eyes. A benefactor like this, who willingly came to him, was rare indeed.
However, Byakuya's delight was short-lived. Ben Beckman turned to Shanks and said, "Captain, Luffy is still in Byakuya's hands."
"If we act rashly, he might kill Luffy in desperation. But if we back off, maybe Byakuya will spare Luffy out of consideration for Garp."
Shanks listened to Beckman's advice, feeling increasingly helpless. The situation had spiraled completely out of his control.
The Luffy he had placed so much hope in was now in Byakuya's grasp.
And after everything that had happened, Yasopp likely harbored some resentment toward him, which might jeopardize the Red-Haired Pirates in the future.
All of this turmoil was caused by Byakuya—a seemingly innocent man who, in reality, was deeply cunning.
A surge of unprecedented killing intent rose in Shanks' heart for the first time. This was the first time he truly wanted someone dead.
