Chapter 426: Chapter 426: Run Away and See Where You Can Escape To
The haggard old face of the Third Kage immediately turned gloomy.
Daimyo Mansion!
Why?! Why would they do this?
"No, what are you trying to say in riddles? Just say it outright!"
Without thinking—or rather without processing the gravity of the situation—Koharu could only pace anxiously.
Seeing her frantic movements, Shinki said with a smirk, "I know one of them. He's from the Daimyo Mansion. His body was brought back to the ANBU, and some interesting things were unearthed."
"What? The Daimyo Mansion? How is that possible?!" Koharu exclaimed in disbelief.
"Shut up!"
Tsunade glared at her, clearly irritated. "Why can't you just be quiet for once?"
Even if you have no sense of reasoning, can't you at least stop talking when it's obvious enough?
"What's the reason?" Tsunade demanded.
Whether it was the Daimyo Mansion opposing Konoha or vice versa, Tsunade found it unbearable. For her, only a genuine cooperation between the village and the Daimyo could lead to mutual development—rather than constant deceit and opposition.
Shinki spread his hands, turned toward the Third Kage, and said pointedly, "In the past, important nobles in the Daimyo Mansion were assassinated one after another. This frightened the officials and nobles, leading them to seek refuge in the village. They only returned after things calmed down."
"The Daimyo Mansion wasn't satisfied with Konoha's investigation results, so they brought in outsiders to help. The findings enraged the Daimyo."
"This is information we unearthed from the corpses of the Daimyo's staff."
Bang!
Tsunade slammed the desk and shouted angrily, "Old man, don't tell me you had something to do with this!"
It was over. Koharu's face turned pale.
The Third Kage hesitated, his lips trembling before finally lowering his head.
"I did it. My intention was just to scare them, but I didn't expect Danzo to go so far. I also..."
"Enough!"
Tsunade didn't want to hear another word.
Still fuming, she pulled out the seal.
"I'm taking this. I'll go directly to the Daimyo Mansion to settle this. Old man, just wait for the results. I hope nothing happens to the village while I'm away."
"Shinki."
"I understand. I'll watch over everything," Shinki assured her with a nod.
The village had sent assassins after the nobles, causing the Daimyo's staff to retaliate. This ongoing cycle of back-and-forth attacks had shaken the very foundation of their alliance.
Tsunade couldn't stand it any longer.
Her disappointment in the Third Kage was palpable.
She refused to hand the seal back to him. Until this matter was resolved, the Third Kage was to remain a figurehead at best.
"Old man, this isn't just a reminder; it's a warning. While I'm gone, there must be no chaos in the village."
Before leaving, Tsunade made her stance abundantly clear.
"I've let things slide in the past, but that doesn't mean I'll continue to tolerate them."
"Yes, there won't be any chaos in the village. If there is, Shinki has full authority to handle it," the Third Kage coughed, offering his guarantee.
This declaration unsettled Koharu.
Because it meant Shinki could act against anyone, including her, if trouble arose.
It seemed the Daimyo's retaliation had shaken the Third Kage deeply.
"Hiruzen, why don't you explain?" Koharu asked hesitantly after Shinki and Tsunade left.
The Third Kage took a deep puff of his pipe and sighed.
"Explain what? Do you think Tsunade would listen? From the moment this news broke, we were finished. I didn't expect the Daimyo's retaliation to be so calculated. It's clear they've spent a lot of time gathering this evidence."
"Are we just going to sit back and wait for death?" Koharu asked, unwilling to accept the situation.
"Sit back and wait for death?" The Third Kage shook his head.
"It's not that dramatic. Tsunade won't implement harsh measures. At most, we'll be forced into retirement. Maybe it's time to go home and care for the next generation."
The punishment wouldn't be severe—at least, that's what the Third Kage believed.
After all, no one could make the influential families relinquish the wealth and power they had hoarded, nor could anyone force them to field their clansmen on the front lines.
In this situation, Tsunade's actions would be tempered by practicality.
However, this leniency wouldn't extend to Danzo.
Tsunade hated Danzo.
"Don't kid yourself, Koharu. Do you really think we'll keep our positions? Homura might stand a chance, but neither you nor I will."
The Third Kage still valued the stability of the village and had a moral baseline, unlike Koharu and Danzo.
As Tsunade and Shinki left, she said to him, "I know the old man well. He's selfish and power-hungry, but he values the village. He won't stir up trouble while I'm gone. Keep an eye on the others, especially Danzo. That old snake might try to escape."
The Third Kage wouldn't plead for Danzo, but neither would he want to see him punished severely. Likely, he'd tip Danzo off and let him escape.
And escape Danzo would need to, for once Tsunade returned after stabilizing the Daimyo, there'd be no mercy.
"I know. Honestly, I hope he runs away. It'll make things simpler," Shinki said, flexing his fingers.
He had waited long enough for this opportunity. It was time for Danzo to go.
"Don't make a mess," Tsunade cautioned.
She wouldn't stop Shinki. She couldn't stand Danzo either.
This old man had caused enough chaos. Did he think he could hide and evade responsibility forever?
Not a chance.
Besides, if someone didn't pay the price, how could they calm the Daimyo's fury?
