Chapter 164: The Price of Disrespect
"Charlatans like you are everywhere. Pretending to be gods, deceiving fools. The only surprising thing is that you managed to gain control of a nation."
The envoy of the Land of Stars sneered.
"But to cut off our tribute? To even demand freedom from payments? That is bold. I advise you to follow the rules, and not only continue your payments, but increase them by another twenty percent. Otherwise, if the army of the Land of Stars marches, how long could your so-called divine nation stand? The Land of Ancestors is weak, the Land of Ancestors is crippled—you could not even form a proper army."
Mockery dripped from his words, unaware that he was already holding a one-way ticket to hell.
"Impudent! How dare you speak so to the gods?"
The emperor of the Land of Ancestors and the emperor of the Land of Ancestors trembled with fear. They had seen Kaede's true might with their own eyes. This was no fraud—this was divinity.
A single move had killed thousands. If a charlatan wielded such power, then what else could he be called but a god?
"Gods?" The envoy sneered again. "He is nothing but a fraud. Only fools believe in him. Allow me to expose him and see his true face—!"
But as he stepped forward, the blood drained from his face.
Before the stunned eyes of the court, crimson seeped from every pore of his body, flowing out in streams. His blood gathered in the air, twisting back into the shape of a man, a grotesque mockery of his form.
"You… you…"
The envoy still lived, but his soul wished for death. Agony tore through every fiber of his being, as though even his spirit was being ripped apart. His body shook with cold, as if stripped bare and thrown into an ice cellar.
"I told you," Kaede's voice was calm as death itself. "Those who show disrespect to the gods will be punished. You are the second to learn this lesson."
He had grown almost weary of fools who dared to test his bottom line. Even Otsutsuki Isshiki had fallen before him—what gave these mortals courage?
The envoy collapsed, his blood clone shattering into droplets that spattered across the floor. The stench of iron filled the hall.
"Remove this body. I do not wish to see it again. And prepare yourselves—soon, the Land of Stars will face divine punishment."
Kaede's order was final.
"Yes!"
The gathered rulers and ministers dropped to their knees, not daring to meet his eyes. Fear consumed them. To watch blood seep out of a man's pores while he remained alive, suffering a pain worse than death, was a terror beyond imagination.
When the chamber cleared, Kaguya finally turned to him.
"Using such methods… won't it drive them to rebellion?"
Her voice carried hesitation—at heart, she was still innocent, too kind to grasp the true nature of men.
"It will not. Not while they lack strength. Only when you display overwhelming power will they obey. In times of chaos, harsh measures are needed. Once unity and peace are secured, then you may show kindness, and they will revere you as a goddess."
Kaede's gaze was unwavering.
He understood well—Kaguya's Divine Tree alone could not make all bow. He would bear the role of tyrant, while she remained the benevolent goddess. With time, respect for her would only grow. Even if one day rebellion arose, it would not be against her.
"Very well," Kaguya nodded softly.
"And what of the Land of Stars? What will you do?"
"I will go there myself. If they submit, I will accept them. If not, they will cease to exist."
Kaede's voice was absolute. Those who followed him would prosper. Those who resisted would die.
"Good. But the Otsutsuki will come one day. When they learn Isshiki is dead, they will not sit idle. We must prepare. And the Divine Tree's fruit still needs time to ripen."
"I know your strength surpasses mine," Kaguya admitted. "If the fruit matures, then it should be yours. Eat it—you deserve it."
Kaede shook his head.
"No. That fruit belongs to you. I will not take it."
A rare smile curved Kaguya's lips.
"Truthfully… that day when Isshiki appeared, I panicked. He intended to sacrifice me to his tree, but I turned his ritual against him. In raw power, I could not match him. When you arrived… it felt as though a divine soldier had descended from the heavens. You saved my life. I… am grateful."
Her words left Kaede momentarily stunned.
He had never imagined that, in Kaguya's eyes, that moment had burned so deeply.
