Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Mysterious Alkaline Stone, Winning People Over with Virtue
Upon hearing the yellow-haired kid arrogantly claim that his ramen was awful and that there were great risks associated with it, making it unworthy of being served, the faces of the four, led by Hong Le, darkened, and they immediately exploded in anger.
Hong Le's own eyes twitched, and the fury in them seemed as if it would erupt at any moment.
Aunt Yile and Shangkui were also momentarily stunned.
They had personally tasted Hong Le's ramen, and as far as the texture was concerned, it was flawless and certainly deserving of the title of the best ramen. So why would Naruto, an experienced ramen enthusiast, give such a critique?
"Damn it, you little brat, what nonsense are you talking?"
"Do you even know what ramen is? Do you understand the essence of ramen?"
Seeing his younger brother nearly lose control and step in to act, Hong Le snorted and raised his hand, halting him. "Quiet."
The scene quieted, and everyone turned to look at Naruto, who remained confident.
Even Sasuke was watching, as from her objective perspective, although Aunt Yile's ramen was indeed good, the QQ texture [chewy texture] of Hong Le's ramen was unmatched. She couldn't understand why Naruto would say something like this.
"You little brat, as a temporary judge, you can share your thoughts. Tell me what the risks and shortcomings of my ramen are."
Hong Le managed to control himself in the first half of his sentence, but as the second half left his lips, the temperature in the ramen shop seemed to drop.
"But... if you can't explain, you'll have to face my wrath!"
Upon hearing this, Naruto smiled lightly. "You want me to point out the risks and shortcomings of your ramen?"
"Exactly!" Hong Le said in an unfriendly tone.
"Are you sure you can handle the consequences?" Naruto remained confident as he spoke.
"Are you messing with me, brat?"
Seeing that Hong Le was about to lose his temper, Naruto shrugged and said, "I can say whatever I want, but I see that you truly love cooking, so... if I say, hypothetically, that you'll never be able to cook again in your life, can you handle that?"
These words from Naruto were light, but they landed on the chefs present with the force of an atomic bomb.
Yet, Naruto didn't get any shock value. It was clear that his small stature and status made his words seem ridiculous to Hong Le and the others.
Hong Le had once left the Fire Country, journeying through the Gobi Mountains and Mingchuan, seeking out famous chefs, humbling himself to learn. He could claim that his culinary career was his life, and it wouldn't be an exaggeration.
Upon hearing this, Hong Le was momentarily taken aback. He stared at Naruto, not so much shocked, but more so angry.
But when he saw Naruto's unwavering gaze, Hong Le deflated. He didn't dare wager his life's work.
"I can't accept that, nor would I."
As Hong Le's momentum swiftly faded, Sasuke, Aunt Yile, Shangkui, and even Hong Le's disciple were all shocked.
"Master, he's just trying to scare you!"
"Yeah, Master, he's just a little brat, he doesn't understand ramen!"
"I don't understand ramen?" Naruto smiled. "I'm not exaggerating when I say that ramen may be your life, but ramen is also a part of mine. Aunt Yile can vouch for that."
"I'll vouch for him as a chef," Aunt Yile nodded, immediately pulling out her honors.
Upon hearing this, Hong Le's face changed, but he was extremely curious about the risks Naruto had mentioned.
In the end, he settled on a compromise. "Please, everyone, step outside for a moment. If this little brat can convince me, I'll give up the title of Konoha's first ramen enhancer."
"Master!"
"You can't agree to that, Master! Achieving the title of Konoha's best ramen enhancer is your dream!"
Naruto remained composed, smiling without a word.
Sasuke, although hesitant to leave, had already made a promise—she would follow Naruto as his subordinate for the next three months. She couldn't break her word on the very first day, could she? That would tarnish the honor of the Uchiha clan.
As everyone left, only Naruto and the burly, bald man remained in the ramen shop.
"You little brat, no one's here now. You can speak your mind, right?" Hong Le saw that Naruto's gaze was still steadfast and unflinching, and quietly muttered to himself.
"Don't panic, uncle, I'm saving you," Naruto said as he casually jumped into the kitchen, walking over to a pot of thick black sludge that Hong Le's disciple had previously prepared.
