Chapter 71: The Ender
Raphael felt his consciousness return to his physical body, with energy surging through him. His time spent with the dragons was short, but incredible.
But now, he had larger problems to face. As he felt the powers of the red flaming armour flowing through him and the two white and black blades flaming in his hands, Emperor Joshua came charging towards him.
At first, Raphael went on the defensive. Taking a step back from the man, lest he was poked by his golden spear. But as the man stepped in, Raphael underestimated the range of his weapon.
A thrust of the spear crashed into his shoulder, sending a jolt of pain through his body.
Luckily, the armour was undamaged.
"Where's your arrogance now!" The Emperor shouted as he charged forward again; his golden wings seemed to be aiding him in speed as he flapped them behind him with every approach.
Raphael managed to dodge to the side and swing out with a slash of his own, but the Emperor's wings curled around him like a defensive shield.
The twin blades crashed into the wings, but the strike was easily defended. Whatever essence the golden wings were made from was powerful.
Raphael struck again, and again, swinging with both flaming blades at the same time, but each strike was blocked by the Emperor's wings. Then, he thrust his spear towards again.
Just managing to block it with a crossed guard, Raphael was sent sliding backwards on the grass. He heard the sounds of battle ringing through the crowd around him, and with one glance, he could tell that his side was not winning.
There were already a few fallen students scattered around the school. Most were only knocked out, but others seemed to have wounds that were not survivable.
The Emperor looked at Raphael and laughed.
"You're starting to regret it now, aren't you?" The man shouted hysterically. "You and your foolish queens underestimated the three Divine Academies' strength, and now, you will pay for it!"
Emperor Joshua gripped hold of his spear with two hands and charged forward again. He thrust high, aimed towards the neck. A killing blow.
Raphael ducked beneath it and pivoted to the side before retreating to put a few meters between them.
With every passing second, he was being reminded that this was a battle to the death. Emperor Joshua had not come to a duel. He wished to take Raphael's life.
There's no time for playing around.
Raphael prepared the ability that he had spoken to Naomi and Rachael about.
Are you ready, my beautiful dragons?
As the emperor stalked towards him, the flames of Raphael's two swords began to increase and burn more rapidly. They continued that way until the flames danced brilliantly into the air like rising smoke.
Rachael and Naomi, become one.
Raphael smashed the two blades together, and at first, it seemed as though the weapons had been destroyed, and started to disappear. But that wasn't the case.
The white and black flames began to spiral around each other, casting a bright light onto the battlefield. No one dared to approach the rising power.
And only a few moments later, the two weapons began to materialise into something greater. They were no longer two separate blades that could be wielded with one hand each.
What now rested in Raphael's hand was a giant greatsword made from the flames of two dragons.
The gruesome greatsword was taller than Raphael himself.
The Ender. I will call this weapon, The Ender.
Others on the battlefield seemed to be distracted by its grandeur. They had never seen something so excellent in their lives. And nor had Emperor Joshua.
The man with golden wings watched Raphael with a shocked expression on his face. Others wouldn't notice, but at the sight of the blade, doubts began to fill the man's heart. However, he quickly swallowed that feeling and tightened the grip on his weapon.
"So, you've unlocked a new weapon?" Emperor Joshua taunted from across the field. "And so what?"
Then suddenly, the man started to flap the golden wings that potruded from his body.
"I have hardly shown you the true power of my birthright itself!"
With only a few flaps, Emperor Joshua began to soar into the air. The golden essence of his wings lit up the Five School Gardens and cast its glow across the brutality that unfolded beneath him.
From below, he looked like an angel, and with his spear in hand, it seemed as though he had come to deliver death.
Raphael simply watched him, The Ender resting in his two-handed grip.
The sounds of maniacal laughter filled the fields.
"You thought that these wings were just for show, you foolish ignorant child. Of course not. I am the Angel of the Skies!"
Then, without speaking any more words, Emperor Joshua lifted his spear above his head, preparing to throw it as though it were a javelin.
With his wings, the man had an advantage. He could soar out of range and strike from afar, minimising the risks of taking damage incredibly.
But Raphael would not let him do such a thing. Before the man could release his spear, Raphael charged his blade backwards.
He kept it there for a second, feeling the black and white flames grow in power. Emperor Joshua hesitated for a few moments in confusion.
"What are you doing? I told you already, your blade can not hit me from there."
It did not matter to Raphael. He did not intend for the blade to hit him.
With his sword held behind him in a readied position, he stepped forward with a confident crouched step.
And then, he swung the greatsword with all his might.
The blade, of course, did not reach his opponent...
But the flaming arc of white and black power did.
It erupted from the blade violently and crashed through the air like lightning. The sound was heard by all people within a ten-mile radius.
The strike moved too fast, and Emperor Joshua was unable to block it. It met no resistance as it crashed into him. The Ender's strike tore the man in half like paper.
Even after slicing the man into two bloody halves, the strike continued, cutting through the clouds itself.
The students on the Battlefield looked up as the rain of blood poured down on them, their faces twisted with disbelief. They could not believe that Emperor Joshua had been killed so quickly.
Once again, they had doubted the strength of Raphael Brooks, Son of the Dragon.
