Chapter 54: Chapter 54: The Crushing Defeat of Blissgra and Holdem's Awakening
BANG!
Blissgra smirked as he dropped Holdem onto the ground like a sack of potatoes. He looked at Jack and chuckled, unfazed by the beastly pirate's intimidating glare.
"Sorry about that, Jack," Blissgra said with a grin. "I might've gone a little overboard with Holdem here. But hey, he had the guts to challenge me, so he kinda brought this on himself, don't you think?"
Before Jack could respond, Blissgra turned to King, who stood silently on the sidelines.
"Hey, King!" Blissgra called out. "If I'm not mistaken, Jack's still just a regular Shinuchi, isn't he? According to the rules of the Beasts Pirates, I can challenge him anytime I want, right?"
King sighed and gave a reluctant nod. "Technically, yes. But I'd advise against it. Jack's not like the rest of you."
"Not like us?" Blissgra's voice rose with indignation. "What makes him so special? Just because he was lucky enough to eat an Ancient Zoan Devil Fruit? That's no reason for Kaido-sama to favor him so much! I've got a Devil Fruit now too, and I don't think I'm any less capable than he is! I'll prove it! I, Blissgra, will surpass Jack and become the strongest!"
As the tension crackled in the air, Jack bent down to inspect Holdem, who groaned in pain.
"I'm sorry, Jack-sama," Holdem said weakly, his voice full of shame. "I've disgraced you…"
"Oh, shut up," Jack snapped, his tone a mix of exasperation and irritation. "Are you auditioning for some sappy drama? 'Cause I'm not some lovesick noble, and you're definitely not a damsel in distress."
Holdem blinked, confused by the reference, but Jack didn't give him time to respond. With a loud smack to the back of Holdem's head, Jack barked, "Don't even tell me… Blissgra challenged me, and you thought charging in headfirst was a brilliant idea, didn't you?"
Holdem winced but nodded sheepishly. "I just couldn't stand his arrogance… He was just a squad leader like me before! And now, just because he ate one of those synthetic Devil Fruits and survived, he's acting like he owns the place!"
"Synthetic Devil Fruits?" Jack muttered, his eyes narrowing as realization dawned. So that's what had changed about Blissgra. The Beasts Pirates had been experimenting with artificial Devil Fruits for years, though the success rate was abysmal. Most who dared to eat them ended up dead. To Jack's knowledge, very few had survived the ordeal—the warden of Udon Prison, Babanuki, being one of the rare exceptions.
Blissgra's survival was a miracle in itself.
"Hey, Jack!" Blissgra's confident voice cut through Jack's thoughts. "Fight me! Prove you're worthy of Kaido-sama's recognition!"
Jack stood up and turned to Holdem, his expression softening slightly.
"Don't hold a grudge against Blissgra. He held back, or you wouldn't even be breathing right now. Losing to him isn't shameful, his strength came at a cost. Just rest and recover… I'll make sure he gets a matching set of injuries to keep you company."
Jack strode toward Blissgra, each step reverberating with unyielding resolve. Blissgra's grin widened, his excitement growing as the battle drew near.
"I'll show Kaido-sama that you're nothing special, Jack! Today, I'll prove I'm the stronger one!" Blissgra declared.
Jack sidestepped a stray droplet of spit from Blissgra's rant and raised an eyebrow.
"You've got a lot of pent-up resentment for someone I've barely spoken to. Did I steal your lunch or something?"
Blissgra scoffed. "No, you didn't. But I've had enough of Kaido-sama's favoritism. You're arrogant, overconfident, and unworthy of becoming one of the All-Stars! Last time, if I hadn't gone behind your back and sent reinforcements, we'd all be dead! You're reckless, Jack, and someone like you doesn't deserve the spotlight!"
Jack paused, piecing it all together. So that's why Blissgra was so worked up. It wasn't just him. Plenty of the Beasts Pirates resented Jack's meteoric rise. Last year, during the Fire Festival, he'd defeated a prominent Shinuchi, fueling rumors that he was destined to become the third All-Star. While Kaido's protection kept most challengers at bay, Blissgra had clearly decided to take matters into his own hands.
"You've got guts, I'll give you that," Jack said, his voice calm but firm. "But let me make one thing clear. I'm here because I earned it. And since you seem so eager to prove yourself, I'll grant you the honor of a proper beating."
With a flick of his wrist, Jack swung his massive spiked club. Blissgra didn't flinch, his left arm—or rather, the oversized gorilla fused to it—reaching out to grab the weapon.
CLANG!
The gorilla caught the club, and Blissgra smirked triumphantly.
"See? I told you! My strength has increased tenfold thanks to my Devil Fruit!"
Jack's lips curled into a faint smile. "Strength isn't everything. How's your durability?"
Before Blissgra could respond, his gorilla let out a pained whimper, struggling to hold back tears. Blissgra's confident façade shattered as he screamed, "ARGH! That hurts! That hurts so much!"
With a single powerful swing, Jack sent Blissgra flying. The arrogant challenger hit the ground with a resounding THUD, unconscious. Jack glanced at the gorilla, which scratched its head in confusion before slumping down in defeat.
Jack kicked Blissgra's limp body toward Holdem.
"Hey, Holdem, looks like you've got some company now. Try not to fight over who's the bigger loser."
As Jack walked away, he couldn't help but reflect on his journey. Blissgra had potential, but he was nowhere near ready to take Jack on. If Jack wanted to claim the top, he'd need more than raw strength. He'd need to keep growing—faster, stronger, and smarter.
Holdem, meanwhile, stared at Blissgra's unconscious form, a dangerous thought creeping into his mind.
"Maybe… if I ate one of those synthetic Devil Fruits… I wouldn't be a burden to Jack-sama anymore…"
