Chapter 4: Set a Small Goal First, Raise a Few Brides
Seeing the check-in task's time requirement, Reno rolled his eyes in exasperation. He felt this system shouldn't be called a check-in system but rather a prison system. What kind of check-in requires you to stay somewhere for an entire month?
Thinking of this, Reno grumbled at the system, "System, what happens if a check-in task triggers and I don't want to do it?"
Tasks involving people were fine, as they could be completed instantly. However, check-ins requiring being in a specific location or under a particular faction took forever. If he was assigned a task to check in at an enemy's lair, would he really have to stay there for half a month or even a full month?
[Host, don't worry. You can skip check-in tasks if you don't want to do them. Uncompleted tasks will accumulate, and you can complete them whenever you feel like it. They also won't affect the triggering of future tasks.]
Hearing the system's explanation, Reno felt relieved. Thankfully, this wasn't one of those systems that forced you to complete tasks. This system seemed quite user-friendly!
Accumulating tasks meant he could choose when to complete them. If he triggered a task involving an enemy's lair and didn't feel strong enough to survive there, he could wait until he was stronger to complete it.
While Reno was conversing with the system, the Roger Pirates' ship approached, stopping a few meters away from the wooden plank he was sitting on.
Reno also noticed the pirate ship coming closer and saw Rayleigh and Roger standing at the bow, looking at him. Without knowing their intentions, it was better to stay cautious and listen to what they had to say.
Roger, seeing Reno—a small boy who had survived a shipwreck without crying or panicking, even managing to catch his own fish to eat—had initially wanted to see if the boy would beg for rescue to satisfy his quirky sense of humor. But judging from the situation, it seemed his fun was about to be ruined.
Thinking this, Roger sighed and asked reluctantly, "Kid, why didn't you call out for help when you saw a ship coming?"
Hearing Roger's question, Reno sneered and replied disdainfully, "If it were a Navy or merchant ship, I would definitely have asked for help. But you're pirates. How would I know what your intentions are?"
"What if you came over just to capture me and sell me off? Asking for your help would be walking straight into a trap!"
Reno said this on purpose. While the Roger Pirates weren't detailed much in the anime, a crew capable of producing the Pirate King probably wouldn't stoop to selling him. He just wanted to pique their interest.
The reason Reno wanted to grab their attention was to stay on their ship and complete tasks. Even if he didn't try, Roger would likely save him, but they might just drop him off at the next island.
To stay on the ship, he needed to make himself interesting and valuable.
After all, while Roger's crew wasn't necessarily evil, they weren't saints either. Reno vividly remembered the time Roger destroyed a country over a crewmate.
Being a hardcore fan of One Piece in his past life, Reno had forgotten some details about the story over time. But after gaining unlimited mental clarity, he remembered every scene and piece of lore he'd consumed, including Roger's background.
"Ha ha ha ha—hic!"
"You're quite the funny little guy!"
Roger's laughter drew the rest of the crew to the ship's railing, where they watched Reno with interest.
Roger laughed for a long time before stopping, then spoke disdainfully, "I'm Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King! Why would I bother with such petty tricks? You look injured. Come aboard and let Crocus take a look at you first."
Hearing the term Pirate King, Reno froze on the spot. Roger was already the Pirate King? Could it be they were just returning from Raftel?
Thinking of this, Reno glanced around the ship for Shanks and Buggy but didn't see them.
If the story had progressed this far, the Roger Pirates would likely disband soon. He desperately hoped it would happen after he finished his tasks!
Roger, seeing Reno frozen, assumed the boy was intimidated by his title and explained, "Kid, while we may be notorious pirates, we do have principles. We wouldn't do anything to harm a little guy like you, so relax and come aboard."
Since Roger had said this much, Reno figured it was enough and decided not to waste any more time. He climbed the rope ladder they had let down.
He didn't use his telekinesis to fly aboard, as even though he trusted they wouldn't harm him, it was better to stay cautious.
After boarding, Reno was taken by the ship's doctor, Crocus, to a room for treatment. The rest of the crew dispersed, returning to their tasks.
Though curious about the boy, they all knew it wasn't the right time to ask questions. For battle-hardened pirates, it was easy to tell Reno had serious injuries.
After examining Reno, Crocus looked astonished and said, "Nine external wounds, and three broken ribs. It's a miracle you're still alive!"
"Your injuries are three days old. How did a four- or five-year-old survive alone in such a harsh sea?"
Reno glanced at the old man without replying. It wasn't that he didn't want to answer, but there was no way he could explain it. Was he supposed to say the body's previous owner had died once before?
Even if he said it, no one would believe him!
So staying silent was the best choice.
Seeing Reno's reluctance to answer, Crocus didn't press further and began treating his wounds and resetting his broken ribs.
Earlier, Crocus had given Reno a bowl of medicinal soup, which dulled the pain. That was probably the anesthetic of this world.
While being treated, Reno finally had a moment to think about his future.
Before, all he'd thought about was surviving. Now that he was out of immediate danger, it was time to plan ahead.
The check-in tasks would likely require constant travel. Joining any faction would limit his growth, so that idea was out.
Being only five years old, Reno had powerful telekinesis but lacked physical strength and stamina. He could start as a bounty hunter, completing tasks to enhance his strength.
Once he was stronger, he could decide his path. But that was a concern for the future.
For now, the priority was to increase his strength. And if he had spare time, why not rescue some damsels in distress and enjoy some character-building moments?
After all, this world wasn't lacking in lost heroines. Boa Hancock, Nico Robin, Nami, Rebecca—these were all famous beauties in the future!
Set a small goal first: raise a few brides!
Of course, improving his strength was secondary. Playing the long game was Reno's true goal. Though he'd never admit it!
"Heh heh heh..."
Imagining a blissful future surrounded by lovely women, Reno couldn't help but laugh.
Seeing him chuckle to himself, Crocus worriedly thought: Did I treat this kid's injuries so poorly that I broke his mind?
