Byakuya, while holding back enough not to take Luffy's life, had still inflicted injuries far beyond anything Luffy had endured before.
Pinned beneath Byakuya's foot, it felt like a mountain was crushing him.
Luffy tried to speak but only managed to cough up a stream of blood mixed with fragments of his internal organs.
Despite his dire state, Luffy refused to yield, forcing out the words, "Byakuya, let go of Zoro!"
Zoro, still reeling from the earlier strike that left his mouth filled with blood, was in no condition to resist.
His body, seemingly paralyzed, was tossed aside like a discarded object.
Marines quickly secured him with Seastone cuffs, their movements precise and practised.
Byakuya smiled and said to Luffy, "See what your recklessness has led to? Your comrades are now in my hands. Do you know what fate awaits them?"
Without waiting for a response, Byakuya continued, "Let me tell you. They'll be sent to Impel Down, a pitch-black prison where they'll live out their days in misery until they grow old and die."
Hearing the chilling certainty in Byakuya's voice, Luffy froze for a moment before thrashing violently, ignoring the worsening toll it took on his injuries.
His voice, tinged with desperation, pleaded, "Byakuya, I'm their captain! They only came to Loguetown because of my orders!"
"This has nothing to do with them. Let Zoro and the others go. I'll trade my life for theirs!"
Byakuya shook his head and sighed, "It's not that simple. Your background is far more significant than theirs."
"After all, it was your grandfather who brought me from the East Blue to Marine Headquarters, and he's also an old friend of my mentor."
"If I kill you, how would I ever face him—or my mentor, for that matter? But your crew? They don't have such connections. They're expendable."
Luffy's eyes turned red with anger and frustration.
His fists clenched so tightly that his nails pierced his palms, causing blood to drip into the dirt below.
The pain in his heart far outweighed the physical agony.
He gritted his teeth and said, one word at a time, "Byakuya... then, could you at least let them go for my grandfather's sake?"
After speaking, Luffy seemed to collapse under the weight of his emotions.
From childhood, he had never considered his grandfather anything remarkable—just an annoying old man who interfered with his dreams, forcing him to endure harsh "training" and "lessons of love."
Luffy had even wished that Garp would never return to Windmill Village many times.
But that annoying old man had become his last lifeline, a shield saving him from death.
Even worse, Luffy had to use Garp's name to protect his friends from the consequences of his impulsive actions. The sheer irony made his heartache.
Byakuya chuckled softly and pretended to hesitate. "Well, it's not entirely impossible. Your grandfather is a Marine hero, after all."
"I have to show some respect. But are you sure you want to use his reputation to save your pirate friends?"
"Do you realize how much pressure this will bring on Vice Admiral Garp if word gets out?"
"I…" Luffy froze. Despite his straightforward nature, he understood the implications of Byakuya's words.
Byakuya asked, "Do you know why your grandfather wanted you to join the Marines? Do you think it was to stifle your dreams? To restrict your freedom?"
"Let me tell you—it was neither. Your grandfather wanted you to live safely. Do you think the pirate's life is as glorious as Shanks made it seem? Do you think Shanks is a good man?"
Luffy's mind, already in turmoil, became even more chaotic. His emotions were fragile after everything he'd endured that day.
But at the mention of Shanks, Luffy's voice rose in defiance. "Don't you dare insult Shanks!"
To Luffy, Shanks was more than a mentor—a saviour who had lost his arm to protect him.
The bond he felt with Shanks was profound and unshakable.
Byakuya, observing Luffy's outburst, smirked and shook his head. "Look how emotional you get. Shanks has clearly left a deep impression on you."
Without warning, Byakuya pressed his foot harder on Luffy's chest, causing him to vomit more blood. This time, Luffy's injuries were severe enough that death seemed imminent.
Watching from the shadows, Dragon had witnessed everything: Byakuya mercilessly beating Luffy, pinning him to the ground, and their exchange of words.
Yet, strangely, Dragon did not feel anger toward Byakuya.
Instead, he saw Byakuya's actions as a harsh but necessary lesson for Luffy, a way to make him understand the brutal reality of the seas.
Indeed, Byakuya's words carried a message. Life on the seas wasn't a romantic adventure where persistence and dreams guaranteed success.
The real world was far harsher and more unforgiving.
Without absolute strength, no matter how hard you try, reality will eventually force you to bow down.
