Chapter 163: Defiance from the Land of Stars
Building statues, worshipping gods—none of that was a problem.
And merging with the Land of Ancestors? Even less of one. After all, their invasion had originally been for that very land. Now that they could join together as one new nation, they were more than pleased.
"Once this new country is established, governance will fall to us. As for you and the emperor, you will act as our aides. Do not worry—the purpose of gods descending into this world is to unify it, to end war, and to leave only peace."
Kaguya's voice was steady, yet she did not forget to tempt the emperor with promises of power.
Though he had surrendered authority, as one standing at the gods' side, his future influence would far surpass that of a mere small ruler. Once the entire world was unified, only he and his peers would remain close to divinity.
"Yes, we understand."
The emperor nodded without hesitation.
"Good. Spread the word quickly. I will soon return with the emperor of the Land of Ancestors and its army. I hope you remember what was promised today—if you break it, you will learn what true divine punishment means."
Kaede's cold warning lingered in the air. Then he and Kaguya vanished in an instant, carried away by his Sharingan's space-time ability.
To the people of the Land of Ancestors, the sight was proof—no mere humans could disappear like that. They truly were gods.
Back in the Land of Ancestors, the emperor rushed to meet them.
"Immortal!"
"What is it?"
Kaede frowned with disdain. This man was the epitome of weakness. Still, he no longer had much use for him, and Kaede could barely hide his irritation.
"The matter with the Land of Ancestors, they…"
"They've been dealt with. They will no longer invade. I told their emperor that their land will merge with yours, forming one new kingdom. Kaguya and I will rule it, while you act as our deputies. Do you understand?"
Kaede's tone was flat.
"Yes… yes, I understand."
The emperor agreed immediately. He knew he lacked the strength to protect his people. Relying on these two divine beings was his only path forward.
And so, under Kaede and Kaguya's direct supervision, the two nations fused into one. The people, far from resisting, were overjoyed—who would not want to live under the rule of gods?
Yet Kaede knew these were only two small nations. Beyond them, the world still held many others, including three powerful realms. Among them, the Land of Stars and the Land of Chains stood above the rest, stronger even than the Land of Ancestors had been. Fortunately, distance and smaller buffer states had kept them apart until now.
But once word spread that the Land of Ancestors and the Land of Ancestors had fused into one divine nation, the Land of Stars moved swiftly, sending envoys.
The envoy entered the grand hall arrogantly.
Kaede and Kaguya sat in the high seats, with the two emperors of the fused nation below them, and ministers ranked further down.
The envoy clasped his hands, but there was no reverence in his manner.
Kaguya glanced toward Kaede, who had handled most matters in recent days, while she remained the revered "goddess." The people treated Kaede with awe, and her with respect—exactly as Kaede had planned, hoping to alter her legacy in future generations.
The envoy's words cut through the chamber.
"Our lord sends his congratulations on your union. However, with two nations merging, complications arise. The Land of Ancestors always paid us tribute. Now that you have doubled your lands, naturally that tribute must increase by twenty percent. Surely this is acceptable?"
"Oh? Is this true?"
Kaede's eyes slid toward the emperor of the former Land of Ancestors.
"Yes," the man admitted. "Though it was not truly tribute—only passage fees. The Land of Stars controls ships we need. Each year we paid to lease them instead of building our own, which would have cost far more."
"I see. Then return to your master with this message."
Kaede's gaze turned sharp.
"From this day, no tribute or fees will be paid. Our divine nation will stand as the land of gods. If your master submits and joins us, he will share in our resources. But if he refuses, then divine punishment will fall upon him."
The envoy sneered.
"Divine punishment? Laughable. Do you think a few parlor tricks make you gods? Men like you are common in the Land of Stars."
