North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 577: Returning to the Homicide Team

After having lunch, Jimmy and Mahong returned to the office.

In Jimmy's impression, Mahong typically wasn't concerned with gossip. The fact that he knew so much about the White-collar Team's matters suggested that news had already spread in the field office.

Mahong is actually very proud. If it weren't for his psychological issues leading to a divorce from his ex-wife, with his child leaving with her, he wouldn't have agreed to move from Chicago to the Manhattan office in New York.

Despite his pride, he's not a stickler for rules. Jimmy helped him with a small matter in Chicago, and from that incident, you could see that, while he appears straightforward, deep down, he's definitely not entirely good—perhaps not totally bad, but at least morally gray.

It's rare to see him have particularly close relationships with others, but he also doesn't offend anyone. A person like this wouldn't truly be so well-informed, knowing everything; it can only mean that news had thoroughly spread.

Because he's also about to return to the field department, he can't make any extraneous moves now, so for the moment, he isn't able to wander around gathering information in the field. He can only pick up clues through casual encounters. However, it seems very likely that he'll return to the White-collar Team; Diana's pregnancy is the biggest opportunity.

With Diana pregnant, she naturally can't go on field assignments frequently. She's likely to be assigned to handle internal tasks like intelligence processing within the team. Having only Jones on field assignments is definitely not enough, and he can conveniently supplement the White-collar Team.

Let's wait a bit more. Once there's news, he can communicate and interact with Jones and probe for more information about their team.

Jimmy tidied up his desk in the office. He had been in this office for almost a year, and honestly, he really liked this independent office space.

Over such a long time, there was quite a lot of stuff in this office. Jimmy needed to organize things properly, with some being handed over to Isabel, while his own belongings needed to be packed up to be moved to the new office later.

In the evening, Jimmy received a call from Peter. After kissing Nia, he got dressed and left home, heading to the place Peter had arranged.

Peter didn't choose a bar or restaurant today but Central Park, which wasn't far from Jimmy's apartment. It seemed that what he wanted to say wasn't convenient with people around.

Jimmy found Peter sitting on a bench by the lake in Central Park, with a six-pack of canned beer beside him.

Peter: "Hey, you came pretty fast. Have a seat."

Peter handed Jimmy a can of beer, and Jimmy took it and pulled the tab: "Why so free today?"

Peter: "I've been quite free these past few days. After getting out of prison, I suddenly feel that life is quite nice now."

Jimmy chuckled, took a sip of beer, "If you want to drink, you could go to a bar."

Peter: "It's quieter here. Cheers."

The two clinked their cans, drank the beer, and Peter said, "Thanks."

Jimmy: "No need to thank me. You didn't do it, and you shouldn't bear the consequences of the mistake."

Peter: "You know that's not what I'm referring to."

Jimmy: "I know, but as long as the result is good, that's enough. No need to dwell on things here. You should thank Neil."

Peter: "He told me, even though I don't know how you managed it... Cheers."

Peter clinked his beer with Jimmy's again and drank the beer in the can in one go.

Jimmy had no choice but to keep up, "What's your plan now?"

Peter: "I will catch him, I definitely will."

Jimmy looked at Peter in surprise, wondering if he had no idea he was being transferred. Did Hughes not talk to him at all?

After considering for a moment, Jimmy decided not to interfere with his arrangements: "How's your team doing?"

Peter: "I haven't returned to the office yet, so I'm not sure. But Jones and Dian are both very experienced; it should be fine."

Jimmy: "Hmm, that's good. You've suddenly been away for over a month; who knows what kind of mess the team has become. By the way, have you seen Hughes since getting out?"

Peter: "No, why?"

Jimmy: "You should meet him. You know he's helped you a lot."

Peter nodded, opened another can of beer, and handed it to Jimmy, "How about you? Planning to come back?"

Jimmy chuckled, "I still don't know. Just last week, as the main speaker, I held a press conference, and honestly, it felt pretty good."

Peter: "Are you planning to stay over there?"

Jimmy: "Let's see how it goes. If OPR doesn't agree, I certainly can't return to the field. The violation was quite severe."

Peter: "Need me to ask around for you?"

Jimmy waved his hand, "No need, let things take their course. I've been in the Manhattan office for just a few years and already became a Senior Agent. It's good to settle in a different department for a while. The leaders surely have their reasons. I'll talk with Mahong and the others, and if I truly have to go back, I can't avoid having him coordinate."

Peter nodded, "Yeah, cases in familiar fields are better. So, you've been in the Public Affairs Office for almost a year and only just started being the spokesperson?"

Jimmy: "It's already pretty quick. Initially, they planned for me to consider it after a year."

-----------------

The six-pack of beer slowly got finished. Jimmy and Peter came to the roadside to hail a taxi. After sending Peter off in the cab, Jimmy headed back towards the apartment, which was just two streets away.

After chatting for a while, Jimmy was certain that Hughes and the others had arranged everything clearly for Peter but never consulted with him throughout, not even notifying him in advance about a transfer to DC.
