Chapter 577: Back to the Homicide Team (Part 2)

Peter spent five or six weeks in prison, and throughout the entire process, no one talked to him about anything other than the case. I reckon Elizabeth, Jones, and Diana might visit Peter, but absolutely nobody knew about Hughes' arrangements. Jimmy never discussed his work with anyone else, only Neil Cavrey knew that Jimmy finally made a deal with the federal prosecutor.

So theoretically, it was Neil who told Peter that Jimmy made a deal with the prosecutor, and then Peter inferred that Jimmy did something, which led to him asking Jimmy out for a beer.

Peter has been out of prison for a few days now, and hasn't contacted Hughes, not knowing what he's thinking. Before, Hughes was implicated and retired because of what he did, and he hasn't contacted Hughes since being released.

Furthermore, what's Hughes thinking? They've already decided on Peter's future steps, so at least they should have contacted him beforehand, whether it was Hughes himself or the management stepping up; these things should definitely be arranged in advance to better handle the follow-up.

Jimmy's pondering over all this nonsense as he heads home to rest.

-----------------

Two days later, Ruiz called to invite Jimmy for drinks at a bar. It's rare for Ruiz to be so talkative recently. Jimmy still invited him to his own bar, where they could sit outside and drink if nothing was up or go to a small room to chat if there was business, very convenient.

When Jimmy was waiting at the bar for Ruiz, he didn't expect Mahong to show up with him. This looked like it wasn't a small matter. Jimmy asked Woody to bring drinks and snacks, and the three of them went straight to the small room.

Jimmy: "Rare, indeed, you two actually came over together for drinks. Let's talk later."

After Woody arranged for the drinks and cups to be delivered, Jimmy poured drinks for everyone and raised his cup to take a sip before speaking: "What brings you two here together?"

Ruiz glanced at Mahong and then looked at Jimmy: "Hughes chatted with me yesterday, and today Dave reached out to me too."

Jimmy quickly chimed in: "Congratulations, congratulations, looks like you're getting promoted to supervisor."

Ruiz wasn't annoyed at being interrupted by Jimmy, reached out for a pistachio and peeled it, "Mahong was also asked for a talk."

Jimmy looked at Mahong: "Ah? Why?"

Mahong: "To get in touch with more departments."

Jimmy took a cookie and put it in his mouth, after eating it he said: "Looks like this time the changes are much larger. Ruiz, what's your plan exactly?"

Ruiz: "Alright, the result is Mahong will replace Peter, I'm moving up, David will take over my position, and you will return to the Homicide Team."

Jimmy was shocked, "The Homicide Team got disbanded?"

Ruiz nodded: "You're still acting for the Homicide Team, but we'll assign you a newcomer."

Jimmy: "This change is quite significant, when's it happening?"

Ruiz: "About a month later, specifically, you'll have to wait for the notice. Currently, it's just a general arrangement, whether we can proceed according to the plan we'll have to see."

Jimmy: "Mahong, you're going into art crime... can you manage?"

Mahong: "Never done it before, but it's an opportunity."

Jimmy understood what this opportunity meant, the cases in the White Collar Team mostly involved the wealthy, museums, artworks, galleries, and some were related to companies and securities business. Compared to other teams, they have more external contacts, and at a higher level.

Most of Peter's connections were accumulated during his various case works and collaborations with others, and given these cases, it's easy to come in contact with people connected to the higher-ups in the FBI. Correspondingly, there are many opportunities to earn favors while handling cases.

Compared to the Homicide Team, the White Collar Team is obviously a bit higher internally. If Mahong takes over Peter's post, that would be considered a better position in the internal reassignment.

Jimmy looked around at Ruiz and Mahong, both of them looked relaxed, holding their glasses while watching Jimmy daze off.

Jimmy: "Seems like your positions are quite good, by the way, Ruiz, you mentioned earlier David will take over your position?"

Ruiz: "Yeah, that's the current plan. David did quite well in the Anti-Terrorism Team, and he's very competent in the Homicide Team as well. It's just the right time to lift him up during this adjustment, should be no problem."

Jimmy said after taking a sip of his drink: "I remember David is just a Senior Agent, right?"

Mahong continued: "Yeah, this time he can smoothly promote to Supervisory Special Agent."

Jimmy: "What about you guys? I didn't pay much attention before."

Ruiz: "I've been a Supervisory Special Agent for a while, Mahong was promoted after being temporarily assigned to Chicago last time and returned, so rank is not a problem. But you'll have to wait a bit longer, last time being promoted to Senior Agent was a special case, you'll have to wait a few years to upgrade."

Jimmy: "Got it, looks like I'll be in the Homicide Team for a few years."

Ruiz: "Yeah, telling you this early is just to give you a mental preparation, last time promoting to Senior Agent within two years was a bit too fast."

Jimmy: "Understandable, I know my qualifications aren't enough for a promotion now. When will you guys probably take over?"

Ruiz: "As I said earlier, about a month later, but David needs to come over to my side in advance to get familiar with what we're supposed to do."

Jimmy: "Mahong, what about you?"

Mahong: "Wait for the notice from above, it's still unclear for now."

Jimmy: "OK, looks like it'll be busy and chaotic for the next month-plus. Let's drink, I bet you'll be crazy busy in the coming days."

-----------------

Finally, Jimmy received reliable information, and he could know his place in advance rather than considering where to move only when Mrs. Mason informed him.
