Chapter 113: Chapter 113: Old Gold Mountain's Southern Pet Market
At the break of dawn, as the sky was still a shade of grey, Zeng Shen awoke. He glanced at the clock on the display screen beside him, which read 5:30 AM.
He opened his attribute panel to check his progress over the past five hours.
[Survival Points: 118,500]
"As expected of a big city, earning over 70,000 survival points in just five hours—satisfying," Zeng Shen thought with satisfaction.
He decided not to use these 110,000-plus survival points for drawing cards just yet. Instead, he planned to wait until he signed a purchase agreement here in the country before using an "Otherworld Invasion Card" to visit the divine realms of otherworldly deities and engage with their followers.
Closing the attribute panel, Zeng Shen got up, washed, and headed to the passenger seat.
Lin Keke, who had been diligently driving, turned her head as Zeng Shen approached and said obediently, "Master, you're awake."
"Yes," Zeng Shen replied, pulling a bucket of KFC fried chicken and two cups of iced cola from his backpack and placing them beside her. "You've been driving for a few hours. Hungry? Let's have some breakfast."
"It's only been five hours, Master," Lin Keke said, taking a piece of fried chicken and handing it to Zeng Shen. "You should have some too."
Zeng Shen accepted the chicken, eating as he instructed, "Drive towards the east gate of the city."
"Understood, Master."
"How many streets in Old Gold Mountain have we not driven through yet?" Zeng Shen asked.
"Thirty-seven percent, Master. Twenty percent of those are in the north, but the roads there were blocked last night. I couldn't go through, so I didn't," Lin Keke explained, turning the car towards the east.
Zeng Shen chuckled upon hearing that the roads in the north were still blocked. "If they knew I spent all of yesterday in the east, they'd probably be furious."
Lin Keke laughed, "I'm sure they would be."
After finishing the bucket of fried chicken, Zeng Shen recalled her into the replica card. He then drove to a secluded area without cameras, stored the vehicle in his backpack space, and removed his disguise mask.
He made his way to a nearby road with cameras.
"Useless, useless, you're all useless," came the furious voice of Admiral Bayard from a secret military base in Old Gold Mountain.
A massive screen in the main hall displayed live footage from every camera in the northern part of the city. Beneath the screen, seven or eight officers in dark blue police uniforms stood with their heads down, avoiding the gaze of the enraged Admiral Bayard.
"Admiral, please give us one more day. We will find him. We've requested reinforcements from the neighboring city, increasing our search efforts," one officer pleaded.
"Hmph," Bayard snorted. "I'll give you one more day. If you still can't find him..."
"Report, Admiral, we have new information," a messenger interrupted, rushing into the hall.
"Where?" Bayard asked immediately.
"The east side," the messenger replied, pulling a remote from his pocket and pressing a button to switch the screen.
The screen displayed footage from cameras near the east gate. Bayard and the other officers looked up to see a young man with hands in pockets walking down the street.
Suddenly, the young man turned, waved at the camera as if greeting it, stood there for ten seconds, then walked into a side alley out of view.
Seeing Zeng Shen appear in the east after spending 24 hours searching the north, Bayard felt a surge of anger at being fooled.
"Seal off the entire eastern area. Don't let a single fly out," Bayard ordered.
"Bayard, long time no see. Your temper is as explosive as ever. Aren't you afraid that sealing off the city will cause public discontent or external panic?" a crisp voice sounded from the doorway.
The officers turned to see three young female officers at the entrance.
Leading them was a woman in a white military uniform, with a striking figure and a touch of androgynous beauty, who gave them a cool smile.
"Tioya," Bayard addressed the woman, representing another influential faction in the country capable of standing against the Skull Society.
Suppressing his anger, he asked, "Do you have a way to help me find him?"
"Tell me why he's so important, and I'll help you catch him," Tioya said, stepping inside and locking eyes with Bayard.
Bayard turned away, "That's classified information beyond your access. Just have your subordinates cooperate with us."
Tioya's eyes narrowed coldly, "In that case, my troops won't participate in actions that cause public discontent. Good luck catching him."
With that, she turned and left.
After she departed, Bayard grabbed the remote from the messenger and smashed it to the ground, turning to the officers, "Idiots, who asked this woman for reinforcements from the neighboring city? Get out and face punishment."
...
In the east, after showing his face to the cameras, Zeng Shen ducked into an alley. Re-emerging, he had changed to a pale complexion with a square face and swapped his clothes for denim.
He walked to a nearby bus stop and boarded a bus heading to the pet market on the southern outskirts.
About ten minutes later, just as the bus was leaving the eastern area, it was stopped.
Several female soldiers in white uniforms, with striking figures, boarded the bus. They scanned the passengers, taking notes and asking for names, addresses, and phone numbers.
When it was Zeng Shen's turn, he gave random information. The soldier paused, glanced at him, then moved on, allowing the bus to continue.
After traveling for over half an hour, the bus stopped at the pet market in the southern outskirts.
Zeng Shen quickly alighted. As he did, an urgent warning sounded in his ear.
[Warning, the Old Gold Mountain pet market is infested with exotic beasts. A few deities, accompanied by their kin, are hunting here. Given the host's current strength, discovery could lead to enslavement and exploitation. Please vacate the area promptly.]
"Deities with their kin here?" Zeng Shen pondered. "Could it be that these kin are still just animals?"
The prompt gave Zeng Shen insight: some pets here must have become intelligent species after the catastrophe, later claimed as kin by the pet shop owners.
With this conclusion, Zeng Shen's eyes narrowed. Leaving these intelligent species in the country would only strengthen its deities, and if history repeated itself, they might one day mount an invasion to plunder resources.
To prevent history from repeating, Zeng Shen decided to weaken the country's strength by locating and taking the intelligent species and exotic beasts from the pet market.
He planned to visit the nearby insectarium afterward.
With a plan in mind, Zeng Shen didn't enter immediately. Instead, he moved to a secluded corner, summoned the No. 1 divine energy vehicle, and transformed it into a massive truck.
Parking it at the pet market entrance, he leisurely walked inside.
