Chapter 3: The First Check-in Target Appears
Reno raised his hand in bewilderment. He had braced himself for excruciating pain during the fusion of his psychic abilities and mental energy, but the process turned out to be surprisingly simple.
Now, his body contained a new source of energy, and his mind felt sharper—easily a hundred times more agile than before.
This newfound energy was entirely under his control. Having seen Tatsumaki wield similar powers, Reno understood how to use it instinctively; it only required some practice to fully master.
Staring up at the vibrant, multicolored sky, Reno clenched his fists and muttered to himself, "I'll familiarize myself with these abilities first. Once I'm used to them, I'll find a nearby island."
Since his abilities drained mental energy—which he now possessed infinitely—mastering them would allow him to leave this endless ocean and search for land or a ship.
To avoid further strain on his injured body, Reno decided not to immediately envelop himself in psychic power to float. Instead, he practiced with the water around him.
Nearby seawater began to rise in floating orbs, each surrounded by a greenish glow—his psychokinetic energy.
(Let's call this power psychokinesis to keep it consistent; otherwise, readers unfamiliar with it might get confused.)
Once he had mastered levitating seawater, Reno turned his attention to the fish swimming nearby. Using psychokinesis, he lifted several fish of various sizes out of the water and suspended them in mid-air.
After experimenting with levitating living creatures, Reno released the energy but kept a few appetizing-looking fish close. He was starving and had no choice but to eat sashimi for sustenance, as there were no islands or ships nearby.
As Reno bit into a fish, he grimaced and muttered, "Raw fish without seasoning is absolutely disgusting!"
Despite the fish's slimy, unpleasant taste, Reno forced himself to eat. If he didn't, he feared he might pass out from hunger—something that could be fatal in the open sea.
One rogue wave or even a passing predator could spell the end for him.
Unbeknownst to Reno, a massive pirate ship was slowly approaching from about a kilometer away.
On the deck, two men stood near the bow: one with a long beard holding a telescope, and the other a blonde-haired man watching him in confusion.
It was none other than the Roger Pirates, with Captain Roger and Silvers Rayleigh on deck.
Rayleigh's puzzled expression stemmed from Roger's abrupt decision to change the ship's course a minute earlier, instructing the crew to head toward this seemingly random spot.
Roger, holding a telescope and peering ahead, offered no explanation for his actions, leaving Rayleigh no choice but to ask, "Roger, what exactly are you looking at up there?"
Lowering the telescope, Roger finally responded, "It's nothing special, just a stranded kid."
He handed the telescope to Rayleigh. "That boy's quite interesting. Take a look, and you'll see."
Skeptical, Rayleigh took the telescope and focused on the direction Roger indicated. Sure enough, he spotted a small child sitting on a plank of wood, gnawing on a fish nearly as large as himself.
Rayleigh's mouth twitched in exasperation. "Only you would find something like this entertaining."
Roger chuckled, shaking his head. "You're missing the point. That boy looks about four or five, yet he's managed to survive a shipwreck, catch a fish nearly his size, and eat it raw. Tell me that's not fascinating!"
Roger's observation was no accident. His Haki had detected Reno's presence, and upon seeing the boy through the telescope, he decided to save him immediately.
If it had been just an ordinary castaway, Roger would have rescued them but without this level of enthusiasm.
Rayleigh, now understanding Roger's intrigue, watched for a moment longer before commenting, "That kid's got potential. If he grows up, he could become a formidable force on the seas."
Rayleigh noted the boy's dry clothes and calm demeanor while eating, concluding that Reno must have been adrift for a considerable time.
Meanwhile, Reno had eaten about a third of the massive fish before stopping. Unable to eat another bite, he muttered, "They weren't kidding when they said people in the One Piece world have insane appetites. It's like my entire body is just a stomach!"
Suddenly, a familiar notification sounded in his mind.
[Ding! A new check-in task is available.]
[Please check the task details in the mission panel.]
Excited, Reno nearly leaped up but remembered his earlier mistake. Wincing at the thought of triggering his injuries again, he restrained himself.
"System, open the mission panel!"
He was thrilled because the appearance of a task likely meant the proximity of land or a ship.
[Mission 1: Board the Roger Pirates' ship and remain aboard for half a month to complete the check-in task.]
Reading the mission details, Reno scanned the ocean and spotted a black dot several hundred meters away, steadily approaching him. It seemed to be heading directly for his location.
The thought of the powerful pirates aboard that ship made their discovery of him unsurprising.
Reno decided to stay put and await the ship's arrival while contemplating his next move.
The task required him to board the ship and find a way to stay for the specified half-month duration.
He had initially assumed check-ins would be instant but was now faced with time-based challenges that significantly increased the difficulty.
"System," Reno asked, "are all check-in tasks this long?"
[Check-in durations vary by target. The longest are location-based, followed by faction-based, and then individual-based tasks.]
Location Check-in: One month
Faction Check-in: Half a month
Individual Check-in: Instantaneous
