Chapter 78: The Swarm
```
Karma in this life!
Gao Fei had been strutting around just now, but now he's frantically trying to escape, the contrast is just too stark.
A few minutes later, the python still caught up to Gao Fei. It sprang up high and bore down on Gao Fei, apparently intent on using its massive body to crush him to death.
Gao Fei hurriedly dodged to the side.
"Swoosh!"
The python missed Gao Fei's head by a whisker and crashed onto the ground. That was too dangerous. If Gao Fei had reacted even slightly slower, he would have been smashed into a meat patty.
"Boom!"
The ground where the python struck suddenly cracked open, and a tremendous suction force emanated from the fissure. Gao Fei barely resisted before being pulled into the crevice.
Powerful air currents buffeted Gao Fei's body non-stop; with every collision, he let out a pained cry. "Thud!" An air current hit Gao Fei's forehead, and then he... fell unconscious.
...
After an unknowable amount of time, Gao Fei slowly opened his eyes, "Where is this?" Using his hands to prop himself up, Gao Fei slowly got up from the ground. Even a slight movement brought waves of pain, but Gao Fei gritted his teeth and bore it.
Once he stood up, he began to survey his surroundings.
He was in an underground karst cave, vast in area, with all sorts of peculiar stones hanging from the ceiling. The ground was uneven with many pools of water, and darkness enveloped everything, almost to the point of not seeing his hand in front of his face. Of course, for Gao Fei, the darkness meant nothing because he had Clairvoyance.
Activating Heavenly Eye Clairvoyance, he could disregard the darkness and see anything he desired.
He hadn't expected a cave this large to be hidden beneath Shennongjia. If those archaeologists knew, they would go mad! Actually, it's quite funny when you think about it. Originally, this cavern was very concealed underground and hard to discover, but... the python, with its huge body, had fiercely struck the ground, ripping a crack in it and thus exposing the underground karst cave...
Right, what was that suction force?
And what about those strong air currents?
Where's the python? Did it follow him down?
Gao Fei had too many questions he couldn't figure out.
"Eh? Why is there a Stone Gate there?" Gao Fei thought he was seeing things. He blinked hard and then looked up again. No mistake, it was a Stone Gate; he wasn't hallucinating, "It really is a Stone Gate." Driven by curiosity, Gao Fei walked over, and the closer he got, the more shocked he felt at the sight of the Stone Gate.
The Stone Gate was embedded in a Stone Wall about six meters high and three meters wide, engraved with odd patterns... No, they were more like characters, a very ancient script, and Gao Fei didn't recognize any of them.
"Even nature couldn't have created a Stone Gate, right?"
"So, this Stone Gate must have been made by human hands."
"That brings us to the questions: who made the Stone Gate, and for what purpose?"
Based on the ancient script on it, the Stone Gate must have been around for a long time, possibly a relic from the Primordial Era.
"What could be behind the Stone Gate?" Gao Fei pondered to himself, "Should I open it?" There could be three scenarios if he opened the Stone Gate. The first, there might be a vast amount of treasure behind it. The second, the space behind it might be empty, a joke by ancient people— though this seemed highly unlikely. And the third, there could be danger lying in wait.
To find treasure by opening the Stone Gate would certainly be good, but what if he encountered danger?
Gao Fei was hesitant and unsure of what to do: "Fortune favors the bold! Let's take the risk!" After wavering for a while, the thought of opening the Stone Gate prevailed. Anyone else would probably have made the same choice.
Having made up his mind, Gao Fei didn't hesitate any longer. He placed his hands on the Stone Gate and pushed hard, but the Stone Gate didn't budge. He pushed harder! Still, nothing happened! In the end, Gao Fei exerted all his strength, yet that still wasn't enough to open the Stone Gate.
Given Gao Fei's current strength, he could exert thousands of kilograms of force with his hands and still couldn't budge the Stone Gate, which was quite unbelievable.
"Could there be some sort of mechanism controlling it?" Gao Fei thought of a possibility.
In the time that followed, Gao Fei searched for the mechanism to control the Stone Gate, touching here, pressing there. Half an hour later, he indeed found the mechanism—a protruding stone. Pressing this stone, the tightly sealed Stone Gate began to slowly open.
The moment the Stone Gate opened, Gao Fei quickly retreated to one side. He did this for two reasons: one was to guard against any traps inside the Stone Gate, and the other was to protect himself from any poisonous gases or moldy air. After all, the Stone Gate had not been opened in a long time, and the air inside would have become musty and degraded. Inhaling even a breath could be fatal.
