One Piece: My Name is Jack, I'm Very Resistant to Beating

Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Missions and Subordinates

For the past few days, Yamato had been in a foul mood, and Black Maria seemed distracted as well. Both of them had been sent back to Onigashima by Kaido after a drunken escapade, much to the frustration of both Jack and Kaido.

The duo had been incessantly clamoring to join Jack on his sea voyages, wearing down everyone's patience. They even tried to intimidate some underlings into taking them back to Kuri, but their plans were cut short when King returned.

While Yamato typically had a "loving" father-daughter dynamic with Kaido that involved exchanging blows with spiked clubs, she wasn't nearly as bold when it came to King. Black Maria, on the other hand, had a charm that made her popular among the Beasts Pirates, but even she clammed up when faced with King.

As soon as they saw him, both Yamato and Black Maria bolted without a second thought. Perhaps the sight of King beating Jack to a pulp years ago had left a lasting impression. Yamato, who feared nothing and no one, seemed to have an inexplicable dread of King, going as far as holding her breath when he was around. As for Black Maria—nicknamed "social butterfly" by Jack—she couldn't even muster a word in King's presence.

The psychological trauma from witnessing Jack's bloodied posterior back then, combined with King's masked and ominous presence, had carved a deep fear into their hearts.

"Jack!"

Kaido's booming voice snapped Jack out of his thoughts.

"Since you're conveniently heading out to sea, I've got a mission for you," Kaido announced, tossing a stack of papers onto the table.

"You're aware of our weapon factories in Wano, right? Over the years, they've churned out a decent number of weapons. The quality still leaves something to be desired, but sales have been solid."

Kaido paused, his tone growing darker. "Recently, though, a few nations have been taking our shipments without paying up. And I'm very angry about it. You know what needs to be done, don't you?"

Jack swallowed hard.

Kaido, why are you looking at me like that? You're making me think of a certain guy…

But Kaido wasn't done.

"Those nations need to be brought under the Beasts Pirates' control. With your strength, that shouldn't be a problem."

"And if those foolish kings can't see the big picture? Replace them with someone who can."

Kaido's eyes gleamed. "Your main targets this time are two pirate crews. Both are backed by powerful kingdoms from the New World. Their captains are strong—too strong for us to deal with while our forces are tied up elsewhere. That's where you come in, Jack.

"Take them out. Prove your worth. If you can complete this mission, no one will question your promotion to All-Star."

Kaido stood, his massive hand landing heavily on Jack's shoulder.

"I'm giving you four years. That's more than enough time to deal with those nations and the pirate crews. Prove yourself."

Four years? Hah! You underestimate me.

If it weren't for you holding me back, I'd have thrashed King ages ago. Five years you've kept me cooped up on Onigashima! Five years! Do you have any idea how I've survived? Training with Yamato and Black Maria, sneaking peeks at the aunties in the bathhouse… Actually, now that I think about it, it hasn't been so bad.

Jack cleared his throat. "Don't worry, Kaido-sama. I'll settle everything in far less than four years. I'll make a name for myself on the seas—one they'll fear!"

Kaido grinned, his laughter booming. "Wororororororo! Good! I look forward to hearing of your success!"

Kaido, could you not laugh like that? It makes me think of a mushroom-picking little girl. It's kind of unsettling.

A knock interrupted their conversation.

"Come in," Kaido called.

The door opened, revealing a tall, lean figure with long black hair and a strikingly handsome face. He wore a floral shirt and green pants that screamed "peacock," completing the flamboyant look.

"This is Rim. Meet your new subordinate," Kaido said.

Jack frowned slightly as he studied Rim. He didn't know much about the man, other than that he'd joined the Beasts Pirates two years ago and was an exceptional swordsman. Rim had once captured dozens of Wano samurai on his own, making him one of the stronger Shinuchi.

But…

That cough…

Rim's dark circles and chronic cough were impossible to ignore. Jack suddenly recalled their first meeting—when they'd both been caught peeping at the bathhouse aunties. Rim's hacking cough had given them away, and they'd been chased for hours.

Rim greeted Jack, his voice hoarse and strained. "Cough… Jack… pleasure to work with you… cough…"

Jack forced a smile. "Ah… Rim, nice to meet you. Why don't you sit down and rest for a bit?"

Kaido dismissed Rim to wait on the Mammoth. Once the door closed, he sighed.

"Rim's talent is undeniable. Even with a hereditary blood condition, he's one of the best in the Tobiroppo. His navigation skills are unmatched, which is why I'm assigning him to you. He's got about five good years left in him, so you don't need to worry about him dying on the job."

Kaido leaned back, his tone softening. "Also, one of the pirate crews you're targeting has ties to Rim's past. Consider this his chance for revenge."

Five years, huh? What a waste of talent, Jack thought.

Kaido clapped his hands. "Your ship, the Mammoth, is ready. I've personally ensured it's stocked with over a hundred crew members, including some promising young talents. Train them well."

The Mammoth? Seriously? Just because I ate the Mammoth fruit doesn't mean my ship has to match. What's wrong with something like the Titanic? I don't even care if it sinks—I won't drown anyway!