"You... What are you doing? That's my secret recipe!" Hong Le was caught off guard, realizing that Naruto was targeting the very formula he had worked so hard to create.
"Secret recipe? I'd call it a secret poison."
[ Ding, you received 30 points of shock value from Konoha villagers! ]
"You... what nonsense are you spouting?" Hong Le widened his eyes, staring at Naruto in disbelief.
Without responding, Naruto poured out the thick alkaline water, cleaned the pot's bottom from the blackened residue, and then refilled it with the alkaline liquid. He began to heat it up.
Hong Le watched as Naruto worked. The reason he didn't immediately stop Naruto was because he was absolutely confident that the boy didn't understand the liquid's properties or its texture.
As time passed, just as Hong Le was about to lose patience, Naruto snapped his fingers. "Now, take another look at your so-called secret recipe."
The pot of alkaline water had evaporated, and the sticky residue at the bottom of the pot now had many white, snowflake-like crystals surrounding it, giving it a stunningly beautiful appearance.
"What..."
Hong Le was dazed. He had learned about the use of alkaline stone from a certain master, but he had no idea of its further applications.
Unexpectedly, today, by accident, the full potential of the alkaline stone was revealed.
"So what? What does this have to do with the risks and flaws in my ramen?" Hong Le frowned.
The crystals that had formed were beautiful, and Naruto, full of confidence, smiled coldly as he heard Hong Le still refuse to admit it.
"You can try pinching some of it and tasting it. Afterward, you'll know I'm saving you."
Hong Le, confident in his mysterious alkaline stone, wanted to prove that there were no risks to his ramen, and scoffed. He carefully pinched some of the snowflake-like crystals and put them in his mouth.
The moment the concentrated substance hit his tongue, it was scorching hot, with a slightly stimulating taste that made his taste buds tingle. He understood that it was simply a matter of the amount being too concentrated.
With pride, he chewed and arrogantly stared at Naruto, as if to say: "You little brat, you don't know anything."
But the moment Hong Le swallowed the concentrated alkaline, his face turned pale. He suddenly clutched his throat, his eyes widening in disbelief, as he let out a hoarse, strangled sound.
[ Ding, you received 100 points of shock value from Konoha villagers! ]
Seeing this, Naruto didn't want things to escalate further. After all, his goal was to help Aunt Yile preserve the title of Konoha's first ramen enhancer for the sake of money.
"Drink some of this."
Naruto had already prepared a basin of cold water. When he saw the pain and fear on Hong Le's face, he hurriedly offered it.
The scorching, burning sensation in Hong Le's mouth, tongue, and throat felt like they were being corroded. The reaction was unmistakably poisoning.
Without hesitation, Hong Le grabbed the basin and began drinking heavily.
Naruto smiled warmly. "Drink more, this will dissolve in water. You don't want to die from poisoning, do you?"
Upon hearing Naruto's words, Hong Le dared not hesitate further.
He tilted the basin and drank heavily, his stomach visibly expanding with each gulp.
By the time Hong Le finished drinking the entire basin of cold water, he collapsed exhaustedly onto the ground.
"My... my mouth... my sense of taste..."
The burning sensation in his mouth faded, but his gums, tongue, and throat still felt as if they were being torn apart. For a short while, Hong Le couldn't feel his sense of taste.
Taste was everything for a chef; without it, he might as well be dead.
"Ah... I can't feel my taste anymore."
The burly man, in his thirties or forties, began crying uncontrollably, his nose running as he wept.
Naruto, seeing how obsessed Hong Le was with cooking, nodded slightly.
"Don't worry, it's just a temporary loss of taste due to the corrosive effect on your mouth. You'll be fine in less than three minutes."
Upon hearing this, Hong Le, who had narrowly escaped death, looked at the seven-year-old boy in front of him with awe and gratitude, then collapsed to his knees, his head bowing deeply to the ground.
"Poison... As a chef, I've served food made with poison... I'm unworthy to be a chef..."
Although his sense of taste would eventually return, Hong Le knew that if this matter were to get out through Naruto, he would no longer have a place in Konoha. He would live the rest of his life with guilt, hiding in shame.
Seeing this, Naruto flashed a sunny smile, one that was mischievous, yet reassuring.
"Don't worry, it's not a big deal."