```
The mechanism was ingeniously designed; after so many years, it surprisingly still functioned—the wisdom of the ancients should never be underestimated.
Standing aside and waiting for a while to ensure there were no traps inside the Stone Gate, Gao Fei finally stepped forward. Approaching the Stone Gate, he peered inside and was instantly dumbstruck…
"My God… What am I seeing…" It took a long time for Gao Fei to come back to his senses.
Glimmering gold, dazzling to the extreme.
Behind the Stone Gate was a resplendent golden palace.
Gao Fei found his brain struggling to keep up—first an Underground Karst Cave, followed by the Stone Gate, and now a palace… How many secrets were hidden in this place? Who built this palace here, and for what purpose?
After calming his emotions, Gao Fei stepped inside.
The first impression was "huge"; the palace was massive, at least tens of thousands of square meters. Next came the "high" ceiling, at least ten meters from the ground, followed by the feelings of "grandeur, beauty, solemnity, and awe."
After a few glances, Gao Fei noticed something off. On the surface, it seemed like the palace was made of gold, but in reality, it wasn't. The palace was built with stones, then coated with a layer of gold. Even so, this was quite remarkable, as gold was very scarce in ancient times.
In the center of the palace stood nine large pillars, with a table directly in front of them. Behind the table was a chair, upon which sat a person, or to be precise, a stone figure. Its hands rested on the table, its head raised, looking straight forward, with an incredibly lifelike expression on its face.
Gao Fei stepped forward to take a closer look at the stone figure. He had only taken a few steps when he heard a buzzing sound coming from above. Looking up, he saw a small hole open in the ceiling and a swarm of black insects flew out of it. The insects were tiny and ugly, but emitted a brutal aura.
"What are these things…" For safety, Gao Fei quickly retreated a few steps, and something strange happened. When he moved back a few meters, the black insects turned and flew back to the ceiling.
Gao Fei was startled.
What was going on? They had seemed so ferocious, ready to attack him just a moment ago, and now they were returning? Could it be that… Gao Fei thought of a possibility, but he wasn't quite sure. He decided to test it.
After taking a few deep breaths, Gao Fei stepped forward again, only to have the black insects on the ceiling immediately dive down toward him… He quickly retreated, and the swarm flew back up…
So it was true?
As long as he moved forward, the insects on the ceiling would attack him, but if he stepped back, they would return and leave him alone.
"Why are these insects trying to prevent me from moving forward?" Gao Fei pondered. "Are they guarding that stone person, or is there another reason?" The behavior of the black insects ignited Gao Fei's curiosity. After contemplating for a while, Gao Fei took a coin from his pocket, flicked it with his fingers, and it shot towards the stone figure like a strong gust of wind.
"Buzz…"
The black insects on the ceiling immediately swooped down, surrounding the coin. After a few crisp snaps, the coin disappeared. Gao Fei had seen clearly that it was bitten into pieces and eaten by the black insects.
"Buzzing…"
After consuming the coin, the swarm flew back to the ceiling, ignoring Gao Fei from start to finish.
"These insects have pretty good teeth, even able to chew up and eat a coin made of fine steel." Gao Fei touched his cleanly shaven chin. "I wonder if I could withstand an attack from these insects with my own strength?" Gao Fei had used his Heavenly Eye to inspect the black insect swarm to see their Combat Power, but to his surprise, he couldn't make it out.
There were only two possibilities for this—the black insects possessed a special body that prevented Gao Fei from seeing their Combat Power, or the swarm didn't have any Combat Power at all.
Gao Fei was more inclined to believe the first possibility.
These insects were no simple creatures.
Just as Gao Fei was considering whether to provoke the black insects further, a thunderous roar suddenly erupted from outside the palace.
"Swoosh!"
Gao Fei's face changed in an instant: "It's that giant python! It actually followed me here! Damn it, is this never going to end?!"
"Bang!"
A huge figure appeared at the entrance of the palace—it was the giant python, dozens of meters in length.
Seeing Gao Fei, the python's eyes turned blood-red. It let out a furious roar and then slithered into the palace, opening its gaping maw to bite at Gao Fei.
With the palace entrance blocked by the python, Gao Fei had no choice but to flee deeper into the palace. The relentless pursuit by the python ensued, and at this moment, the black insects on the roof descended, buzzing as they attacked both Gao Fei and the giant python. These insects were the Guardians of the palace—in fact, protectors of the stone figure.
They would launch an attack on anyone daring to approach the stone figure.
