Chapter 43: Dreyfus Defeat
"Immediately they went through the portal, they ended up in front of the organization."
"We need a plan before going in, but first, Kris, I need to know the abilities in your arsenal right now and their opposites," Tahir said.
"I've got invisibility and strength. The opposite of invisibility is visibility, so I can make anyone with a similar ability visible. Same goes for strength; I can make anyone with a similar ability lose it temporarily once I activate the inverse," Kris explained.
"Cool. In short, the opposite of invisibility is actually useless in this case since the ability is rare. How does the invisibility work, though?"
"You're correct. I'm sure no one here has the invisibility ability. To activate it, I need to hold my breath. Due to my family's training, I've learned how to use every ability recorded. Because of that training, I can hold my breath for up to twenty minutes. And the good part is, I can transfer the invisibility to anything I touch," Kris said.
"Great! In that case, you and Jude will go to get Cassy. I put a tracker on her, so my drone will lead you there. On my signal, you both storm in," Tahir instructed.
"Roger that," Kris answered.
Tahir turned towards Esha and Zahra. "Both of you will come with me. We'll initiate an attack until they get Cassy."
"Also, none of you should underestimate them. Kill any warrior if needed, but under no condition should you harm an unarmed person. Don't attack the civilians," Tahir ordered as they all ran toward the gate.
"Intruders!" one of the soldiers shouted as they started attacking. That was the signal for Kris and Jude to move.
Activating his invisibility, Kris vanished immediately as Tahir's drone displayed the coordinates.
Fueled by anger over losing Silver, Tahir cut down every soldier in his path without mercy. A gruesome massacre ensued.
"Hey, kid, you need to chill. You're scaring the hell out of your friends," Shaw said.
"It's alright, we're here with you," Esha said as she placed her hand on Tahir's shoulder, a cooling sensation following.
Tahir nodded at Esha and continued his advance. The first wave of soldiers was killed, and then the second wave started—this time with ability users.
"This is getting hard. I can't hold back anymore; I'm going to have to take them seriously. You should, too," Zahra said, looking at Esha.
Activating her ice palace, Zahra froze every attack within her range. Ice gradually spread, trapping each warrior's legs and piercing them with ice daggers to render them useless.
Esha used the skills she'd developed to defeat her stalker, compressing the attackers in a confined area. One ability user tried using fire, which backfired as all the fresh air in the enclosure turned toxic, causing them to pass out.
Tahir sensed a familiar presence—the one who had taken Silver from him. His eyes turned entirely red as he prepared for an attack. 'This time, I'm ready for you,' he thought.
[New Quest: Defeat your opponent]
[Reward: Instant level up]
For the first time since arriving, Tahir drew three of his swords, a sign that he deemed this opponent a true threat.
In another part of the building, Kris and Jude, still invisible, had only used up ten minutes when the drone stopped in front of Cassy's cell.
Two guards stood watch. Kris approached one, activating his strength ability and its inverse.
Suddenly, both guards felt weak as Kris and Jude simultaneously struck, knocking them out.
Breaking into the cell, they found Cassy hanging from chains. Hearing the movement, Cassy raised her head.
"What are you guys doing here?" she asked, barely audible.
"What have those monsters done to you?" Kris asked, rushing over to unbind her cuffs.
"Why didn't you use your ability to break out?" Jude asked, his gaze fixed on Cassy.
"Because somehow, these ancient cuffs block out any ability usage. By the way, you still haven't answered me. What are you doing here?" Cassy asked again.
"Our captain—Tahir—ordered us to save you," Jude answered.
"And why would he do that?" Cassy asked.
"Because you're one of us. 'I'll protect you, and you will protect me.' That's what Tahir said when you agreed to join us, right?" Kris said as he lifted Cassy onto his back.
"Let's head back," Jude said.
Everyone was silent on the way back, until they heard the sounds of clashing swords.
Tahir and his opponent were locked in battle, the entire stage charged with bloodlust. 'He really hates me this much?' his opponent thought, barely dodging a slash aimed at his head.
"Take me seriously! Stop holding back!" Tahir yelled in anger.
"Very well, as you wish," his opponent replied, shifting from sloppy moves to rapid, precise strikes, one of which slashed Tahir's arm.
"Yes! This is what I want!" Tahir said, increasing his speed little by little.
The clang of their blades echoed through the building as the fight stretched on. Tahir was attacking from every angle, and his opponent was struggling to evade.
Suddenly, Tahir felt it—the invisible slash that had defeated him years ago. 'That won't work this time,' he thought as he charged in again.
"I was just getting started," his opponent said calmly, filling the area with powerful winds. Esha quickly created a barrier with her ability, shielding everyone from the thick, suffocating air.
The wind was strong enough to peel at Tahir's skin, but he ignored the pain, pushing forward.
Realizing he had no choice, Tahir activated Qi Overload, feeling an immense surge of adrenaline and energy.
Bending his knees, he took his stance. "Three Swords Style: Death Cold Embrace!" He unleashed a massive, almost unstoppable slash toward his opponent, who tried to control the wind to slow the attack.
Death Cold Embrace was one of Tahir's sword techniques, creating a near-unblockable slash immune to certain abilities.
The attack struck his opponent in a cross formation, slamming him into the wall.
Tahir moved toward his opponent as the system prompt appeared.
[Opponent defeated successfully!]
That's when Tahir noticed his opponent was no longer in a condition to fight.
"You've really gotten much stronger, haven't you? I want to tell you something. I don't have much time left, and it concerns Silver. My name is Dreyfus," his opponent said.
At the mention of Silver, Tahir sheathed his swords and walked toward the bleeding Dreyfus.
