Chapter 424: Chapter 424: War Diverts Conflicts Among the People

The source of the rumors was finally uncovered. A man named Kaiyuan Goro had bribed several villagers to spread the news in various ways, but the trail ended abruptly.

"Has he been caught?"

"He's dead," Ying reported grimly. "His body was found with a kunai piercing his heart—precisely in the center. Judging by the clean cut, it must have been the work of a skilled ninja. This is not something an ordinary person could achieve."

Shinki frowned. "And what about the condition of the body?"

"It was severely damaged," Ying replied with a sigh. "It seems the perpetrators wanted to ensure no further evidence could be extracted."

The conclusion was clear—the culprits had anticipated being tracked and destroyed the body to cut off all leads.

Shinki waved his hand dismissively, handing the scroll back to Ying.

"Take this to the Hokage's office. Share everything you've found so far."

"Understood," Ying said, bowing before leaving.

Despite their efforts, the trail had gone cold. The Hokage would have to face this problem head-on, and Shinki couldn't help but feel a twinge of amusement at the thought.

When Shinki returned home that evening, he found Tsunade sitting on the sofa, her brow furrowed in thought.

"I'm surprised to see you here," Shinki teased. "I thought you'd be stuck in the Hokage's office for days."

Tsunade shot him a glare. "What, am I not allowed to come home? That old man is uncomfortable in the office, and I'm even more uncomfortable there."

She exhaled and leaned back. "The Hokage is planning to send the families who benefited from the misappropriated funds to the front lines. If nothing unexpected happens, they'll form the main force in the war against the Rock Village."

Shinki raised an eyebrow, impressed despite himself.

"Not a bad strategy," he remarked. "For all his flaws, the Hokage is incredibly resourceful."

The Hokage's plan served multiple purposes. By deploying the families who had benefited from the funds, he could reduce casualties among other ninjas, particularly civilian ones. This would help placate the general population.

Additionally, these families could gain merit and reputation on the battlefield. Even if the scandal couldn't be entirely covered up, their contributions might help mitigate the damage to their reputations.

"If the battle goes well, it could stabilize the situation. If it doesn't… well, things could get very ugly."

Tsunade nodded. "Exactly. It's a calculated risk, but at least he's taking action."

She continued, "Mitokado Homura has been appointed commander-in-chief for this war. The Hokage seems to think it's a way for him to earn merit and deflect public scrutiny."

Shinki smirked. "Smart move. But what about Danzo and Koharu?"

Tsunade shrugged. "Danzo's laying low, shutting his doors to visitors. As for Koharu… if she doesn't cause trouble, the Hokage might consider it a blessing."

Shinki chuckled at the thought. "Still, everything hinges on one thing—winning the war. If they lose, all of these arrangements will amount to nothing."

The Ninja World Reacts

Konoha's internal struggles were largely ignored by the outside world. The ongoing ninja war consumed the attention of every major village. Even Konoha's ally, the Cloud Village, showed little interest in the rumors.

The Cloud Village had its own concerns—namely, Konoha and the Sand Village's inaction.

"We've sent supplies and funds," the Raikage fumed. "Yet neither Konoha nor Sand has moved. What are they waiting for?"

If not for the intense pressure on their own front lines against the Mist and Rock Villages, the Raikage might have marched to Konoha himself to demand answers.

For now, the Cloud Village could only hope Konoha would honor their alliance and take action soon.