Even Luffy, in the original story, would have met his end with his entire crew during the encounter with Aokiji if not for his background.
Without that, no Fifth Emperor would rule the seas later. Byakuya gazed at the defiant Luffy and suddenly had a thought.
If he could change Luffy's mindset, the world's source energy he could gain might far exceed what he'd earn by killing him outright.
This idea had crossed Byakuya's mind before, but he urgently needed the world's energy source back then.
Considering Luffy's stubbornness, correcting his way of thinking would likely take enormous time, which Byakuya didn't have back then.
Killing him seemed more efficient. But things were different now. Byakuya had all the time in the world to teach Luffy a proper lesson.
Just as Byakuya was lost in thought, he suddenly sensed two immensely powerful auras approaching Loguetown.
He raised an eyebrow and muttered, "Well, this is unexpected. It seems today's guests are quite remarkable."
Turning his gaze toward the sea, he noticed a small coffin-shaped boat nearing the harbour.
On the opposite side, another ship—the Red-Haired Pirates—was also closing in.
Mihawk's reason for coming to Loguetown was simple.
After hearing that Byakuya was there, he sought to confront him about the so-called swordsmanship prodigy, the three-sword user Zolo.
Mihawk had searched extensively for this individual but had never found him or heard of such a figure.
As for the Red-Haired Pirates, their reason was even simpler. They had been shadowing Byakuya ever since he entered the East Blue.
When Shanks realized Byakuya might become a disruptive force in the seas, he focused all his attention on him, using years of experience monitoring Vice Admiral Garp to track Byakuya's movements.
But when Shanks learned that Luffy had recklessly rushed to Loguetown to confront Byakuya, he was utterly dumbfounded.
"What is he thinking? This is practically a suicide mission!" Shanks thought in disbelief.
"Even Captain Roger wasn't this reckless! And of all people, he chose to confront Byakuya?"
"Anyone else might spare him out of respect for Garp, but Byakuya? That guy wouldn't hesitate to kill Luffy."
"If Luffy dies, my sacrifice—my arm—will be in vain! Half of my life's joy will be wasted!"
Left with no choice, Shanks came to Loguetown to save Luffy.
Loguetown's residents noticed the unusual activity as the ships neared the town. Gasps and whispers spread through the crowd.
"Isn't that Dracule Mihawk, the former World's Greatest Swordsman? And the Red-Haired Pirates, one of the Four Emperors?" someone exclaimed in fear.
"What are they doing here?" another person wondered.
"Could they be here to challenge Admiral Byakuya?" someone speculated.
The suggestion seemed plausible. After all, Mihawk had lost his title as the World's Greatest Swordsman to Byakuya.
It made sense for him to seek revenge after recovering from his injuries.
As for the Red-Haired Pirates, while they didn't seem to have any direct conflicts with Byakuya, there had been minor skirmishes between them in the past.
With Shanks and Mihawk being long-time friends, their joint appearance now was highly suspicious.
Fear rippled through the town.
The combined force of Mihawk and the Red-Haired Pirates was formidable enough to terrify even the Whitebeard Pirates, the strongest of the Four Emperors.
For Byakuya, the newly appointed fourth admiral, defeat seemed inevitable.
The residents began to panic, realizing the scale of the battle about to unfold.
"This isn't just a fight—it's a clash of titans! We're going to be caught in the crossfire!"
The dock area erupted into chaos as people hurried to pack their belongings and flee to the other side of the island, fearing the impending destruction. Even if the town survived, the island itself might not.
Byakuya watched the commotion and instructed his soldiers, "Evacuate the injured and help the civilians escape. Make sure there's no stampede."
One soldier saluted and asked, "Admiral Byakuya, should we take the captured pirates with us as well?"
Byakuya hesitated briefly before replying, "No. Leave them here."
"Yes, sir!" The soldiers began efficiently carrying out Byakuya's orders, evacuating the residents and ensuring order.
Meanwhile, Byakuya stood alone at the dock, waiting patiently to see what Mihawk and the Red-Haired Pirates had planned.
Dragon, observing from the shadows, chose not to leave either.
If Mihawk and Shanks attacked Byakuya, he was prepared to reveal his connection to Byakuya and the Revolutionary Army, risking everything to save him.
For a moment, Loguetown—a small and seemingly insignificant town—had become the gathering point for some of the world's most influential figures.
